Will everyone please stop relating Muse songs to drugs! I can't find the magazine to quote it directly, but Matt Bellamy has said in several interviews that, while he even encourages some people to use drugs around him, he does not use hard drugs as he feels that he is too hyped up already. He uses weed occasionally, but certainly not cocaine. |

So far I haven't really read anything that accurately describes what I feel this song to be about, but I'm unsure whether I can fully articulate my meaning. As I see it, this song is about self destruction and the succumbing to animal instincts and the trancendence that can be achieved through this. I have read many comments about this being an attack on God, I think this is an easy assumption to make, considering Reznor's track record (Terrible Lie, Heresy etc.), but I think it is incorrect. For me 'God' here represents a higher spiritual plane that can be achieved through this degradation. These themes are somewhat similar to those found in the film and book of Fight Club; "Self improvement is masturbation, maybe self destruction is the answer". |
