What's wrong with singing "Maharishi, what have you done? You've made a fool of everyone" ??? It'd be great... ;) |

I'm also suprised no one commented on this before viperqt196...but no one needs to comment on it now cus viper got it right. Like a few other Dylan songs, this one seems to be pretty straight forward with a clear meaning. It's just a beautiful expression of exactly what talentless people would say if they could. He's so good cus his words and music are what everyone feels and has felt..and his songs make you feel those things again. He just knows exactly how to describe certain wonderful experiences, emotions, etc. |

I think this song is pretty powerful and meaningful. I think it shows how there is so much horror in the world, so many bad things going on. Maybe the point is make us realize what we have and maybe try to prevent such horrible things from happening anymore. A lot of the things mentioned sound like the results of a war..what happens to people after or during a war. |

I think the line, "Goodbye's to good a word" means that saying Goodbye for real...for the last time, would be just TOO good to be true. He's acting like he really doesn't want to see the girl again ever. He's trying to act like he doesn't care and he's leaving for good. There's a lot you could say about this song, it always makes me think about a lot of things. Maybe this song is someone saying what he wishes he could say to his lover, but he can't say it to her because it's one of those relationships where one person is madly in love and can't leave even though they know its bad for them to stay. Perhaps, when he's not with her, he thinks these things and gets angry and ready to leave her, but when he sees her again...he just can't leave her, he's stuck. |

For some reason I was suprised by the number of comments posted for this song. It is one of my favorite Dylan songs. His lyrics are always great. Anyways, when I listen to this song, I always think of a man who is very bitter about a lost love. He claims that she can do nothing to get him back and tries to seem indifferent and yet...because he wrote the song, he obviously really wants her back and would take her back if she gave him the chance. He says, 'it ain't no use callin' out my name' and 'it ain't no use in turning on your light' but then he says, 'i wish there was something you would do or say to try and make me change my mind and stay'...which I think shows how though he is very bitter and sarcastic (don't think twice, it's alright...but it's not), he really loved the girl and hasn't really let go yet. He's mad she didn't even seem to care or notice what she's done to him.
"I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind
You coulda done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right" My favorite lines... :) I love the bitter sarcasm...Maybe he wouldn't take her back after all... |
