| The Cranberries – Ode To My Family Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
"my mother, she held me when I was out there" as u already mentioned, her family was against her leaving home and further studies for singing. Especially her mother, so I can imagine how her mom must have held on to her, reluctant to let her leave when she was outside the door, about to leave .. "my father, he liked me" now, this is the line that strikes me as excruciatingly poignant in the simplicity of the twist from "he Likes me" (present tense) to "he Liked me" (past tense) .. Her dad had a motor accident which incapacitated him to the extent that he became "mentally retarded" (in Delores' own words) and lost his emotional awareness to his daughter he used to care deeply for. |

| Radiohead – Where I End and You Begin. (The Sky Is Falling In.) Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I think this song is about the frustration between "believers" and "non-believers" - the fact that religion has become a battleground, and that there is no solution to be had. Thom is taking a step back and looking at the situation, and the dire circumstances that inevitably will follow - namely violence "I will eat you alive" and/or stubborness on both sides "there'll be no more lies" He's "up in the clouds" - watching with horror the fact that our societies will never reach a solution, so long as we are unable to accept each other's personal beliefs. |

| Radiohead – No Surprises Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
It's about hiding from emotion...not allowing yourself to BE yourself. It's about a society that is so afraid of being themselves...of being DIFFERENT. It's about the loss of individuality and how that leads to a mundane depressing existance. "Such a pretty house, and such a pretty garden" - making everyone THINK you are happy...but "no alarms and no surprises" - not being able to enjoy anything. |

| It's about fame and the fanatical fans and his inability to deal with it...and his inability to talk to the media - he has a really tough time in interviews and gets very frustrated not being able to communicate (except through his songs). | |

Songs always mean different things to different people - since you are in different states upon hearing them. For me this song relates to me being in relationships with several girls at once while getting over a divorce. I was dating around and ended up getting kind of serious with one girl - hurting her and in turn myself. Then one day I decided simply not to lie anymore. It was so inspiring to release myself from all the lies....so empowering. This song gave me additional inspiration to be myself - not what others wanted me to be. The gap represents the lack of connection between me and these partners. Gaps large enough to house dinosaurs. Being "up in the clouds" and unable to "take part" in relationships because of her leaving me. The "X" marks the place where I decided to be honest to myself and others...the release point...the "parting of the waves". "I will eat you alive" is the empowerment....the repetition reinforces the will to stay honest and the empowerment that provides. Anyway - that's my private and personal meaning to this song. |
