It Dies Today – The Caitiff Choir: Defeatism Lyrics 15 years ago
This song isn't too hard to figure out once you really read the lyrics, but I believe it can be definitely open to interpretation. I feel like it could be either the death of a relationship or possibly this guy wants their lives both to end. It seems like he was EXTREMELY immoral, I'm guessing maybe raped her or something to the point where he feels like they both need to leave this earth, and him possibly killing himself too... or it could just be them ending a relationship, like I said. I feel like there definitely could be more to it, just because the song is so dark.

The song does use a little bit of mythology, but it's just to get a point across. Overall though, tt is from the point of view of a man who has made many mistakes with a partner and regrets them, and knows it is time to end this suffering without struggle, which is the definition of defeatism, so the title fits the song perfectly.

Here's a couple of specific interpretations that I have come up with (but it's up to you to believe what you want)

Surrender and know I've failed you.
Now let the darkness swallow you whole.
Nothing could ever compensate,
For what I've done to you.
Tell me, is there any recollection of a time,
Before the abhorrent smell of death,
Masked all the sugary scents of springtime...
And these apparitions led me astray,
Into the bowels of perdition?

--> He is saying to realize that he's been terrible and that it's time to just move on from this mess since there's nothing he could ever do to make up the terribleness he's caused. When he says... let the darkness swallow you hole.. I think he could possibly be referring to this person dying, possibly physically or also just breaking up with this person and breaking up of course is really tough, so maybe that's a way of saying the bad times are going to take over. I am really undecided on which meaning it could be, but either way works.

Together, we created a world void sunlight:
Darkness fell, as we walked away.

--> This one is a bit tougher for me as I'm not sure what "darkness fell" means. I don't know if it means darkness fell through and was gone (as in, the tough times left after they walked away from their relationship) or if it means the darkness fell over them because they died together after they created this terrible life (world void sunlight). Again, interpretable.

Before an individual so cavalier, yet so depraved,
Laid you down upon the shores of Acheron.
Before we became immersed in iniquity.

--> This person is supposedly a really good person. They have many good qualities but on the inside, they are really quite terrible and immoral. When he says, laid you upon the shores of Acheron, he is referring to a mythological river of misery. And the he says, before we became immersed in iniquity, which basically means they both were immersed in sorrow. Again, I have a feeling this could be like a rape because he laid this person down into a bad place and then was immersed in iniquity, and iniquity just means like a very immoral act or a sin.

And as we walked away,
The sky, it seemed to turn to black.
We did create an environment that's oh so dolent,
But I'd give anything to change these memories
Back to reality and return us to the light.

--> When they left, everything started getting darker because of all the terrible things that happened. I'm guessing this is more of a relationship because he keeps saying "we" did this, and "we" did that. So I'm guessing it's not a one-sided thing, but hopefully it's understandable why I thought that.
He says he wishes he could change the past and end up in a happy place.

Surrender, and know I've failed you.
Now let the darkness swallow you whole.
Nothing could ever compensate,
For what I've done to you.
Now walk away and end our days.

--> He is repeating the first verse, to just reiterate that he has done something and they need to both -walk away-... which he does say a lot in this song, walk away from this or walk away from that, so that is something that puzzles me as well. I'm not sure what he means by 'walk away'. It could be taken at face value, them actually leaving a situation, but I feel like something more could be meant. Again, I don't know.

Overall, this is a beautiful and extremely dark song, and I love the lyrics. They may trouble me, but it keeps me thinking. I love It Dies Today :)

Sugarcult – The Investigation Lyrics 17 years ago
I personally envision a guy sitting there, smoking cigarettes, magazines lying around, and basically he's a mess. He wants to make his life work with this person, but he's basically a bum who is worthless -- "this could be perfect if I wasn't worthless"-- And he wants a life with someone but he can't leave his lifestyle for some reason or another. In the end, he's still investigating all this, but still a bum just 'watching it burn to his fingertips', meaning, not really doing anything about what he is investigating upon - "a perfect love" and "a perfect life with you"
