Jimmy Eat World – Sweetness Lyrics 19 years ago
ahahahaha. i've heard maybe 3 people say "this song sounds like it could be about drugs," and about 10 people say "OMG ITZ NOT DRUGZ Y DOES EVRY1 THINK SONGZ R ABOUT DRUGZ THATS 2 SHALLWO DRUGZ R BAD!!!11 i think this song is about a relationship"

why does everyone think everyone thinks all songs are about drugs? O.o

and who dares call drugs shallow? drugs are some fucking deep shit... just ask a few L-heads about their take on the meaning of life. or go on erowid.org and read some of the trip reports about acid. ohh damnn, like every single one of them is about a spiritual journey to discover the meaning of life.

the meaning of life? pshh... crying over a little high school love gone sour is WAY deeper than that.

that said... this song really isn't about drugs. "i won't play your hide and seek game" implies that there's another person involved - you really can't play "hide and seek" with drugs. they don't hide or seek very well. they just sorta sit there until you take them.

...this is a great song to take drugs to, though. :D

Propagandhi – Ska Sucks Lyrics 20 years ago
NOTICE: "Ska Sucks" is a ska song. Anyone who hasn't realized that must never listen to ska, as the upbeat guitar strokes are nearly instantly recognizable to anyone capable of recognizing ska.

And I agree, the "kings of ska" are definitely not some third-wave ska band. Granted, Mustard Plug is amazing, but they aren't anything original or innovative. Reel Big Fish and Mighty Mighty Bosstones are alright too I guess.

If you're into 3rd- and 4th-wave ska and ska-punk, check out Big-D and the Kids Table and Streetlight Manifesto. Two ska bands who will leave the rest of your ska CDs collecting dust in the back of the case. Also check out the album "Keasbey Nights" from Catch 22. (But not their other stuff, which is mediocre at best.)

Against Me! – Those Anarcho Punks Are Mysterious... Lyrics 20 years ago
the OHs and HAHs in the LP version just suck.

I think they put a slightly different spin on the song, probably one you aren't used to since I'm guessing you heard the accoustic version first. The accoustic version sounds more solemn, like a quiet anthem of unity. The "HOO"s and "HAH"s make the song sound almost funny, which destroys that solemnity somewhat. I can understand why you don't like them, but personally I've learned to appreciate the LP version as a good song in its own right. But then again, I heard the LP version first.

Against Me! – Baby, I'm an Anarchist! Lyrics 20 years ago
Whenever something is referred to as a "four-letter word", it's to compare the word to profanity, as many profane words are four letters long (fuck, shit, etc.). So by saying "to you solidarity is a four-letter word", they are saying "Solidarity is so foreign to you and/or against your beliefs that if someone were to use it in your presence, you would be as offended as if they had just used an obscenity."

"ps- If anyone other than me tries to break or burn my property that's my excuse to fucking kill them with my bare hands and mutilate their corpse with a garden claw."[/quote]

Two words: anger management.

At the Drive-In – Non-Zero Possibility Lyrics 20 years ago
You guys offer some interesting explanations, but I don't think any of them work quite perfectly...

"I was bitten on the entrance" makes me think it's not about abortion; I mean, who would be singing if Cedric were an aborted baby? I suppose he could be telling the story of an aborted baby, but I dunno... for some reason I think this song is deeper than that.

"Contusion is hungry, they still eat their young" doesn't really fit into the whole growing old idea. You could make some half-convincing arguments on why it still fits, but I still just don't think this line would've been included had the song been written about growing old.

I remember someone telling me once that this song is about poverty, and the perils associated with it (such as disease), possibly about in some future "proto-culture" when poverty is even more widespread than it is today. After looking over the lyrics here, it seems to all make sense.

Countless numbers of people die because of poverty every day. He's "tired of counting the bodies".

"let's just paint you a pretty face" reflects how our culture (or how the "proto-culture") tends to push the issue of poverty into the back of our minds, focusing more on the luxuries and conveniences of our own lives. When we see an example of people living on poverty, we say "Oh, that's horrible!" and then go back to finishing our dinners in our warm homes. A brief moment of empathy, and then we put back on our "pretty faces" and go back to our lives.

"contusion is hungry" refers to how their wounds go untreated because they can't afford a doctor maybe?

"they still eat their young"... you could take this literally... which is a gruesome thought...

"proto-culture null and void" could be referring to how empty our lives have become when we ignore our fellow man in need...

Then he goes on to describe the disease and death that comes with poverty? The lyrics taken as references to abortion could be about a pregnant woman whose baby dies either because the mother is malnourished or through childbirth because there's no doctor or hospital to help deliver the baby.

I could take the time to decipher the rest, but hopefully you see where I'm going with this.

Really cool song, I love how it could sound both happy and sad, and I love the backup vocals used... gives it a spooky, supernatural sound. ATDI is amazing, and I love their lyrics, which usually deal with important issues and often deal with broad concepts such as poverty.
