I love this interpretation. I love this song and I love love the cover (oh, the blasphemy) by Greg Laswell. I hadn't heard of Hersh until now. I like her a lot. :) |

The original song by Kristen Hersh says, "Blaze across my nightgown." Before I knew it was a cover I thought that meant the girl he was singing about died in a fire but since the lyrics are the above... It's a bit cryptic. She may have meant like... A flash of light at night while she walks. It reminds her of the person she lost. It's like a flashback I guess. I dunno though. The rest of the song is pretty obvious though. |

This song is just stunning as are all their other songs. This song's lyrics are very reminiscent of "Lucy Gray" by William Wordsworth. The poem is about a girl and her parents. The girl is sent out to get something from town. But before she gets back, a blizzard blows in. They never hear from her again. No one knew if she lived after that. The tragic poem takes many parallels in this song's lyrics. So, I am not sure, but I think that this is based on the poem. I mean, Lucky Gray left at night. And they never found her, yes. But I think that could mean in the song that they found her to be gone. As in, they didn't find her when they looked for her. But they actually found that she was "so gone" because she never came back. If she had died, the wind would have swept over her, burying her in snow. Her body would have been gone by spring. But either way they found nothing. And the hint of a sad false hope that will never- and did never- come true of them finding Lucy some day was there. They thought she was out there. I think it's worth reading Lucy Gray for. If it was based on the poem, it just gives me so much respect for them. More so than I did, which means a lot for me. I love these people. They deserve a lot of recognition for their music. They are geniuses. |

okay well lets go through it and then give a n overall.... "Stand up straight Do your trick, turn on the stars Jupiter shines so bright when you're around They tell us slow down We're too young, you need to grow Well speed's the key, And they don't know who we are" She is in love so much that she knows he would do anything for her. But people are saying that they are too young for such a relationship, and that they are going faster than they should... but she believes that they should be able to go as fast as they want, because she knows hoe in love she is. also she says that they dont know who they are when they are alone together, and how in love they truly seem. "Mother, don't tell me friends are the ones that I lose cause they'd bleed before you Sometimes family are the ones you choose It's too late now, I hold on to this life I've found" Her mother tells her that friends, and boyfriends always come before family. but she says its too late, that they are so close that he is family now. Who's to say we won't burn it out Who's to say we won't sink in doubt Who's to say we won't fade to grey Who are they anyway, they don't know she is just saying that, noone is to predict anything will happen in thier relationship, and anything could happen, happy, or sad. "And you say we're too young But maybe you're too old to remember And I try to pretend but I just feel it when we're together And if you don't believe me you never really knew us You never really knew" The people rejecting the relationship say they are much too young, but she responds by saying that they may just be too old to remember how it felt when they were young and in love. also, one time she almost was talked into breaking up the relationship, but when she saw him, she couldnt do it. And if they dont believe her of how in love she is... then they must have never truely knew either of them. "You and I packing up my room We feel alright But we're not welcome, soon we'll be driving Cause they don't know who we are" She now doesnt even feel welcomed by her own family and she's sick of all the things they re doing to try to break apart this relationship, so they run away together. "Stand up boy, I shine so bright when you're around." just a great way of saying that she love him, and being around him.... So... this song is about a rejected relationship, and the trials, and tribulations of her friends and family tryingto break them apart, then leaves to be happy with the one she loves, and to not be unaccepted.. -Cavin |
