Death Cab for Cutie – The New Year Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is great! I’d like to comment on four passages.

So, this is the new year? And I don't feel any different.
This seems to nod to that feeling of anticipation at the New Year, or a birthday, when the excitement fades to a realization that you don't feel a year older, and that you haven't exactly found the 'new world' you'd expected. It seems to express some melancholy from the lack of change and newness he's found on the other side of midnight.

So everybody... ... for just this once.
I find this interesting because I sometimes host New Year's parties where we dress up. It seems like a time for celebration, and the champaign custom really supports the idea of high-class for a night. It's also interesting to mention, however, that the end of this phrase suggests that nobody at Gibbard's party actually is wealthy. This adds to the feeling, mentioned by other posters, that there is a feeling of not belonging.

I have no resolutions. It's self-assigned penance for problems with easy solutions.
Gibbard suggests that resolutions are self-punishment for the past years wrongs, but mostly the ones that can be simply solved: loosing weight, quitting smoking, etc. The humor is, though, that although these solutions are straight-forward, they still seem impossible for us to achieve. Perhaps this is where the punishment lies, in the probable failure to succeed. This also shows us that Gibbard is not a man to dwell on past failures.

I wish the world... ...hold us back.
It feels like this section is unrelated to the rest of the song. Ben seems to be singing about his desire to be closer to someone that is far away. As DexMTrip mentioned, the last line could suggest getting to that person, or it might relate to mutual ambitions.

This song is really cool, as are a great number of DCfC songs. There's an interesting conflict, I think, between the apparent frustration of the beginning, and the youthful optimism at the end (WombatCombat, Vince). I really get the feeling that Gibbard felt frustrated that his life wasn’t making the progress that he would like it to, but is still looking ahead toward the accomplishments he will make in the future. It shows us that, no matter how reflecting on our shortcomings may make us feel, we should still keep our eyes on the horizon, and always work to bring it closer.

Lyle Lovett – North Dakota Lyrics 20 years ago
I think the chorus of this song talks about cowboys with lovers in Mexico, and possibly Canada. The song as a whole, though, is pretty clearly a love song, although the specific meaning is, to me, unclear. Any help?

Lyle Lovett – If I Had A Boat Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this song is totally great. It gives me this image of a man standing on the bow of a ship at sunset, looking out towards the vast sea; a true traveler. Also, the pony is a cool metaphor in a lot of ways. I think the pony is like the silent comrade, always by your side, no matter what. You never need to tell the pony what to do, but you trust that he's always there to do it. It also helps the sense of silence. On the boat, Lyle may be lonely, but he his not alone.

Fountains of Wayne – Valley Winter Song Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this song is great. It kinda summarizes the winter of my senior year, when my GF was away at college. We were just looking fwd to the summer when all the crap would be done with.

I love that line "Your daddy told you, when you were a girl, the kind of things that come to those who wait." I think it's a great lyrical change on the old saying, it forces the listener to do a little bit of work to understand it. I think these guys write great music. Good stuff!
