Lamb – Gorecki Lyrics 19 years ago
I first heard the start of this song in Moulin Rouge, and was instantly in love with it, but I only realised it was actually from another song when I heard it on TV on BBC Three's "Torchwood". I downloaded it immedietley and think it's brilliant!

Moulin Rouge – Gorecki Lyrics 19 years ago
This moment in Moulin Rouge has to be my favourite in the entire film. There is just something physical that happens to me when she sings it. The words, the music, her voice. I just get lost in it. And the song by Lamb is also good.

Snow Patrol – Grazed Knees Lyrics 20 years ago
Imo, they have just spent the night together. It's the morning after and they are remembering all the hundreds of reasons that they shouldn't have done it. Maybe they keep doing this, and maybe the "get caught" bit is because one of them, or both, is already in a relationship?
He wants to care for her - give her the blanket (common metaphor for protection), but he doesn't want to care too much because its the morning after - the passion is no longer there but has instead been replaced by guilt and a confused feeling of what happens next.
Just my initial reaction to the lyrics, could be totally wrong!

The Goo Goo Dolls – Here Is Gone Lyrics 20 years ago
Someone wrote a while ago about how it could be the sort of "make-out-buddy" relationship and i couldn't agree more. This guy and i had exactly that relationship and we just kept leaving then going back to each other and both kept changing our minds about what we wanted from the "relationship"...hence the lines :

"You and I got somethin' but it's all and then it's nothin' to me"

Also, it was my first/closest thing to a relationship, or boyfriend, and i wanted it to be perfect and stuff, which makes me relate to the lines:

"I wanted to be all you need"

Almost two years later, we've gone back to each other, pull buddies sure, he has a girlfriend. It probably doesn't mean anything, but so many lines of this song explain whats going on with it.

"And we wake up in the breakdown of the things we never thought we could be"

About a week ago, after deciding to just be friends
(because of his gf, i felt bad), he ended up persuading me again, and we spent the night together. When we woke up it was just like...oh no here we go, can't we just leave it? Knowing how much we are messing things up

So that's what it means for me!

It's a great song, nice to sing along to with feeling!

Elizabeth Fraser – This Love Lyrics 20 years ago
"And turn 'em in your fingers, love"
This line has some alternatives, such as
"It didn't mean a thing, love", listen to the song- you can't tell, it's vague, but it could bring a whole new meaning to the song.

Jimmy Eat World – Drugs Or Me Lyrics 20 years ago
This song hit home for me for several reasons. The way my brothers heroin addiction destroyed our relationship, and also the way that my friends seem to be going the same way. That is, so many of them have just turned into total pill heads and cant seem to do without them. They are so different now. I just want to scream at them "Stop. You can't see what is happening like we (the non pill heads) can". I care about them and I care about my brother but the frustration is so real.

I do however really like the interpretation of the semi schizophrenic drug user - talking to the drugs on "stay with me...". So fitting, and so tragically beautiful.

Jimmy Eat World – Hear You Me Lyrics 20 years ago
Please, can we not just accept that this song is beautiful - who cares about emos, rockers, whatever you call yourself. Let's just accept that this song can and has helped people at times of suffering and what is wrong with that?

Funeral for a Friend – Your Revolution Is A Joke Lyrics 20 years ago
Kinda makes me think "look at the world. we've formed all these sub posses of emo kids, goths, punks, chavs, whatever. we live in the same world but try to fight each other. we all try to be the most unique, the most cool, the most revolutionary group. what is the point? it's just stupid."

Massive Attack – Better Things Lyrics 20 years ago
It's about a girl/woman who is just fed up of all the pathetic excuses she is being fed with, she wants the real reason, no more crap. She understands that he wants to leave her and she is angry but understands that the relationship has come to an end. The patheticness of the excuses just makes everything hurt more. She just wants him to be straight with her.

At the end, she is looking forward to the outlook of the future.

Yup, it's about emotional isolation. About the perils of self discovery.

Portishead – It's A Fire Lyrics 20 years ago
This song means alot to me because when i discovered it it vocalised alot of the things i was feeling at the time.

'Let it be known for what we beleive in..."
Being a christian when all your friends aren't, they don't understand you etc...

"This life is a farce..."
As Niam said, she is pretending to be something she is not. I was putting on a front to everyone that I was ok, a mask of happiness, shutting all emotion away. Those feelings eventually suffocate you, and eat away at you leaving you feeling awful.

At the time also, I could see other close friends doing the same, and just wanted to say to them let it out, but you cant because they wouldn't listen... hence the "so breathe on little sister, like a fool". Little sister, patronising, yet endearing and loving. Sisterly feeling of protection.

Portishead – Roads Lyrics 20 years ago
It was really interesting. We actually used this song in a devised drama piece when I was at school. The piece compared the lives of two young girls both struggling with different situations in their lives. One young girl in the vietnamese war, being compelled to leave and fight. The other young girl trying to look after her younger sister after her father left the family desolate, both girls feel alone, helpless, abandoned, and had their individual wars to fight (literal and metaphorical).

Also can personally relate to this song, the feeling you get when you are just so down and don't think anyone else can possibly understand. That you also don't understand why you feel so bad "in this moment, how can it feel so wrong?". A desperate cry.

This is such a beautiful song, in every aspect, and will always mean alot to me.

Portishead – Wandering Star Lyrics 20 years ago
Whilst finding it really intersting to hear all these interpretations, this song meant something completely different to me. When I first got into portishead, as im sure alot people did, i was depressed. The worst throes of depression can be a completely physical sensation. You go into a zone where everything turns black, you stumble around unsure of what it is you are trying to do at that moment, your life has no purpose, you just want out. This "blackness of darkness forever" really struck a chord for me.

Doubled up inside
Take awhile to shed my grief
Always doubled up inside
Taunted, cruel.... ...

Those lyrics just for me describe the physical pain, and the emotional pain of just wanting someone to understand. When you feel like this all you want to do is cry out to someone, to reach out for help but you just don't know how...

Please could you stay awhile to share my grief
For its such a lovely day
To have to always feel this way
And the time that I will suffer less
Is when I never have to wake

With depression, you want to get out of it, you want to feel happy again, you want to show your friends how you are feeling but most of all you want out. Most of all, you want it to end. Most people who feel like this (generally bipolars or manic depressives like me, who can occassionaly see a more free way of life) are too afraid of the pain of death, and of the consequences of suicide, so the easiest way would be if they just never had to wake up or worry about anything ever again.

Those who have seen the needles eye, now tread
Like a husk, from which all that was, now has fled
And the masks, that the monsters wear
To feed, upon their prey

Many a depressive feels as if they have some enlightened way of looking at life, of understanding "deeper" things. They see most other people as empty shells, husks, who are fake (wearing masks) and have no inner beauty (monsters). They think everyone else is trying to attack them (monsters feeding on prey).

Another thing, is that I can now see that people who feel like this are so beautiful, and need to realise they are beautiful, like stars. That although all they can see is blackness, they can shine in the life of other people. This imagery is just so beautiful and perfectly fitting for me, I can't imagine it meaning anything else.

As for the religious aspect, perhaps there is something saying we are all sinners or something, linking us to demons? I'm not really sure, I hadn't thought about it that much before.

Either way, it is a beautiful song, and one of the many that helped me cope with the rougher times in life.
