Bright Eyes – Old Soul Song (For the New World Order) Lyrics 10 years ago
Heard Conor explain this before a song - probably gonna get this all wrong but i THINK he said it was about going to an anti-war protest in New York City which was well-meaning but in the end was just a load of hipsters who wanted to mean something and protest for the fun of it and then the police dispersed the protest and they all just went and got high instead (could be that "...you dropped the paper in the water and it all begins to bloom..." was an acid reference?).

Anyway, that's as much as I can remember....

Conor said this was set in New York City in 2004. Some friends of his went to some big protest and he got roped along. He kinda hung back while they all went rioting and loads of his friends ended up getting carted off into police vans etc...

Coldplay – Death and All His Friends Lyrics 11 years ago
To me this is a song about worrying that you've rushed into a relationship/marriage and then things get difficult (as they can do) and you worry that maybe you've made a mistake or that it won't last but you want to persevere and try your hardest to make it work.

Sufjan Stevens – The Child with the Star on His Head Lyrics 12 years ago
Even without taking into consideration all of the lyrics, this song really speaks to me of disillusionment with the modern commercialisation of Christmas and the numbness that occurs in the realisation that most of the good we ever tried to attribute to this bastardised pagan holiday has all but faded away now. And yet, like that star over Bethlehem, the idea of Advent transformation and of possible rescue shines on in the hearts of some noble believers. And shine on it shall!

John Mayer – Daughters Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this is pretty clear cut. Mayer's not really one not to wear his heart on his sleeve, and this is quire clearly about a guy who is trying to be in a relationship with a girl but she's so messed up emotionally (possibly from a bad relationship with her father) that he's forced to give up on their relationship (presumably so she can go and work out her daddy issues) rather than just hope that the guy can fix all the things inside her that her father broke.

Boys are a lot less 'emotional' or at least 'emotionally driven' than girls, and so he's making the distinction. He's not saying that girls aren't as strong as boys, it's more that they genetically tend to think more and analyse situations and their history and the relationships in their lives etc.

This is one of my favourite and I think one of the saddest of Elliott's songs.

Christopher O'Riley did a piano tribute album of Elliott's songs and this is one of my favourite tracks on the record so I uploaded it to YouTube - check it out:

Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Lyrics 13 years ago
This last stanza kills me (pardon the pun!) every time, because it's so true.

To me it means to say that, given the circumstances, any of us could be capable of the horrible things that this man did. You can even see that, were it not for John Wayne Gacy's terribly sad upbringing and various mental illnesses, perhaps he wouldn't have done the things that he did.

Talk about 'let he that is without sin cast the first stone'......

Blink-182 – Easy Target Lyrics 14 years ago
This album is weird and I love it. What I mean is, I love 'old Blink', I love 'new Blink', but this is like the record where they shifted from dick jokes to real emotions. A bit like if Justin Bieber released an amazing indie record. I don't know many other bands who've done this, yet people still pass Blink off as one of these commercial pop-punk Hollywood and Vine bands..... weird!!

What a record!!

Nine Inch Nails – Underneath It All Lyrics 14 years ago
@DJgif I think for some people it's harder to deny God. I was an atheist for the first 20 years of my life and I'd spend my days blissfully denying God's existence in discussions with other atheist friends but when I'd go home at night and lay awake in bed I just knew that I was wrong and it scared me. I KNEW there had to be something more. It was like I was in The Matrix or something. Friends I mentioned it to told me that I was weak and that they didn't need God as a crutch to get through life, but as it turned out, they were the ones using disbelief as a crutch not to have to find answers to the burning questions. I'm glad I asked the questions, and even more glad that God answered them.

