The Beatles – In My Life Lyrics 16 years ago
First of all, I'd like to say that I don't truly think anyone's really given this particular song a justified response, as to what the song is actually supposed to mean. Sure, some people give very surface-level statements about what it means, but nothing deep -- and it's a deep song, as Lennon said. Most of the comments involve the poster's life, and how the song has affected them, rather than what the song actually means. Hence, I'd like to actually put some attention in the song, where it belongs.

In its entirety, the song is basically written to someone beloved to the songwriter. The speaker is expressing their love for someone special. This is indicated by the line "In my life I love you more." Although, rather than simply saying, "I love you," the writer decides to compare their newfound love to everything they've known to love and cherish their entire life. This is indicated by the lines, "And these memories lose their meaning/ /When I think of love as something new." Hence, the writer is saying, "Compared to even the most cherished of all of my life's memories, I love you more."

Hence, the song isn't necessarily about reminiscing or nostalgia. Instead, it's more about expressing one's love for someone, by comparing them to the past. "You're greater than my most cherished and fond memories." Although, in doing so, the writer must express how great and cherished these memories actually are. Hence, there is a sense of nostalgia and reminiscing, in order to express the depth of this love and appreciation for the past. And so, by showing how deeply in love he/she is with their past, the writer is truly saying miles, by comparing their love to these feelings. They are, in essence, saying that they respect and appreciate their past indefinitely, but that even those memories cannot surpass the love he/she now feels for this new special person. And so, they express the immensity and seriousness of their love for that person.

Although, the average person will only really relate to the nostalgia and reminiscing, so that the song isn't really cherished as a love song. Instead, oddly, it's cherished as a looking-back song. A song of memory. A song of reflecting on the past. And it's odd how the chord structure of the music, and every selected note, seems to get across a sad, somber feeling, rather than some excitement and seriousness of an expression of love. Instead of a love song, it comes across more as a melancholy perspective of the past; a deep, sad look at all of the memories of one's life.

And personally, I think the beat is too Beatlesque. In other words, it's too poppy. Too upbeat. Too rock and roll. John Lennon's later music was very serious and deep -- expressing worlds of emotion, as he had matured as an independent songwriter/musician. I think it's sad that John Lennon didn't re-record this particular song in his later years. It was truly one of his all-time best songs, along with Imagine. And also, I feel the same way about Help. I think Help should have been re-recorded, along with Strawberry Fields Forever. While Strawberry is simply odd-sounding, and could've been orchestrated better, Help suffers from the same problems as In My Life: the beat is too poppy, too upbeat, too Beatlesque. The odd thing is, these aren't Beatle songs; their Lennon songs. One can sense Lennon's particular style all over these songs. The very lyrics are philosophically deep and moving -- full of meaning and emotion, whereas most Beatle songs are simply catchy, without the extra sense of meaning, for which Lennon was no doubt talented.

I think McCartney's Yesterday was a good example of how these Lennon songs should've been recorded. Solo piano, or solo guitar, without the rest of the band, and without the drums. Lennon's songs were simply too bare and special to involve the rest of the Beatles. He should have recorded In My Life, Help, and Strawberry Fields Forever in a very personal, solo manner. I think the songs are now left in a form which isn't truly genuine to Lennon. I feel they are songs suck in the past, in a form Lennon could have done away with. I feel Lennon's true mature song writing style would've naturally brought out the true depth and scope of these earlier songs. And now they're simply stuck in a two-dimensional Beatlesque box of pop garbage. But I still think they are decent, even if they aren't exactly entirely Lennonesque. Lennon's spirit still lies within the music -- one just has to overlook all of that Beatly nonsense to hear it!

Cheers.

John Lennon – Help Me to Help Myself Lyrics 19 years ago
I personally think SgtPepperGirl actually made a great observation: you really cannot interpret these lyrics and fail to recognize the sole fact that John Lennon was indeed a very spiritual and religious person; ; John Lennon was not against being religious or spirit; John Lennon was simply against specific fashions of expressing religious and spiritual feelings: as in organized groups such as the Catholic Church or Christian community.

