| The Rolling Stones – Paint It Black Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I don't have time to read all 7 pages so if some one posted this already, I apologize. But I think this song is about depression, for what ever reason I don't know. The few posts that I read I heard people speculating about the "red door, painted black" In China, red doors are for good luck. By painting it black you take the good luck away. Some times you are in a big enough funk that you just want to stay depressed. | |

wow, people take things way too seriously. for all of you who believe that kurt actually killed himself, i ask you to look at th facts as they are presented. it was litterelly impossoble for him to have killed himself. he was murdered (possibly by his "loving wife" whore courtney love. ) given th amount of junk in his system he could not have possibly picked up a shot gun. if he was wanting to kill himself by overdose, then who picked up th gun and why? he did rewrite his will, but died before he could sign it, thereby leaving it unofficial. despite th obvious (and illegal) conflict of interest, th coronor in th case was friends with courtney love it has been revealed that courtney love offered eldon hoke $50,000 to kill kurt th only parts in th so called "suicide note" to even mention suicide were written in DIFFERENT HAND WRITING no fingerprints were found on th shotgun, why would a guy trying to off himself bother removing fingerprints or wear gloves? some one somewhere is getting away with murder, and that is unforgivable. kurt, may you rest in peace |

to venu rm1286: technically every so called "holy war" that has ever been fought has been fought for greed of money and greed for power. God has had nothing to do with it. |

I have to agree with all of you who say that this song is about forgiveness. Personally, I have always related to it. If i didn't know better I would think they were writing about me LOL. Its about someone who has realized that he has hurt those he loves and although he tries to change and be a better person he just can't. I don't think its about suicide, or homelessness necesarily, but about someone who wants to change who he is. and he wants others to forgive him for everything he's done to hurt them even if it was unintentional. "so you bring this poor dog in from the rain, thought he just wants back out again" about people giving him a second chance but he still can't help but go back to his previous actions. i really love the songs on load and reload (i know, its unpopular to admit that) because although they dont have the energy of the early albums they have such raw emotional power that it hits a chord deep inside. by the way i have the guitar book for this album and they have the lyrics as: -"the net below has rot away" instead of right away -"but nowhere safe from the storm" rather than no one's -"so as I write to you, of what is done and to do" istead of dawning to do -"my eyes seek reality, my fingers feel for faith" not flame -"so low the sky is all I see, all I want from you is forgive me" rather than forget me At any rate, thats what the lyrics in the book say, i think it makes sense if you listen to the song. |

uhh... since I once heard James Hetfield say that this song is about addiction, that is what I'm going to go with here. If anyone here has had the unfortunate experience of dealing with addiction you could see where it would make sense. Those of you who interpret the song as being about evil aren't far off as being addicted to drugs and/or alcohol is a bitch and sometimes leads people to do things they wouldn't ordinarily do. the lines "I'm your life, I'm the one who takes you there....I'm the one who cares....do my dirty work scape goat......pay the price, pay for nothings fair." really work for the addiction scenario. The sad fact is that you can turn your back on your friends and family but you can't turn your back on a drug. And once you are controlled by a substance, and i mean really controlled by one it really changes your persona. |

wow, duke you have nothing better to do than to turn a song meanings web site into an ugly needless war, and then you follow it for days at a time insulting strangers because of their taste in music. then claim you dont care what they think when your insulting replies prove that obviously you do care. what turned you into such a hatefull and sad human being? poor upbringing? being a dick for th sake of being a dick is in very poor taste. by the way, i'm not normally a korn fan. though i do like a few of their more recent albums and the group seems to rock as human beings and not pull the typical asshole famous people stunts. this song is a beautifull song and (i think) helped pull th band into the mainstream...tho that may be a bad thing... :-0 |

Whoa, people. Calm down. This is a song meanings site not a forum to tear apart other members for having their own opinions. If you believe in Christ --great. If ya don't thats cool too. If ya believe in some other religion that is also cool. All Hoffa did was offer his interpretation on the song and give his opinion. Imagine that! That is exactly what this site is all about. For those of you who can't respect that others have an opinion of there own: A) That's very narrow minded of you, don't take offense every time some one disagrees. Develope a sense of humor. Anger just masks ones own insecurities. B) If you are going to disregard the afore mentioned advice (and it's your right to do so.) PLEASE, PLEASE get your facts straight. 1)In the middle ages (not the dark) the rulers, under the authority of the Pope, decided to persecute members of the kingdom. The kings and Popes were acting purely out of political self interest. God had nothing to do with it. He was a flimsy scapegoat to gain the support of the masses. The masses accepted that only because they did not want to be murdered themselves. So -called "holy wars" are the same, As is W. Bush. They use religion as an excuse to do what they want. It has nothing to do with God, Allah, Buddha, Ra, Vishnu, Confucius, Anat, Bhrama, Shiva, or any other deity that one cares to bring along 2)The idea of the Pope as Antichrist is an old one that has been circulated since the protestant revolution. 3) Basic Christian theology doesn't force one to believe in Adam and Eve to get to heaven 4) There is no sufficient proof that Kurt commited suicide, if you look at the evidence it points to murder (likely by his wife, but i won't say any more). This has nothing to do with religion, but someone brought it up. ~Ihope that cleared up at least some of the confusion. To use past wars and persecution as a blanket statement to hide behind your own fears of religion or evolution as humans is both ignorant and close -minded. Look at the facts before you criticise anything, to do otherwise shows your ignorance. For the song; I feel that it is about a person who feels unworthy of God's grace. He mistakenly feels that he has to earn God's love and therefore comes up short. It is a beautifully done song and cover. Nirvana rules. p.s. to the person who doesn't understand why Christians listen to Nirvana: Nirvana rocks, for starters. Also, religion doesn't dictate what you can and can't listen to. religion is just a belief in and reverence for a supernatural power. |

I always thought that the "forgive me father" line was a take off on what the Catholics have to say during confession. Regardless, what the song always said to me was that he is feeling guilty for something. (not important why) And that he wants atonement for his sins. He recognizes that all sin "one and the same are we" as it is basic human nature to do so, but this does not absolve the guilt that is eating away at him. A very deep song, like most on the album. Load as a whole does not get the respect it deserves. |

This song really speaks to the passifist in me. There is no excuse for any war and there have never been any good or "holy" wars. (with the possible exceptions of wwII -liberating the Jews- and the star wars trilogies --both of them) Lyrics like "soldiar boy, made pf clay now an empty shell. 21 only son but he served us well" speak of the callousness of army officials and commanders- in- chief whose only motivation are greed and power. Metallica has always been a band of substance and this song is just one example. No one should hide under patriotism as an excuse to take away human life. Patriotism breeds nationalism which is a fancy word for racism. This song cuts through the treacle and shows just what it is really like out there on the battle field. Props to Metallica for putting this out there and getting to the heart of the matter |

WOW! RawCore, buddy, what put all that hatred into your heart?you couldn't have always been this bitter.tell me, is it just christianity that you hate or all religion in general? You are aware aren't you (what with your superior intellegence and all) that atheism is actually a form of psychological repression. I pity you. it can't be easy to live with such hatred. Now on to the song- I feel that this is a great song (hell they all are. Metalllica rox!!) i have to agreee that this song is about televangelsits whose only god is money and whose only "jesus" is themselves. That they lead ppl astray in their quest for fame, power and greed is unforgivable. Ultimately however, the joke will be on them. No God -from anybodies religion- will condone their evil acts. |