Nine Inch Nails – Heresy Lyrics 14 years ago
This might seem like pop-psychology 101 but the fact that his parents got divorced even though supposedly being 'Christians' probably messed him up a bit, as it would any kid. Not to oversimplify but I'd imagine that's the kind of 'hypocrisy' which, experienced at such a young age, will stay with someone right into their later years. If all you know is people who profess to be Christians but then behave in a different way, then what else are you supposed to think about God/the Christian faith?? But again, this could just be a song from a snippet of time, rather than what Trent actually believes....

submissions
Nine Inch Nails – Heresy Lyrics 14 years ago
I feel a bit 'guilty' (is that the right word? Awkward perhaps?) listening to this as a Christian, just because the lyrics are so far from what I believe, but it is a very interesting song with a killer beat; even 10+ years after this style of music was thought of as 'cool' and cutting edge, I still enjoy listening to it.

I am always aware with music that these are just words in a song; they may not be what the artist truly believes, he may just be playing a character, he may just be trying to vent anger over feelings of being mislead/indoctrinated in his youth. I think it's probably the latter, because whether you believe in Hell or not, surely nobody wants to go there? I mean, you can jokingly think that if it does exist it'll be full of rock musicians and guitar solos and hookers and blackjack, basically one big party - but if it's a Christian invention and the Christians say it's not a great place to be, then if it DOES exist then I don't think anyone can truly WANT to go there. I mean, confused goth kids and embittered atheist adults can always joke about ending up there, even if they don't actually believe it exists, but if they did believe it existed, they'd probably change their tune. Following this logic, I'd say Trent was probably just using hyperbole to play a character, which makes for a very interesting listen!

(I prefer 2008's 'The Slip' anyway......)

This might be my favourite song on the EP. So melancholy. But with a sense of release.

I hear the creaking and yeah, it may well be a rope, or a rocking chair - I just love that it keeps 'creaking' as the last parts are repeated with the repetitious chorus of 'I'm goin.....I'm goin.....I'm goin........'

It's kinda almost like he's just sick of it all and he's really ready to 'go', whether that means to die or whatever...... I have days like that sometimes. Not to the point of wanting to die!! Thank goodness... but just like 'I am so over this life and all of its problems and pains - Lord I just wana come home.'

Bitchin song.

The Raconteurs – Top Yourself Lyrics 15 years ago
People seem to not agree with you, but I must admit - I actually came here and found this page to see if people thought the song was about Meg!!

I remember hearing something about her having a breakdown or something, forcing the Stripes to cancel loads of shows, and so I wondered if the song was (morbidly!) about Jack thinking she was just attention-seeking, saying 'I don't care that you've got all these problems, now I've got my other projects, you're nothing without me, if you wanna kill yourself, go ahead; you probably couldn't do it without me holding your hand anyway!' Which I know is a really harsh thing to say, especially given that both Jack and Meg seem like thoroughly nice people from interviews etc! :-)

Anyway, what's with all the haters saying you're retarded and can go screw yourself just for having an opinion?!! :-D Some people need to chill.......

Stone Sour – Cardiff Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't know much about the song, or the band, but I heard the title 'Cardiff' refers to the capital city of Wales in the UK. Corey apparently said in an interview that Cardiff is Slipknot's favourite city to play in, after the amazing crowds at their first ever stadium gig there. Makes me slightly proud to live there now! Not that I'm a Slipknot fan or anything....

Coldplay – Death and All His Friends Lyrics 17 years ago
This is one of my favourite tracks on the record. I agree with 'ihatehatehaters' in that the end chant could have gone on longer and been made epic, but there's always live shows for stuff like that, and also I always find with stuff like that, better to have way too little of a good thing than far too much...

Maybe I'm reading too much into the songs on this record, and I don't claim to know what's going on in Martin's private life, but a lot of the songs seem to possibly deal with his supposed relationship problems at the moment... a lot of the songs are about people 'rushing into relationships' and taking things too fast, which might have happened to him...

However, to me this final uplifting song is quite plainly saying 'we rushed into stuff and got married too fast and yes, perhaps that was a mistake, but everything's not lost (haha), just come over, be patient, don't worry, things will work themselves out'.

The Long Winters – Hindsight Lyrics 19 years ago
This is my favourite song on the album.

To me, for some reason (possibly only the line about 'invitations on blue paper'), it is about a man who's getting cold feet about marrying a woman, only it's not 'cold feet', but rather a certain knowledge that it's just not right. Maybe he felt pressured into proposing and she's just excited about being a bride.

