| M.I.A. – Galang Lyrics

This song is about pot trafficking. purple haze is a type of weed, and London slang is mostly spoken by minorities and young people in England. Basically, the character in the song is a youngster trafficking pot in Sri Lanka, is getting chased by the person he or she is dealing with , and might get caught by the police one day. Trafficking drugs and sucking a few dicks is what gets some ppl enough money to flee to London, but M.I.A. is saying that working and praying is what they should be doing instead, and she does not agree with all the shit ppl have to do for a living in her country. It is really tough. Remember, M.I.A. is all about politics.
And p.s., most of british slang derive from Jamaican patois because when England had dominion over Jamaica years ago, many Jamaicans took advantage of it and fled to England. This also exploains why English is spoken in Jamaica, along with Trinidad, Tobago and Grenada. |

M.I.A.s father was a huge political figure in Sri Lanka. She grew up knowing how tough it is to want something and not be able to get it because your government forbids it, and the mass else is too busy revolting and killing. Chinna girl isnt just a prostitute, but a woman trying do desperately to get away from the political unrest, facing the fact of not being able to eat a decent meal everyday, or even catching some sleep fearing a random bullet hitting her. Her only way of getting quick money is by selling herself for enough money to get a visa and succeding abroad to help your family as well.
M.I.A. admits that her songs are all political and referring to where she is originally from, and how unjust and hard it is for Sri Lankans and other 3rd world countries out there. people will do anything to go to america or england, only to realize that those lands of opportunity dont always get you as far as you hoped it would, and that really hurts. Trust me, I know. I am from Haiti and I understand perfectly what M.I.A. is trying to say. |

Dockwat's analysis of the song is very deep, and very true. Marley was an activist, and it is thanks to him that Jamaica is now one instead of two. Did you guys know that Jamaica was divided into east and west, and Marley threw a concert at the border, played all of his deep political and love songs, and left the audiance so awed and amazed that they fought to have their country reunited. It was similar to the whole east and west germany thing that went on until the Berlin wall was broken down. |