If you go back and take a look at the lyrics to "Oh My Love," it becomes very apparent that Lennon indeed always remained spiritual and religious in his own personal ways in the majority of his entire life. Lennon reveals the notion that Yoko managed to "open" his "mind," and that he now sees the clouds, sky, trees, and the wind -- the everyday things which commonly go unnoticed by the irreligious and low-spirited persons (as I personally have experienced). Lennon also says that for the first time in his life his "mind can feel," which would, to me, mean he no longer perceived the world in concepts, but actually began to ascribe symbolic value to everything he saw via emotion. As far as I see it, no one can live life complete, in all of its entirety, given the many aspects of life which are possible to experience, either never once practicing in those faculities of life which come from emotional influence, or never once praciticing in those faculties which come from intellecual influence. Religion and science must become balanced; no one must so unemotional and cold as to always view everything in concepts and think logically all of the time; but then again, no one can also ever tend to always view the world in symbols and feelings, and never once attempt to grasp it all in a logical manner.

Lennon simply had the tendency to criticize the over-zealous ways of other humans, while never truly going so far as to also never criticize other humans who are devoid of those religious feelings. Lennon was a man who balanced between religion and science, intellect and feeling, and like Da Vinci, knew how important criticism is sometimes. A teacher must criticize a direct or indirect student, and in the same way, Lennon must have felt as though he was watching over everyone as a teacher, criticizing as a duty. And so he wrote his famous Imagine, his most famous song, one which expresses his concerns and criticism of the wrongs of other human beings.

Lennon was a genius at heart, and no one can deny it. This song only goes to show how Lennon held a person God, but didn't believe there was really "A God". He must of seen "God [as] a concept," as he himself coined it -- a concept which allows humans to "help themselves," again, as he put it. THis is a great song.

Mudvayne – (Per)version of a Truth Lyrics 19 years ago
This reminds me of a song I created about America.

"The world is only lies!" - Me.

The line above is of a song I created entitled, "Fuck America."

It's basically written from the same perspective from which Chad is writing here. Chad is most likely speaking to these "liars," and may also feel that they are all over, brainwashing children and corrupting their minds. Our teachers are liars (sometimes); our leaders are liars (naturally); our role-models are liars (unknowingly); our idols are liars (uncontrollably). The people we tend to look out to when we are young, impressionable, and vulnerable tend to feed us things we later come to learn are absolutely absurd and nonsensical. Just pure rubbish!

When I wrote my song about America, it was basically an attack on, or just an expression of my feelings toward, one aspect of this whole conglomerate world of liars that only harm us as individuals. America is full of liars, and is based on lies. The military of America is one of the most corrupt and deceitful of organizations. However, this can be applied to the Bush Administration, clergymen, and even some artists. Everyone lies, and it's that we must give ourselves truth that we see things this way.

Anyway, this is a great song which expresses these feelings of isolation and deceit.

Jim Croce – Time In A Bottle Lyrics 19 years ago
This particular song is written from a really odd perpspective. Rarely does an artist attain the natural talent requisite to create thoughts in poetic form which artistically express those universal feelings and thoughts we all hold and share together.

Everyone has once felt in their lives as though there was too much time in the interval between one specific time in the present and one in the future. This is anticipation of some other time desirable, which results in impatience.

But we've all also felt the exact opposite: there are times in our lives when we find that time desirable after having waited so long, and we then feel as though that time period is overabundantly minute. We long to stretch-out time and then pause it, or manage to make it last longer.

In short, we dread the wait of things we desire, and feel that time is too long; yet we also overly enjoy the time we spend when we find those things, and then feel that time is too short.

And Jim really expresses this psychological universality among all humans in this song. It expresses the desire to control time to longer enjoy our loves and passions, and it also expresses what it's like to appreciate those loves and passions.

As I said, it's rare that an artist will have the ability to tap into psychology and sociology and still manage to express that understanding in poetic form, then apply it to music. One of my favorites in this area is John Lennon. Jim Croce now also has my respect as an artist for having created such a deep work of art.

This song is of mere genius -- straight out of John Lennon's realm.

John Lennon – Crippled Inside Lyrics 19 years ago
John is definitely homing in on the fact that most people tend to hide many aspects of their lives and personalities behind false, pretentious appearances. On the surfance, you can call yourself this and that, and say you aren't' this and that, but when it really comes down to it, no one can hide those truly real feelings deep down that come from having been crippled, metaphorically, inside emotionally and mentally.

My favorite stanza in this song:

You can go to church and sing a hymn
You can judge me by the color of my skin
You can live a lie until you die
One thing you can't hide
Is when you're crippled inside

This is definitely a very powerful grouping of statements about humans. You can go to church and sing a hymm to try to make yourself "think" you're okay, or make others "think" you're okay. You can also pretentiously find reason for bias in the fact that someone is different--whether it be skin, thought, or nationality, etc., etc. You can also live a lie that you may or may not have created until the day you die, and think everything is dandy, but, again, you cannot hide those real emotional aspects of human existence.

