Coldplay – Twisted Logic Lyrics 20 years ago
From Martin on this song, Q writes: "That's the only song that people have told us not to put on the album. But they're wrong. It's all about the lyrics, and I'm proud of that song because it's angry and very dark and there's certain songs that I don't care what anyone says to us, we're going to do them anyway."

Coldplay – Swallowed in the Sea Lyrics 20 years ago
From Martin on the song: "This and What If and Fix You have always been on the album. It was meant to rip off [The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl's] Fairytale of New York- its not as good, but that's what you always do, you try and better another song."

Coldplay – The Hardest Part Lyrics 20 years ago
Chris Martin on the song: "It seemed too sunny, but then the album's called X&Y, it's about contrasts, so when we started putting it together it seemed needed. It's very necessary now."

Coldplay – Low Lyrics 20 years ago
Q mag write from Martin "A turning point. We had this piece we'd written on tour in Zurich and I'd listened to it on my computer and think, That's a great thing. And then I was in San Diego, and just as I was leaving the hotel, I had this idea, so I went to the lobby piano and worked out these chords. And then we booked ourselves into a tiny rehearsal space and we all got such a buzz from playing that it made us realise we had gone wrong on the recordings of all the other songs. I realised last August that I was missing everyone else and Low was what brought us back together."

Coldplay – Speed of Sound Lyrics 20 years ago
When asked about the songs meaning, singer Chris Martin says: "The first single. It's about miricles and has a great chorus. It came from a time when we were quite disparate as a band. It was when there were tons of paparazzi everywhere and we just locked ourselves in a bedroom."

Coldplay – X&Y Lyrics 20 years ago
When asked about the song, bassist Berryman says"Our A & R man said it should be the first single. So we scrapped it." Frontman Chris Martin says "I was bathing my daughter and we were listening to I Am A Walrus, and I thought, Oh, you don't have to go, verse-chorus-verse-chorus, so I went in the next day and chopped out about three minutes. Then we added the strings, and this bit on the end. And then it was good."

Coldplay – Talk Lyrics 20 years ago
When asked about the song, Champion: "It started off with a Kraftwerk sample [it nicks the riff from the German technocrats' Computer Love]. Chris wrote a letter to Ralf [Hutter, Kraftwerk kingpin] in German." Bassist Berryman: "The record company said, 'This has to be the first single.' So we scrapped it, re-recorded it, scrapped it." Martin: "I flew back to New York for a day and mixed it. Then I was able to enjoy it as a song, rather than 1012 ideas that weren't right."

Coldplay – White Shadows Lyrics 20 years ago
I have the album, and he must sing it live, completely differently. Anyhow, when asked about the song, bassist Guy Berryman says this, "I always liked its off-beat rhythm, and its not like anything on our previous two records. It wasn't on the record for a long time. We'd spend ages recording songs and then you just get fed up of them."

Coldplay – What If Lyrics 20 years ago
This is how drummer Champion explains this song, "Lyrically, its the best Chris has ever written. It sounds really pompous, but you know how Imagine talks about how what if everything was great? This is the flipside to that: if everything's shit, what would you do?"

According to Martin, and I quote "We tried to steal off Many Rivers To Cross but make it more about death. The first song to be recorded and we went back to the first version after 18 months." And from guitar frontman Buckland "I put about 80 guitars on it. We took off 79 of them."