He's afraid that the girl knows it too, but will just plow on hoping that the doubts will go away and they'll be happily married:

"...but I'm smoking cigarettes when no one else does..."

He's the only one prepared to do something nobody else will, in saying that he thinks they should call it off, because as bad as it'll be, he'd rather that than make the mistake and be left with the consequences:

"...and if I hold you now will I be holding a snowball
when the season changes and I'm craving the sun?"

If he doesn't do what he feels is right, will they be stuck in a broken marriage by next season?

Head Automatica – Please, Please, Please (Young Hollywood) Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah I kinda also get the feeling that it's about a girl who a guy (possibly even the singer) really wants to have sex with, but she's denying him it based on her faith, and he obviously doesn't like that so he's trying to 'tempt' her into it. He's getting really worked up and angry because she's then like the forbidden fruit that he really wants but still can't have, and only because she has a level of self-control and morality that he obviously doesn't.

This song did put me off the band a bit, I know it shouldn't have... Like, I know that songs are just songs, but this one sounds like it might reflect real feelings of hatred towards 'God' which in my book is just dumb... But other people have said the same, so I guess I'm not alone?!

John Mayer – Something's Missing Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm not a big fan of John Mayer, but this song is quite good. I'm sure a lot of people can relate to it, but it still suprises me that more people don't see 'major dissatisfaction' coming up in their lives and wonder beforehand if all the money, friends and respect in the world can fill that hole.

I'm with some of the other guys who've posted in believing that this life is the 'support act' before the greatest band in the world, so to speak, and will be proud to attest, yet again, to finding total fulfilment in my Christian faith. However, I know that most of the posts might sound kinda 'boasty', although I'm sure they're not meant to, and I'd like to say how good it is that there haven't been too many 'flame' type replies to these Christian-oriented posts.

So yea, great song, good commenting. And if more after me comment on how God has changed their lives, please be kind/understanding to them/us :)

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 19 years ago
I'd agree with many on this song, that it's about being angry with God for seeing fit to take somebody home, possibly before what we may think is 'their time', but also accepting that it's in His perfect will; that we can't ever fully understand why He chooses to let people die when they do but that He's God and so there must be a good reason for it, even if we can't see it.

Athlete – You Know Lyrics 19 years ago
Yea, I was wondering if that was the point of the song even before I knew about Athlete's Christian roots, so I'd imagine you've probably hit the nail on the head! They're definately singing about a huge amount of love, so I don't see how they could be singing about any other form of it than God's love for the people and things he's created.

Athlete – El Salvador Lyrics 19 years ago
I'd like to think that was what it was about, it's such a good album opener! I think it's being features on the soundtrack for Zach Braff's new film, which is cool. Also think it could relate to dissillusionment with being in a rock band?

Michael Jackson – Dirty Diana Lyrics 19 years ago
Whilst it may have been disrespectful for him to call the late princess Diana a 'right dirty scrutter', I highly doubt that she's going to mind....

I think it might be about groupies, or it might be a Lou Reed style commentary on the dangers of some type of drugs, especially ones that are freely offered to the 'pop star scene', such as cocaine. Just a thought!

Jimmy Eat World – For Me This Is Heaven Lyrics 19 years ago
About the first line,

"The first star I see may not be a star"

Where I live (the UK), on clear days towards the end of the summer, early in the evening/morning as the sun goes down/rises, one of the planets (i think it's Venus) shines brightly, quite low in the sky. It looks like a star, and it's the only one in the sky at those times. I think it's where the phrase 'Morning Star' comes from, and I think this song might be using it as an allusion, comparing mistaking Venus for a star with mistaking a like for a love.

Great song. Simple yet brilliant. They opened the set with this song when I saw them play in Cardiff, and I've only just been able to find a live version. Hoorah for BitTorrent Bootlegging!

I'm gonna say the correct lyric is 'Maybe I've been partly cloudy', rather than 'part of the cloudy', you know, as in the weather forecast?