John was a Genius; hence, my name.

Paula Cole – Nietzsche's Eyes Lyrics 20 years ago
It would seem that she is speaking of a previous love and the relationship between herself and that lover. He (or maybe even she) was her god who felt she was too self-obsessed with her art and not totally, fully, and completely committed to the relationship. She seems to have worshipped this person in love.

Nietzsche was a German philosopher and maybe she is utilizing Nietzsche here to symbolize her tendency to be too rational, technical or even intellectual in her relationship.

She seems to have gone through a stage of self-introspection and noticed this tendency to be too "Nietzschean". Thus, she noticed that this tendency -- of seeing her relationship through Nietzsche's eyes and being his kind -- brought the relationship down and failed in their relationship as a whole and where it was destined to go. She noticed this and realizes she wasn't being herself, but merely appealing to her intellectual tendencies.

By saying, "you were not my superman" she is trying to get the idea across that this lover wasn't truly what she'd though they were before. Nietzsche believed in the "Overman", or "Superman" -- a being whom has overcome or surpassed modern man and epitomizes and symbolizes all that is great. This is Nietzsche's so-to-say god in that he seems to sublimate himself to inevitable coming of this being. So, this can incorporated here to symbolize that her lover wasn’t truly her god (which she states at the beginning of the song) in that they weren’t truly her superman – if you remember that she is seeing everything through Nietzsche’s eyes.

Logically make sense?

You guys are probably on the right track if not correct. Anyway, what would all of this have to do with Friedrich Nietzsche (the German philosopher)?

John Lennon – Woman Is the Nigger of the World Lyrics 20 years ago
It's simply about the fact that women have been opprssed my men for a long period of time throughout our history as people. I think John saw this because it was still around at the time, as opposed to now where women are becoming much more equal with men in a lot of ways.

When he says, "Women is the nigger of the world, yes she is, think about it", John Lennon is telling the person to understand this metaphor. It's a metaphor because the same way in which niggers, or Black African Americans were treated in this country for a large part of our history, women too have been treated all over the world forever (and this means for most of our history). I love this metaphor and I think more people should understand it: it's very lovely.

Blacks, as well as women (at least in America) are becoming much more accepted as equals among white men, and among men in general. I love how Lennon expressed things so beautifully. Just as my name expresses, Lennon was a pure genius.

John Lennon – My Mummy's Dead Lyrics 20 years ago
True, it's off of John's "Plastic Ono Band". This song is simply about his mother's death, his feelings about it all,the way it impacted his life, and how he reacted to those changes. My mom died last year and I can totally related to not being able to "get it through my head" in the sense that I couldn't accept the fact the she was just gone. It was ingeniously written; Lennon is commended for this song. It's short and sweet and it gets right to the point and it explains everything is so few words. I love it. Plus, the sound of the song itself is just powerful: it's sad and gloomy just like the feeling of losing a mother. A great song even though it's about a minute in length.

THis song is simply an expression of quote from Friedrich Nietzsche, a German philosopher who was an Anti-Christ and wrote about very important things. Manson is a huge follower of his philosopher as am I and most poeple who have a brain in their brain as big as Manons' which is functioning on a sufficient level.

This is the qutoe: ""The thought of suicide is a powerful solace: by means of it one gets through many a bad night" -Friedrich Nietzsche"

John Lennon – Working Class Hero Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is against materialism and Capitalism, but more importantly it talks of how democracy is a complete lie. Consider this:

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see

This line tells me that we have been fooled by our teachers, presidents, and anyone else who may have ever told us that we are living a free society and country. This country is not what it seems: the government and all of the poeple whithin this country are merely putting on a superficial act. Just as George Carlin talks about in You Are All Diseased! Carlin talks of how America is full of it. Lennon is saying that we initially planned to have a free socitey where the government did not have as much control over anything, but now, we have regressed as a nation: we have gone in the direction we have come from. Look at Bush, we are not a free nation, and everything this current administration is doing is against anything the founding fathers and the phiosophers from whom they got their ideas meant to be done.

Governlment and religion are buddies and they always fool the poeple by putting on superficial acts, Lennon is saying that he cansee this while most poeple just live with it.

