Oasis – She's Electric Lyrics
|
I agree strokesman. When I first bought the cd 5 years ago, I used to rewind over and over the "and I want you to know..." part just because I am obsessed with the way Liam sings that "WAAAANT" part. It is just so wonderful and heartfelt. People who dislike Oasis need to get their heads out of their asses. Their first 2 albums are classics, but even "Be Here Now" is brilliant besides 3-4 songs and all their others have their moments as well. The new one though is easily their best since "What's the Story". |

Sunny Day Real Estate – The Blankets Were The Stairs Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
This is the reason why SDRE is considered godfathers of "emo". This song is essentially the same kind of stuff TBS, Bright Eyes, etc. are singing about now. Personally I don't consider SDRE to be emo (if anything, I'd say melodic alt-rock), but you can see why so many newer emo groups cite them as influences. |

Sonic Youth – Unmade Bed Lyrics
|
I love love love this frickin song. "Sonic Youth" and "Murray Street" were the 2 albums that got me into Sonic Youth, and I am so thankful I stumbled upon them. Thurston reminds me a lot of Stephen Malkmus, particularly in the way they sing...anyone agree? |

Pavement – Here Lyrics
|
Actually, to put the debate to rest, "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" is the best indie-rock album of the 90's, hands-down. If Pavement reunited and toured, it would be as well-received, if not more so, than the much-loved Pixies reunion. And if they made another album or even just 2 or 3 new songs, my head would explode from sheer joy. |

Fleetwood Mac – Sara Lyrics
|
I agree with you spunheart. None of Fleetwood Mac's lyrics are groundbreaking are overly-complex, but they are well-written and intelligent (esp. the Stevie Nicks songs), but the production and arrangement of their songs could be lessons on how to make great pop music. |

Huey Lewis and the News – Heart And Soul Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
No comments on this song in the 4 years since it was posted? Come on! This is easily one of the greatest singles of the 80's. An perfect example of how to craft a deliciously catchy and memorable pop tune. Whatever anyone says about 80's music, the pop music was for the most part really good and HL&TN were one of the better bands in their time. |

Oasis – Live Forever Lyrics
|
For the first time ever, Liam may not be totally wrongheaded. They actually have the right to be cocky about this song, because it is brilliant and an anthem that ranks with anything else made in the 1990's, and I'd argue it's one of the 3 or 4 best singles of the decade for sure, but that doesn't dismiss the fact that AT BEST, the first 2 Oasis albums are merely competent records that have a few great anthemic-singles on each of them, but that's it. Every album they released after "What's The Story" is either totally mediocre or totally awful. I truly think Oasis was a band that had 2 good albums in them, and really nothing else. They weren't even the best brit-pop band. If you wanna hear truly great brit-pop, get Blur, Doves, Pulp, and Bends-era Radiohead. |

Coldplay – Square One Lyrics
|
i agree completely with thetaste_ofink. The lyrics for the most part are very bland universal-frontman-ish without the more personal and dark lyrics of the past 2 albums, but the melodies are some of their best ever and the change-ups, arrangements, song structure, choruses, etc. are their best yet. |

The Smashing Pumpkins – 1979 Lyrics
|
I just rediscovered this song, and it is so great. Definitely one of the best songs of the 90's. I bought this CD in 1995 when I was 11 yrs old and hated it (except for Tonight, Tonight) but recently got it again on a whim and can't believe how good it is. Not as brilliant as Gish or Siamese Dream IMO, but for a double album, it's great. |

My Bloody Valentine – I Only Said Lyrics

To be fair, the lyrics (as Shields himself has said) were just meant to blend in with the music, and he claims he didn't pay much attention to lyrics. |

ha ha. Pavement is pseudo-intellectual because he prefers to spell things correctly? Geez people. |

Son, Ambulance – On the Concourse Lyrics

Joe Knapp has a wonderful voice. This band should be as well known as other indie-pop bands like Wilco and The Shins. Son, Ambulance is just as good IMO. |

