Daily Texan: Waters is definitely an amazing shredder, but let's talk about your guitar work on the album. What brought about that 3-part guitar harmony in "Independent"?
Robert Flynn: The whole concept of that song is loosely based around [late PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist] 'Dimebag' Darrell. Around the time of his death this guy named William Grim put out an article on this extremely conservative web site called The Iconoclast entitled, 'R.I.P. Dimebag Abbott and Good Riddance.' It basically called him a scumbag that brought this on himself. It was pretty vile and it was published the day after his murder. I copied it, and sent it to Max Cavalera [SOULFLY, ex-SEPULTURA], who ended up singing on the track. So the topic of the song is a response to that and three-part guitar harmony was just going for this big, epic guitar-oriented outro piece with piano and strings as a kind of tribute to him. |

It's weird how a lot of Sabbath fans seem to think this is a terrible cover but it's more of an "interpretation" of the original and personally I think it's the best cover I've heard (*cough* Megadeth *cough*) of the song. There's not many bands that could take Black Sabbath and successfully make a doomier version of it :-) |

Peter Steele has said in interviews and on stage that he sees himself actually as Bacchus which is further supported by his obligatory bottle of wine at live shows which a friend of mine had hurled at him =P (complete with guiatar string scores down the side of the bottle)
That said, I do agree with TsolPhigher about it being a drunk talking to/confiding in Bacchus/the bottle. |

There's definately echos of Bloody Kisses in this one if you ask me although it's the reverse situation, rather than wanting to join his love in death, he wants to bring her back to "life".
Meanings aside, it's probably my favorite song on the CD with Kenny's vocals (he alternates with Pete in a twisted yet united duet) just amazing. |