Yes Matty, it is good that poeple sarifice their lives for the betterment of humanity and mankind. And Lennon was defintely a martry of the human race.

This song is simply against anything that doesn't have to do with peace and serenity, where poeple live and let live. I think someone should jam this in front of the white house, maybe Bush will understand how wrong he is, being war president in all.

I think this song is so simple. I don't usually think that about Lennon's songs.

Anway, this song, to me, is simply and ode to his son, whom he quite music to spend time with. Now, if someone like John is going to quite their ultimate love in life for their son, then I'd expect that they write something about that person.

John Lennon – God Lyrics 20 years ago
First off, some of you were dead on, and some were merely a waste of time.

If anyone doesn't think Imagine is meaningful or sensical ,they can view my comment on it. Then come to me and tell me why it isn't sensical and rational.

This song is my favorite along with Imagine, although, I cannot choose which one is better: they are both great.

But this particular song, to me, means what others have stated, it's anti-faith in the primitive sense, and then, it is about self-reliance. I believe it was about self-reliance because John Lennon was a natural born poet and phliosopher. I have always stated that JOhn LEnnon was a genius, just after hearing Imagine, it was evident. But, I also have come to believe Lennon would have been a philosopher easily had he applied himself in that way.

So, it is totally rational to believe that he was talking about self-reliance in this song, as, it is much better to value and follow one's own thoughts, which are their own reality. Plus, Im pretty sure he read writings from Emerson and Thoreau, whom were part of the Romantic Era in American Literature. This Era put more empasis on the person. Emerson wrote an essay enitiled Self-Reliance, while Thoreau wrote a paper entiled Civil-Disobedience. These thoughts talked of non-conformism and honesty to one' self. This is what I think Lennon was trying to convey with this song.

I think the Beatles line was just to show that he wasn't merely a Beatles member, he was much more on his own, aside from the talents of the rest of them.

About the first verse, I think it does make sense that Lennon was saying that God is just an abstract thought within the mind, just a product of human imagination, which can sometimes be irrational and meaningless, while seeming rational and meaningless. This is the human brain and much more poeple should learn of it. God was invented by man and it is false. It's merely an illusion.

Anyway, that's how I feel about this song, other than the music is pure genius on it's own. Perfect. Just like anything Lennon did.

John Lennon – Imagine Lyrics 20 years ago
"Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky"

This can be broken down much further beyond what is apparent to everyone. Poetry can hold/bear/hide many things within it while having relative meaning, and I believe that every person has a reason when they write something, which is then interpreted by everyone differently in their own ways.

So here we see that he is saying, basically, that religion is false, it's ficitious, it's not realistic, and reality is what he is telling you to imagine yourself turning to. Religion can see things that aren't there, and that is a big reason for most of the violence and for the unsettled status of the world we live in. This song is basically about peace and what better rid the world of than false religious views which alter reality in men's minds? Lennon himself called for the eradication of Christianity, which is why I believe this is what his reasons where and just what he really meant.

Also, it is telling men that there is nothing to fear with religion, it's just a way to live, and if you imagine there is no hell and no heaven, you can live life with clear eyes, not blurred eyes that see many things that aren't there.

Personally, I view the belief in God and heaven and Satan and hell as a labyrinth. This device was invented to box your minds. If the belief in god was a mental labyrinth, what would the walls consist of? The lie of hell. Seeing as fear is all that keeps you from just deeming it all false, which is what Lennon is calling for, when he says imagine. It's a mental game and to win all you have to do is simply not believe in it, and with great reasons, you can deem all beliefs in any deity or divinity false, you can. There is no sufficient reason for holding any true belief in god, therefore, what does it hurt to just not bother with it?

If you can imagine you can achieve, as that quote goes. Everything starts with a dream in a man's mind, just like an architect, and all dreams are possible to an extent, and I believe Lennon's dream here is totally plausible if men learned to take their heads of out their you know where.

This is what I think of the first verse alone, and to write on the rest would take too long, so Ill just say that is it about what others have stated, world peace.

Personally, the majority of you poeple are full of it and a big waste of reading time. It isn't worth reading if you aren't going to add anything relevant to the meaning of the song. As I have just shown, true explanation is better than some stupid idiotic comment about the person, rather than the song.

Comment on the song please!

And I am 17, so don't think I am some old person who is intollerant, I am just taking this too serious to read stupid comments.

Think! That's all I ask. And, Analyze, don't judge!
