K's Choice – Winners Lyrics 20 years ago
I love the darkness of the chord under "we will be winners", it' almost threatening!

Travis – Writing to Reach You Lyrics 20 years ago
Man, it's so hard to make a song like this, it's gentle, but not wishy-washy, it's still driving and earnest.

Such rich timbres in this song, they mesh so well with the lyrics.

This song makes me think of some beautiful old photo full of bends and tears. Great song.

David Mead – Nashville Lyrics 20 years ago
David Mead has no comments on his songs... it's strangely comforting, like an oasis of nature in the middle of urban sprawl. Which I suppose makes me a candy wrapper in the wetlands.

Anyway, this song is so brave, touching, and rare, I've listened to it on repeat dozens of times. Sometimes I forget that the song doesn't end with a reprise of the intro...

Perfect example of how the specific is actually the universal...

Neil Finn – Try Whistling This Lyrics 20 years ago
I think that there are 2 POV's here, a smarmy abuser, and the abusee. It's interesting to set such dark, ambiguous lyrics to such a spare, beautiful melody.

I strain to think of a performance better than this one.

What a delicate, beautiful, unapologetic song.

Sarah Harmer – Lodestar Lyrics 20 years ago
I love how the song just crescendos near the end as if the dizzying perfection of the moment is almost maddening, then dies on the last line as if she's falling exausted from sensual indulgence into her lover's arms.

The Innocence Mission – Happy, The End Lyrics 20 years ago
Such a perfect song. It feels like childhood, Christmas, love.

Jon Brion – Hook, Line and Sinker Lyrics 20 years ago
One of the few cases I know of where a guitar tone perfectly parallels the lyrical mood of the song it's in...

Shawn Colvin – If I Were Brave Lyrics 20 years ago
Wow, can't believe someone hasn't commented on this song...the way she sighs before the "so now I ride the ought one thirty five" line is one of the most unaffected, real moments ever picked up by a mic, to say nothing of the resonant, rich lyrics and production.
