Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – The Mercy Seat Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the "but im afraid i told a lie" is a confession. He lied, he was guilty and is afraid to die. Also the fire and smoke imagery makes me think of baptism by fire - by accepting his guilt and fearing god he's forgiven and baptised by fire. Thats just how I see it...

The charachter really does smake of Randal Flagg in The Stand. Thats what I thought of the very first time I heard it. But what about a dual nature entity. God and the devil as one with the Red Right Hand playing out "gods" darker side. also "hes a guru" - more than just the trinity? more than just christianity? I dunno.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Into My Arms Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song. Im an agnostic, dont beleive in god, angels but my partner does, so I can really identify with it. Its about how inspiring love is, the narrator has been inspired to think about god and the existence of angels because of how this person has made him feel.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – The Carny Lyrics 19 years ago
yeh. really creepy song. the motif through it is pretty clear. but the line "In the hope that the carny would return to his own kind" makes me wonder did he leave and go off with someone like a woman or someone from the local town?

This song is about a whore house..example:

"they stab them with the steely knives but they just cant kill the beast"(the knives are there peckers and the beast is the woman.its saying no matter whaty they cant please her enough)

"the warm smell of colitas"(you tell me)

Who ever you are, you're a sexist idiot. People go into prostitution for mayn reasons and are unhappy people who need societies help, not just girls with a large libido.

Also you can stop taking drugs and stop being addicted, you can leave so either the song lyrics are wrong or the drug theory is wrong. Theres very few things or metaphorical places you can never leave. I have still to hear or read an interpretation that doesnt have any holes it and where ALL the metaphors can be realistically intrepretted to the same meaning.
