umm i dont think anybody necessarily died, the car (their freedom) just got wrecked... another episode in the perhaps innocent, immature minds of adolescents. I doubt he'd be speaking of a memory if he had died in a car wreck.
"and it was all and it was nothing at all" seems to emphasize how much the speaker misses those idyllic days of couple skates, etc but how in comparison it was unimportant in the grand scope of things... but that my opinion

"selling star-maps to the sun"... seems to mean that society gives life advice to and perhaps forces opinions each person, though each person already knows how to live his or her life. The sun already knows stars, it doesnt need a map
