| The Smashing Pumpkins – Ugly Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| To me it's all about a love he feels he shouldn't go for, for some reason. When he sings "I'm good enough, but I don't care" it's like he's trying to talk himself out of loving her... And rather than being depressed, he's trying to assure himself that even if he did go for it, it wouldn't work. But in the end as he sings "The sun is out, but I'm not there" and those lines, it's as though he knows the love would be something great, but he still hesitates... | |

To me this song is just perfect. I see in it feelings that the love he has for somebody he knows are wrong for some reason, but he just doesn't give a fuck anymore if it's wrong or right, he's getting sick of moral obligations he feels and just wants to experience the raw lust for once especially in the lines "What are we waiting for?" but the lines "And if you lose yourself Could you take me, too? Could you rest inside the sleep?" show he would still wait for her... The line "Coudl you take me, too" signify to me that no matter how strongly he wants this love, he still respects her. |

to me it's all about trying to pinpoint a feeling. Trying to describe the beauty of being in love. I feel it's a very simple yet extremely beautiful song "You're sleeping in your bed Just rest your weary head Maybe you shouldn't care Throw away those dreams and dare " To me this is all about taking a chance with love. |

| Having said that: to me this is a love song. Perhaps he feels transended by a love he feels for somebody and at first he feels that love is returned, but towards the end he begins to think it isn't so... that he was wrong all along... too late to discover peace of mind... and perhaps it sent him down the wrong road as he went into the trip hense "too late to recover". (you see the song isn't about the drug, but about how the drug effects his feelings... to me anyway) | |

| God damned... why does everybody think that just because you they did a lot of drugs, that's all they wrote about. Some drugs may deepen your feelings or confuse your senses, but you still feel real emotions... The only thing that changes is how deeply you feel about some things, or how those feelings are interpreted. You don't automatically fall in love with LSD, but the love you feel for another person may twist around into God knows what... | |

I agree with Sarlightfading about it being about a relationship he can't have, but I believe it's one he hasn't had... One he's just wishing he had a chance for. "don't let your life wrap up around you don't forget to call, whenever i'll be here just waiting for you i'll be under your stars forever neither here nor there just right beside you i'll be under the stairs forever neither here nor there just right beside you" When I hear this part I think perhaps he even told her he loves her, but something keeps them apart. It's like he's telling her he'll always love her. "Don't let your life wrap up around you/ Don't forget to call whenever" to me signifies that perhaps they were friends he wanted to take to the next level... this song is pretty straightforward. I think pretty much the only symbolic line in the song is "with my face pressed up to the glass wanting you" which to me is just a symbol for the obstacle that keeps her from him. |

Absolutely perfect song... "I go along Just because i'm lazy I go along to be with you " I love this line... He's too lazy to hide the fact he just wants to be around her. He's too lazy to play the games everybody else seems to play. Their love songs are so open and blatant it's beautiful. He doesn't play the games of saying things indirectly... he just busts out with "I'm in love with you" and passionately starts to just belt out "So in love" towards the end... it's all perfect. |

Lyrically, I feel like this song is intended to not make perfect sense, to set you adrift amongst the music, to insert parts of ideas through the lyrics to remind you of something inspecific love lost, childhood memories, your first kiss, who the hell knows. It can bring it all to you. But to me the lines that tie it all together is the "You make me real..." to me it's a mixture of a love song and a rethinking of old ideas. "lately I just can't seem to believe discard my friends to change the scenery it meant the wrold to hold a bruising faith but now it's just a matter of grace " to me this part is about a fall from the beliefs he was raised in. I may be way off... The whole idea of disgarding his friends to change the scenery may seem caloused, but perhaps he just wants time to sit back and think... The whole recurring theme of "you make me real" perhaps he just wants to think about love, perhaps there's somebody he never told, or never will never love him and he's just... tired... |

I believe it could be about something he could never have. A love he could never know. Perhaps there was a time when there was a chance (wrap me up in always and drag me in with maybe's). In fact, to me, the whole beginning is hopeful, it's all dreamy as though he's lost in the feelings of love. Then in comes the guitar and soon after Corgan comes in with "I believe in never, I believe in all the way, but belief is not to notice, belief is just some faith, and faith can't help you to escape" It's as though he wakes up and realizes all his dreams and feelings of eternal love for this woman are in vain. For some reason, he feels they will never be together. The lines "if you spin your love around the secrets of your dreams you may find your love is gone and is not quite what it seemed to appear to disappear beneath all your darkest fears" and so on are just about how he loves her so much, he feels he could never love another. "Forever frozen forever beautiful forever lost inside ourselves" to me symbolize that exactly. He is forever frozen in place. He will never love another. "The night has come to hold us young" perhaps he is talking about dreaming of her and the hope in the "hold us young" part is perhaps because in his dreams he is free to love. But this is all just my interpretation. |

"...wanting someone else to be happy more than yourself, like loving someone so much that their happiness is all that matters." I agree with Prozakruin, to me it's about giving up in the sense that you no longer care for your own happiness it's just wishing somebody else to be happy, even if it means you won't be. |

| To me its all about a love he feels he could never have. Whether he feels he's undeserving, or the woman he loves is with somebody else doesn't matter... Love unrequited is love you never had so it doesn't make sense to me that it is a break up song. To me the lines "Dirty your face with longing and grace, God-given" seem to wrap it all up. The lines about "restless in my speach/ ruthless in my teach" and so on are all about how he loves her and he tries to show her through his actions, and his speach, but he's still afraid to just come out and tell her. Perhaps she is in a relationship with a friend and that's what he means by "When will I see her again/ the other side of friends/ the darkened clouds of death/ the empty-breathed desire" and also because the last lines: "life just fades away/ purity just begs" to me sort of show that he doesn't want to be the cause of the break up and "Dust to dust we're wired into sadness" seem to point out that he feels he has to wait, yet he also knows nothing will come of waiting... like his life has been programmed to be sad. | |

As to interpretation, I like the idea of it being from the perspective of a person in a relationship they know is going nowhere. Along comes somebody else, somebody who seems amazing... The person in the relationship could end it and take a risk on this new amazing person and have a chance at heaven or they could continue on with what they have even though they know they'll never be as happy and they know it. "It's not enough, just a touch" to me the repititioin of this line is like the inner struggle, through innocent interaction they feel a connection that only makes them long for the person more. To me it could be about a married couple where the wife & husband perhaps got married because of a kid, and they know it's going nowhere... Perhaps the wife finds somebody and feels that her only shot at happiness lies with him, yet she feels obliged to stay with her husband "for the kid". Life is complicated, so there's millions of interpretations. I just like this one. Life's about taking risks... |

| Hey Sundayatnoon... if you want to start lists there are a hell of a lot more songs where the titles seem abstract. Think Twice, my friend. Besides Kaisute did use the word "usually" which implies that there are exceptions to the rule. By the way, if you notice he quoted Corgan, therefore I'm sure Mr. Corgan knows what he is talking about when he speaks of how he names songs... Just a little F.Y.I. for ya. | |