Son, Ambulance – Brown Park Lyrics
|
This song has a very Ben Folds-ish feel. Am I the only one who thinks that? This sounds like something off "Rocking the Suburbs" or "Songs for Silverman". This song would be better with a chorus, but it's still good. |

Coldplay – For You Lyrics

This is more proof that Coldplay's best music is their B-sides and early EP's. A CD of all their B-sides, rarities, import tracks, and EP songs would be the best album ever made. |

The Magnetic Fields – I Don't Believe In The Sun Lyrics
| 19 years ago

no offense, but his name is spelled Stephin.
And yes he does have a gorgeous voice. I just wish more people knew about the Magnetic Fields. They are one of the best indie-pop bands ever who seem to only be appreciated by indie-hipsters or grad students. |

Coldplay – White Shadows Lyrics
|
I agree with mcthingy, but only about the latest album. The first 2 had some really personal and heartfelt songs that truly did rank with Joshua Tree-era U2 in terms of anthemic power and timelessness, but the lyrics on X&Y are mostly bland and derivitave, which is also the same problem I have with the new Weezer LP. |

The White Stripes – When I Hear My Name Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
White Stripes are not about lyrics anyway. Jack has said before that the lyrics are not as important to him, and that is understandable. The man is a genius producer (listen to Lorreta Lynn's "Van Lear Rose") and a brilliant song composer/arranger. That is where his real strength lies, which is why the last 2 WS albums have been the best IMO.
Still like this song though. The album though is highly uneven. |

The White Stripes – Cannon Lyrics

Their debut LP was dedicated to Son House, and this is considered one of his best songs (and one of the best off that album IMO). Jack White is a huge fan of old blues music like Son House and Robert Johnson, and this song shows just how passionate he is about the blues. |

Spoon – Stay Don't Go Lyrics

Great production on this song. The best thing about Spoon is the way they make such expressive and intricate songs with such minimal elements. Listen to this song or "Paper Tiger". The melodies are original and interesting and inventive, and they never repeat themselves. |

Spoon – The Way We Get By Lyrics

Spoon is SOOO Underrated. These guys have been writing the best pop music of the past 5-10 years and nobody knows who the hell they are (besides indie hipsters I guess). "Kill the Moonlight" is a classic LP you all need to own ASAP. |

The Cure – Untitled Lyrics

I had a crush on a girl who had a boyfriend, and this song is like my personal thoughts transferred to music (of course much more poetic and beautiful than I could express). I used to dream of this girl and pine for her all the time and this song was a huge comfort for me after she went away. Thank you Robert. |

The Cure – Closedown Lyrics

The whole album of Disengration is genius. This album got me into The Cure about 3 years ago, and these guys are brilliant. I was always anti-Cure since I was a die-hard Smiths fan (I guess Morrissy hates Robert Smith and vice-versa). While The Smiths remain my fav band forever, The Cure are great as well. Did I already say I LOVE this album? It is truly indispensable. |

Morrissey – Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself Lyrics

My fav Morrisey song post-Smiths. I heard this the other night at a music shop and now I cannot stop listening to this. I forgot how great Vauxhall & I is. That album IMO ranks with any Smiths record in greatness. |

My Bloody Valentine – Blown a Wish Lyrics

im in love with all of mbv's song, and this is a personal fav. With MBV, there's really not much to interpret. As soon as someone creates the MusicMeanings website, then we can dissect MBV. Kevin Shields himself said the lyrics don't mean that much in his songs (though I do think they are highly personal). |

My Bloody Valentine – To Here Knows When Lyrics

A really weird thing happened to me when listening to this song. At about the 3:00-mark, my body felt like it was drifting away and my hands dissapeared for a while and then I saw a light and maybe God himself...oh wait, sorry, that's just Kevin Shields. |

