The lyrics to this song make me think of Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian". Seems to me this song might be about Judge Holden in particular. In "Blood Meridian", as the Glanton Gang roams the country looking for victims, the Judge meticulously sketches and collects specimens of unfamiliar species. Toadvine, a fellow Glanton Gang member, asks why. The judge replies, in one of the most badass sentiments ever put to paper, “Whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent.” It's almost like the Judge could have said himself much of the lyrics to this song, especially the first verse: I know the rain like the clouds know the sky I speak to birds and tell them where to fly I sing the songs that you hear on the breeze I write the names of the rocks and the trees |

Ths is one of my favorite Cranes songs along with Tangled Up, (which for some reason isn't on the list...along with 30 others for that matter...). This song is most likely about a girl going from a humble small town to the "bright lights" of a big city to chase her dreams and to escape a relationship, "And is it all because of you? Everytime I look at you If I look back nevermind" Awesome song! And I know many a girl who left me for the bright lights... good luck, girl... |

| The last half of the song is by far my favorite. Of the three distinct parts that make of this last half the middle is my favorite. In the first part I feel like I'm going crazy with longing and pain - I have no capacity for reason or logic, only pain. Then, in the second part I regain my reason and ascend to a level of reason - and the music is clear and beautiful, like heroin, this is my favorite part. It cant' last, it peters out and I ascend again but this time into a confusing madness which consumes me till the end. | |
