The idea that some people will be a part of you forever seems to be a theme with Bon Iver.
Just because a relationship is over, the time that you spent together doesn't become redundant - love makes every second worthy of a memory.
This song also sort of attempts to explore the ways that people deal with the breakdown of relationships, she's out getting drunk, dancing on bars, and trying to forget something that was worth remembering. He takes another place with him everywhere he goes, and that place is memory, that place is HER, and yet her way of dealing with their being apart has soured the memory of their relationship.

I always loved this song, and now, I truly know what it means for the first time.
My first love left me two years ago - taking everything that I had always taken for granted would be there forever. I was devastated for a really long time, and completely bewildered at why things had ended. He gave me no answers, and cut me out of his life completely.
Just last week, I finally felt like I was ready to speak to him again; we met up, he said he'd made a massive mistake letting me go, that he still had feelings for me, but that he couldn't guarantee that he wouldn't run away like he did before, and so the professions of love, the absolute chemistry that we both still felt after so long is still wasted. I decided that I couldn't be his friend; that if it hurt that much every time I saw him, then regardless of the adoration that I have for this man, the only answer was goodbye.

This song will forever remind me of my Mum.
After the breakup of my first relationship - heart in my mouth, lights did guide me home to her, and she tried so desperately to fix me.
Two years on, this song still makes me ache. Even though I am perfectly happy with my life right now, just a few chords of this song fills me up to the brim with everything that I felt that first week, the pain in my Mum's eyes as I shook with sobs, the way I resisted her comfort. It makes me shiver.

This to me is about those years following the break up of a relationship that really, and truly changed you - you knew the person inside out, and feel an immense hole in your chest whenever you think of them. I'm not entirely convinced with the genuineness of the line "I wish nothing but the best for you too", it seems to be sung with such unnerving bitterness and heartache, and that would link to turning up, uninvited to let them know that you still love them, and that for you, it really isn't over.
In my opinion, this song comes from a vulnerable place; right at that moment when you find out that your ex has moved on, and you haven't. You begin to question why they have moved on, and why you are unable to, and get the real and painful feeling that actually you still love them.
It's beautiful, unnerving and bitter. Like break ups are. |

I don't thonk that Connor is "trying to take the piss out of God..." as some people have said. I think he is ripping into Bush's interpretations of God which is a valid point - how can a deeply religious man like the President justify some of the decisions he has made?
Connor is relating the President's warped interpretation of God's will to the religious undertones in his own life.

To me, this song is a detox! lol. I was in a relationship with someone and i felt completely trapped by his depression. When i finally worked up the courage to end things, he started self harming and the parts of me that he hadn't already suffocated were ripped to shreds. He put me through hell, but i still tried to help him because there was nothing else i could do. After listening to this song, and sobbing at a party, i told him that i couldn't take it anymore, that i couldn't help him anymore without losing a part of myself. I severed all ties with him on that day, and it still hurts, i still feel responsible for him, but I'm on my way to good again. |

this song is AMAZING. Mr Blunt is a lyrical genius. It gives me butterflies and chills. You can hear the emotion in his voice as he's singing, you can almost hear him crying. I would like to know who the person he is singing of is, and the story behind the song. I think he must have experienced this first-hand, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to write this as effectively. |
