The Smiths – Cemetry Gates Lyrics 16 years ago
to be reasonably brief, i think this song is about the death of language, or at least its demise. In another way though, Moz refers to Wilde positively to suggest that the greatest masters of wordplay will always live on.

Damien Rice – Volcano Lyrics 18 years ago
i ultimately think this song is a lot darker than just unrequited love. I don't think the girl is a bit younger than him, i think she's a lot younger. 'just another phase of finding what i really need' seems to indicate a certain boredom with the normality of sex, always looking for something better, more dangerous. 'what i am to you is not real' seems to say "now remember, if anyone asks, i don't exist". However, he mentions kissing her mouth and back being all he needs, and later reminding us that 'she's still too young to treat', so we've got this indication that he's fighting with his moral standings. The girl seems to be quite certain that she's in love, whilst damien's reasons are purely lustful, and this is where the unrequited love plays its part.

Bright Eyes – When the President Talks to God Lyrics 20 years ago
conor's just saying what he thinks yes? you can't knock him for that.
bob dylan was never renowned for having a good voice, in fact a lot of people were very sceptic about it, but fuck did he write some fantastic protest songs. conor isn't all that much different.
bright eyes is for people who want to think; you have to look further into the music and the words to understand the ideas and opinions of the writer than just a quick listen. i understand though that there's no hidden meaning in this song, so you either enjoy/appreciate it first listen or you don't. but if you hated it that much, at least give his other works a listen just to understand that he's not as blunt and aggressive as this song suggests. you may not like his voice any better, but you might enjoy him as a poet.
this song alone doesn't share with the listener every single view that conor has. only one in fact. he certainly has more than one opinion i assure you.

The White Stripes – Death Letter Lyrics 20 years ago
i'd say that this song is mostly about not understanding until it's too late, backed up by the line "I didn't know I loved her
Until they began to let her down". This could even be recounting a dream, the way the death, and the journey to see her and the funeral all pass by so fast, and then the final verse actually says that she used to be in the same bed as him, indicating that she may have left him or something previously, but he had a dream she'd died and woke up at the "break of day", probably in quite a state and realised that although they may have left each other, he now realises that he does still love her deep down but it's too late.

The White Stripes – My Doorbell Lyrics 20 years ago
i think the song is mostly about taking people for granted, the chorus is just like saying that after an argument with his girl, it's just a matter of time before she comes back home. The bridge says that she "don't seem to come around, not since i said you knocked it down" indicates that maybe this time she's had enough and won't be coming back. "Take back what you said little girl and while you're at it take yourself back too" shows how angry he is with his lady, and then the chorus' are picturing the stubborness of jack, not saying sorry but confident that she'll return like always. The "friends, they're all above me" line is based around the theme of ghosts that seems to dominate the album.

Black Sabbath – Iron Man Lyrics 20 years ago
i know that the meaning's been covered a million times, and this isn't what it's about, but it could similarly have been something based on frankenstein.. a more futuristic version of course.. the whole thing about "vengeance from the grave" and the obvious "is he live or dead? has he thoughts within his head?". i mean, it gets futuristic, and you can usually tell what a sabbath song is about just by a quick skim of the lyrics anyway, but ab out the good person turned bad by the harshness of mankind because of his defection really does share the same theme as that of Shelley's superb novel many years before.

Hundred Reasons – Answers Lyrics 20 years ago
this is my favorite song on the debut album. "if wings lay unbroken would they still unfold" asks us whether if we never had conflicts would we be able to learn. in the song, Colin sings about how mistakes make us better people, but how they hurt us in the process and how there are times when we never learn. the last line "i will ask of no one" could show that we all have to "make [our] own way[s]" the the world and not acquire knowledge by asking, but by learning from actions

The White Stripes – Passive Manipulation Lyrics 20 years ago
i'm so sure this has nothing to do with incest whatsoever. it's like telling women to remember that they're women in a male dominated world i think. the 'difference between a father and a lover' could be telling a woman that not all men are as sincere and generally frightening as her father. at first i thought it said 'a father and a mother' and i was like '..work it out?', but no it is clever. and i think meg's voice is gorgeous in this song :) a pretty voice to match a pretty face.

The Elms – Lifeboat Lyrics 20 years ago
this song is so awesomely pretty and powerful.. i'm not a christian, but i can relate to this easily, and i think everyone who's ever felt love can. the first two lines of the chorus are the best, the reference to eternal wisdom, like God is sharing a subtle secret with us all constantly, i like that idea, like really we're just guided by all these little subtleties that God has put on earth to guide us. 'when i can't swim you are a lifeboat' is obviously more about drowning under everyday stress and personal problems than swimming, which just really adds to my subtlety of the song; it's easy to point out what it all really means, but you can't take it literally. i like the way it's called Lifeboat, not Saviour or something because it prepares you for something demanding a little thought. the song is ultimately a pop punk hymn, and it's lovely. ^_^

Joanna Newsom – This Side of the Blue Lyrics 20 years ago
this song is the most beautiful thing on 'the milk-eyed mender' i think. her voice is so subtle and the music is the most wonderful and soothing folk i have ever heard. i think that 'this side of the blue' may be a reference to earth, the other side of the sky to heaven, with the continuous restrictions that we suffer on earth captured in the repetition of 'all you can do on this side of the blue' and the way she talks of gabriel navigating deftly as if he knows exactly where he's going, showing the difference between earth and heaven throughout the song really, how even the loveliest woman is merely 'the hardest heart beating this side of the blue', just a determined life. who knows.

Joanna Newsom – Peach, Plum, Pear Lyrics 20 years ago
i think i see the memories cutting through.. from the 'store' in the first line, to the description of a marketplace with 'peach, plum, pear'? i mean, it seems as though she's talking about love at first site and what it does to her, with all the references to horses bringing to mind the quote 'wild horses couldn't tear me away'. it's a rather grown up song to be sung by such a beautiful, childlike voice, but then i think that Joanna is generally a very ironic person, or so she seems to convey in her music
