This song reminds me of 'The Little Prince', when he's visiting all the planets. It's brilliant.

Underoath – There Could Be Nothing After This Lyrics 19 years ago
He says, "We're nothing but hollow vessels in search of what makes us alive," which rings very true to me. It seems like we're often taking whatever chance we can to figure out why we're here.

But Spencer is saying that he doesn't need to walk the white line because that isn't his "revolution" - It isn't the way he focuses the turning of his time. He recognizes what a mistake he would be making if he devoted himself to something fleeting.

I'm not sure, but I believe he's saying that there's somebody who's devoted to him, but he's certain they're taking a risk by doing so - "this is for you and your hopeless case". Every time he tries to fail, the person chooses to do so too just to stay at his side.

At the end, I believe's being judged for what he's done. But without sin, he's delicate and ashamed of who he was now that he's renounced the shell of his short-comings. He says that by looking at who he was he will never make the same mistakes again.

"In the eyes of my ghost, I will never look back again."

Underoath – Everyone Looks So Good From Here Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a powerful song. In my opinion, Johnny's right - this song is about a person who ends up finding himself in hell.

"I have put myself here
I am the culprit"

Really says a lot about the hopelessness of the situation. (s)he understands he put himself there and now he's certain he won't escape.

When he says the line, "Now I see things from the outside," I think he's trying to say that he recognizes all of the things he's done more clearly because he's gained a different perspective.

And since "home" is a theme throughout the CD, I believe the line, "And I will sit here with no place in mind," conveys that he's lost his home and has no where left to go, which is why he can't escape.

"This is so unfamiliar to me" gives me chills. In church, they said that when we see Jesus we'll recognize his face and he will be familiar to us. I believe that he's disappointed because he doesn't see any of what he had expected to gain.

"It's so easy when it's pulling me under," in some ways, we're all being pulled towards hell. And without his feet on the floor, he's lost the path he meant to follow.

Amazing song.

Underoath – To Whom It May Concern Lyrics 19 years ago
To Nothing But Skin, this album is filled with references towards coming to Christ, accepting who you are, and staying strong despite the issues at hand. If you read the liners notes, all of them speak of God and Jesus Christ, and a few of them write very personal messages.

For those fans of UnderOATH who say that they aren't who they were, that they're a screamo band without direction, read a song like this with an open mind. They've grown both musically and lyrically, and I for one, am impressed with their sense of vision. They actually had something to say on this album with every song, which not a lot of bands can claim, whether they're "screamo", "metal", or otherwise.

Anyway, I wanted to get that off my chest. It bothers me when you compare the UnderOATH of today to the UnderOATh that first started. They've stayed true to their message.

That's enough for me.

From First to Last – The Crows Are Coming For Us Lyrics 19 years ago
In my opinion, the starting of this song isn't directed towards a particular person: It's a general statement that's meant to address the audience, so that Sonny can tell a story that we'll be able to emotionally connect to.

The line, "you and me ought to hurry" seems to reflect the tension, because as we continue through the song, "the crows" are getting closer. At first they're simply coming for "them" until finally they're hungry, which to me, would suggest the opportunity was being presented for them to eat. And that's why I believe the line, "let them live" is a plea directing towards those the crows are hungry for, not the crows themselves. These are definitely people in serious danger and they're seemingly beyond hope, except for a possible plea.

"Always knew what you were" and "you walk on water, you sing a lovely tune" contrast each other. I believe the first line is his self-doubt over who the person really is, while on the other hand, walking on water is a miracle and "singing" a lovely tune is a way of speaking kind words. Perhaps he's confused as to who this person really is and he's ashamed to be in love with her because of "the crows" who could be anyone in general who criticizes their relationship.

If hidden in the "glitter", which suggests something fake and alluring, is the real person - then perhaps he wants to hurry with the girl he's with to reach that person inside of her and find out who she really is because they're both eaten for his decision to stay with her despite his shame.

mewithoutYou – Everything Was Beautiful, and Nothing Hurt Lyrics 19 years ago
For those of you who can't make out what he's whispering at the start, he says, "If only you call for me, if only you die for me, saw you burn for me, if only you call for me." Also, if you notice, the line, "Everything was beautiful, and nothing hurt" is repeated twice before the initial line that leads into the verse.

mewithoutYou is really inspiring.

Damien Rice – Cheers Darlin' Lyrics 20 years ago
This song was handled so well. Damien Rice has such a talent for creating the same emotions in you, as he had in the moment. With the atmosphere, as Phrogex said, you're able to feel like you're there, watching this entire scene unfold.

But yes, the meaning is very clear based on what WarpWhistlee said, but I think we can all relate this song to each of our own experiences.

I especially like the condescension in his voice when he calls her husband, "boy" but eventually calls her husband, "man" almost conceding defeat.

Prague really completes this song for me.

Damien Rice – I Remember Lyrics 20 years ago
This song could mean a lot of things. And I could definitely see why this would be two differentpeoples perspectives.

But something tells me these are both meant to be from a single perspective. I believe Damien wrote the first half of the song to illustrate the frustration of the second. I know the feeling all too well of discovering something amazing in someone only to find out that they don't feel the same, and they have no idea what they want. And I really believe this is from a single perspective based on the line, "Nothing is taking me down, except you, my love." which is the line that leads into the separate perspective. I believe Damien's saying that nothing could shatter his reality of their love, except her.

