Regina Spektor – I Want to Sing Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's a depiction of love sung from the point of view of a harsh realist. One who hates the way it can take over your entire being and all your mind and soul and make you feel such strong uncontrollable primal emotions... one who realizes that the obsessive nature of young love is dangerous, and such a passionate affair must burn out eventually to rescue them both.

Yes, love is one of the most incredible and enjoyable things in life. But I hate it, I hate losing control of myself. I feel trapped in such an intense and passionate relationship, but all the while I savour every moment of it. The desire to be in it passes in time, and age and experience... which is a comfort. I need that knowledge to be able to open myself up to let myself feel...

I can relate to this song so deeply. I love it. :)

I'd also note the word of the word "credence" in this poem. At the end of Demon of the Fall, his actions (trying to kill her as it makes sense to me), mean she loses her acceptance of his death ... but her words here help him to accept it himself.

I'm not sure how literally the lines "written in dust" and "I confess my hope" should be taken. He might possibly have found himself able to communicate with her in that way? That's always been the way I've seen this song, although it can be interpreted differently.

I read a while ago that it was the drummer Opeth dropped, Anders Nordin, who played this. There was one other piano piece that just didn't quite make it onto an album (I've no idea where I can find it if this is true and I remembered rightly).

Opeth – Demon Of The Fall Lyrics 20 years ago
This is the part of the story where he finally tries to kill her, as per my interpretation of this story. His motivations are explained earlier on. He wants to kill her so they can at last be together in their "abode 'mongst the stars" (Madrigal), and she had at first even asked him to take her away (April Ethereal). But now she has found someone else, "I heard whispers in the parlour, the gilded faces grin aware of my final demise" (When), and has moved on. His actions here take away any loving feelings she had left for him, and she also loses her credence, her acceptance of his death. He realizes this at the end, and his voice is truly saddening.

Opeth – April Ethereal Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is one I can really relate to. When I was very young (about 3 years old so I can barely remember it) after my uncle died I saw him waving goodbye to me in the mirror. But then when someone very close to me died recently I had flashbacks of this image and really expected to see her face in the mirror, and at times I even imagined I did. But whenever I looked she was gone. So the first two lines are quite chilling.
The way he describes his presence in the 3rd line shows he's hidden and can only be seen by actually LOOKING for him, and the 4th line 'like a bird of prey over the crest' is almost an early omen, a sign on things to come later in the story.
This sort of haunting atmosphere continues into the song "...final word was mine", and in the 6th line where he says "the icon smiled", this refers to the narrator himself, describing himself as her icon. He believes that she loves him very deeply and would do anything for him ... this has other implications which also become apparant later in the story.
He turns out the candle and tries to embrace her ... this reminds me of one other time when grieving for someone, I wasn't sure if I could faintly feel her outline in the air before me, and in the darkness I could almost see a mistly outline. I was completely awestricken by this, even though I'm sure it was imagined because I was so much in denial about her death at the time.
Then it seems to show him running from the reaper (the scythe being the hook he carries), and upon hearing her ask him to "Take me away", he pledges to do just that and returns to the forest, hiding from his destiny and waiting for his chance to do this for her.

Opeth – Madrigal Lyrics 20 years ago
This shows his sadness at how she can't see him and barely even senses his presence ... instead she stares right through him. The line "I am the idol that would long to caress our eyes until they would open no more" shows that he still believes she is obsessed with him as she was when he was alive and they were in love ... and he wishes he could kill her so they could be together in their "Abode 'mongst the stars" (which he attempts in Demon of the Fall).

Opeth – Serenity Painted Death Lyrics 20 years ago
The way I've always seen it is this: As they sleep cuddled together they pull her away from him and slit her throat. She dies staring blankly into his eyes. In his anger he tries to kill them all. Eventually they overpower and arrest him, and the next track of the album tells of his execution.