Kings of Leon – Taper Jean Girl Lyrics
|
One of the few good songs by this band. Seriously, the lead singer's voice is just really not good (and no the "but I like how bad it is" thing cannot be used here). He just overexpresses to the point of comedy. And the lyrics for the most part are really lame and make no sense. But I will admit this song is so damn catchy. This whole tune just moves at such a momentum that you can't help but get caught up in it. |

Modest Mouse – Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset Lyrics

o I blame this town, this job, these friends
The truth is it's myself
And I'm trying to understand myself

I've change the whole damn plan
These lyrics are MY LIFE as of right now. Isaac Brock is a genius. Anyone between the ages of 19-14 can relate for sure. |

Modest Mouse – Ohio Lyrics
|
One of my favorite songs off their debut album. I love early MM because their lyrics were (mostly) about being stuck in shitty-ass, dead-end towns that offered nothing to him, so he is expressing either his distaste or outright hatred for everything. Plus, I love the angular, jaggy guitar playing and the fact that some songs are typical 3-minute verse-choruse-verse-chorus songs that then have like 5 minute instrumentals in them too. This song and Lounge and Custom Concern would be good examples of this I guess. MM is awesome! |

Coldplay – Clocks Lyrics

I LOVE this song. The melody is brilliant (though I am a bit dissapointed that the boys lifted most of it for Speed of Sound) and the lyrics wonderful. This album hasn't left my car for weeks (and Colplay is driving-around music BTW). |

The Blood Brothers – Love Rhymes with Hideous Car Wreck Lyrics

Really good song. The one that got me into them. The lyrics are surreal to the point of making sense again, if that makes sense. They seem to be pure id (or superego) unhinged and untethered. These guys write songs straight from the soul and I love it. |

Those lines geoffk quoted are beautiful. I can't stop listening to this album, and this song in particulor over and over.
"You said to go explore those other women
The geography of their bodies
But there's just one map you'll need
You're a boomerang you'll see
You will return to me"
Thats probably some of the best lyrics from a BE song ever. So poetic and lovely. |

Neutral Milk Hotel – Naomi Lyrics

To LuckyMonkey - I see what you are saying, but it is inherently wrong. Jeff Magnum (in a great interview you should all read with Pitchfork) said all his songs are sincere longings about his heart and soul. So I think it is more realistic to consider this a song about a girl who Jeff knew/dated and cared a lot about, but ultimately left him or something to that ilk. A lot of Jeff's songs from this album are about women leaving him or being too different or incompatible with him, and I think this is the perfect example. I have always thought of it as song by Jeff about a girl he had a crush on or was in love with but never able to tell her how he really felt.
And on a side note, I agree 100% with joystreet, who submitted the lyrics. The first 10 seconds of "Naomi" sound EXACTLY like a Pixies song. |

Neutral Milk Hotel – Gardenhead/Leave Me Alone Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
"Follow me through a city of frost covered angels
I swear I have nothing to prove
I just want to dance in your tangles
To give me some reason to move
But to take on the world at all angles
Requires a strength I can't use
So I'll meet you up high in your anger
Of all that is hoping and waiting for you"
That is the most beautuful and wonderful group of lyrics I have ever read. Seriously...they leave you speechless. That is pure poetry. The first time I read/listened to this song, these lines nearly brought me to tears, just because of how jaw-droppingly gorgeous they are. Jeff Magnum is some sort of God, that much I know. |

Weezer – El Scorcho Lyrics

Yes...Rivers is really a genius. Though the last 3 albums were good, none of them have captured the pure innocent and naked honesty of Pinkerton or The Blue Album. I mean seriously...Rivers would never write a song like this again, and it's a shame too. I love "Make Believe", but there are no songs as honest and heartfelt on there as this one or Across the Sea or The Good Life. What makes Rivers a real genius is that he takes these happy and fun poppy hooks, melodies, and choruses...and then fills them up with all these downbeat and negative lyrics...GENIUS! |
