I agree with doondawg. We always think of love or peace or even our death as the definate ends, and thus the end of death. But death is a constant; it'll keep happening even when all of our tomorrow's are gone. |

I agree with _Mr.Me_ to a point. I definately don't think it's about betrayel but burning desire. Not a crush though, but for a former lover in a too-good-to-be-true relationship. The returning part is more obvious with lines like "When are you coming back?" and "Bird on a branch will come back home to sing." My insinuation that it's just *too* good comes from the lines about him wanting to "bust the clouds," "drifting overhead," and "grass on your back been hanging in the air." She's got her head in the clouds and he wants her to come back down to earth, to him. |

I think it's about some one who's depressed. The person didn't live, she just "walked the earth." Went through the motions of life, "talked and never spoke a word." He talks about facing big things, not talking about the big things. And when some one's depressed, they usually aren't much company, so the writer would feel "alone again." |

I think the "white elephant" is his child. As bluegoldbird said, a white elephant was a rare and expensive gift that could not be gotten rid of once it was bestowed to you. It was something high in value that could become a burden. It may seem cold to look at it this way, but a child is very much like a white elephant, especially in a world that seems so dangerous when you are in charge of caring for one so helpless, a "sitting duck." But, in the end, he will "rise up," because when you look into a child's eyes, it takes a very callous person not to become overwhelmed with love. |

I think that ciofie T wrote an awesome explanation, but I just wanted to add that I think the line "Just to keep us warm" is referring to how they're willing to burn the bridge of their friendship just to feel "warm" or close/wanted/loved/protected/etc. for however short a time it may be. |

I think the "roads left in our shoes" line means that they both still have paths in life that they have to travel and places to go before they die, but if the one he loves dies before that, then he'd rather die too. |

whitewolf666, you right that Italian and Spanish are very similar languages and that Josh Groban does sing mostly in English and Italian, but this and the song "Alejate" are both in Spanish. The translation provided above your comment is very accurate. I normally don't like picking fights on this site since it's designed for the opinions about songs, not people. However, I was very offended by your shock and disgust at the suggestion that Josh Groban sings in Spanish. Spanish is a beautiful language and one I enjoy singing in a lot, almost more than English. Please don't bash some one or something before you are absolutely sure that what you say is true and is done in the most civil manner possible. |

He also points out how ironic and almost disgusting it is that in such a "Christian country" you still see people who are poor, homeless, and hungry begging on every street corner.... "quarter in a cup for every block".... Also, I think the "sun goin' down" line isn't a jab at the Resurrection but a jab at people who use their "faith" as a front or a selling point. Their actions, when seen by some one who doesn't believe like Ben, only diminishes Christianity's credibility. It makes Jesus "go down." |

I agree with couchmonkee that he's remembering people who were important to him, but they drifted apart naturally. Yet, now he wishes he'd said things or done things before everything had changed so much that it's too late and there's no point caring anymore. |

This song is not only beautiful, but also incredibly passionate. It's such a unique blend of the intensity of the timpani and tamborine part with the smooth flow of the vocals and violin. I think anyone who's seen some one suffer so much before their death can immediately connect with the meaning. And the interpretation of life after death being a dance in starlight is hauntingly gorgeous. That'd probably be heaven for me, with the addition of a gentle rain shower. :) |