The second perspective really feels like Damien blames himself for what's happened. "God would forgive me, but I whip myself... Scorn, scorn." He can't forgive himself for ruining this special thing he's found, and so he's doing anything to forget, just hoping his sanity will save him from the pain of having fallen in love. "This is love, this is porn." really speaks magnitutdes about how Damien feels towards this girl. It's something divine, yet something vulgar.

I believe Damien must have been very afraid that he'd managed to scare her off.

Damien Rice – Prague Lyrics 20 years ago
After hearing Prague, this is by far my favorite Damien Rice song. It's so powerful and filled with intensity, but so sincerely sad.

As MRdDoAnRnKiOe, I'm certain this is the sequal to "Cheers Darlin'". It's the aftermath after he's discover she's already been devoted to somebody else, and his struggle to come to grips with the pain he feels. He's trying, but he knows that by waiting for her he's as good as the hole in her boot waiting to be fixed. And because of the feelings he has for her, if he can't find someone to win her affection or move on, he'll only remain pricked as he waits.

It's a really heartbreaking song.

Straylight Run – I Don't Want This Anymore Lyrics 20 years ago
Whatever, emo kid. I mean, you're welcome to your opinion and all, but I think this EP is a huge step in the right direction for SR.

I think the meaning to this song is very clear. It's about expressing your discontentment in the situation you're in, and realizing you need to start moving ahead otherwise you'll always stay stuck in the same place.

Taking Back Sunday – A Decade Under The Influence Lyrics 20 years ago
I can understand where people are coming from, believing this song is about John. But I don't believe that's the case. In my opinion, this song is about Michelle Nolan.

At the start, Adam claims, "we used to be this dying breed." In my opinion, Adam is talking about their relationship. Relationships aren't in the best state anymore, and Adam's saying that they were meant to be the kind of people who would make it.

As time wears on, and Michelle sits silent in the passenger seat, Adam continues to become more nervous. He's worried that for their decisions they won't stay together. He wants her to just admit, "well, say you'll have to go."

His mind his attempting to cope. If things can't work, then to hell with her and all of her friends. (A list that could include Jesse Lacey, Shaun Cooper, and John Nolan.) He feels the need to find something that could rid himself of these feelings for her. "Anyone will do tonight." Anything will do, so he's willing to close his eyes and settle.

But the last line shows how caught up in her Adam is: "I've got it bad."

Damien Rice – Woman Like a Man Lyrics 20 years ago
I can see where people are coming from, but I don't believe this song is about equality. It's true that a lot of men just want to have sex, and that's true for a lot of women now too, but that's not looked at as a positive thing. When someone just wants to "fuck" someone else, that isn't healthy. I believe he's showing regret about their relationship. He's saying that he only wants her for sex, too, and that's the reason why he hates this girl so much; She reminds him of her. Which can definitely be felt in the lines, "You reach me, you bleach me, you teach me of me. How familiar." She's getting to him, and he's surprised she has the upper hand when all she wants to do is be used like he's so used to doing himself. But she's also the kind of girl to get itchy feet; "keep her teeth, and run" instead of trying to work things out. That's why he's saying he'll get someone who's less work next time around. She wasn't worth all of the effort just for sex.

And I do agree that the vulgarity is necessary. By being vulgar himself, he's really shedding light about how much of a monster she was. "You teach me of me."

That's just how I read it.

John Mayer – Daughters Lyrics 20 years ago
By the way, thank you, Suntory. Caring for girls is a whole lot different than trying to save them. He didn't once mention putting on a cape and saving all of those "helpless" girls. He's only sending the message that they shouldn't be unnecessarily broken and hurt. What's wrong with that? Quit with the feminist, anti-men, bullshit.

John Mayer – Daughters Lyrics 20 years ago
When I hear this song I think of what many other people have mentioned, about the mistreatment of daughters by their fathers, but this also feels like a plea to me. He's saying that though these issues effect daughters directly, if fathers mistreat their daughters then boys stand a good chance of breaking; not being able to fix anything much like how John felt about the girl who he wrote this song about. It's a very honest song and I enjoy the emotion he puts into it.

Weezer – Butterfly Lyrics 20 years ago
Wow. Trifling you have too much emotion over a band that's a bunch of "faggets". Even though I respect your opinion, though I sincerely don't agree, I think you should learn to spell "faggot" if you're going to truly pull off the ignorant, forty-year-old loser, sort of thing.

But anyway -
Weez, I agree with you. But that always seemed to be half of the true story behind the story. Know what I mean?

Weezer – Butterfly Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't lean towards the idea of this song being about rape. River's doesn't seem like the type to force himself on a girl. Even though I do believe the line, "I did what my body told me to" would point towards sex, I believe he's more likely confessing towards cheating on her. "I'm a dog" would also hint towards that.

But this is a song with quite a few layers, and I believe just about everyone has been right in what they believed. Except for the whole girl locked in River's basement inside a cage scenario... *shakes head*

I miss Matthew Sharp.
