Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Roberta C. Lyrics 13 years ago
Not well read myself but the authors listed at the start:

Carson McCullers, "Her first novel The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter explores the spiritual isolation of misfits and outcasts of the South."

Flannery O'Connor, seems to deal a lot with religious ethics and morality

And maybe Jerome K. Jerome (not sure) he doesn't seem to fit.

As for the Change and the note, being the pessimist I've always looked at it was suicide. Though it could be looked at in a more positive light as the title of her book she's going to write (Do good Scabble players also make good writers)

Someone who's read works by the above could probably draw more light on to their (certain) significance to the meaning of the song.

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Scattered Pearls Lyrics 13 years ago
Is the "virginity" lost here that of going to a disco for the first time.

Young girls dressing up to fit in with the older men (and the crowd in general), by putting on the beautiful pearls for there first night out.

Only to realise there actual worth after the incident and learning one more lesson that comes with growing up.

Such simplicity can be interpreted in so many ways which is what makes this such a song (well most of CFTPAs). It makes it so easy to put yourself in the place of the narrator.

Tonight Was a Disaster

Sufjan Stevens – It's Christmas! Let's Be Glad! Lyrics 18 years ago
The "Lalalalalalala" bares some what of a resemblance to a recording by the Alabama Sacred Harp Singers on a compilation I've got. The songs a version of Whilst Shepards Watched their Flocks By Night called Sherburne. Wonder is Stevens is referencing that song here?

Bright Eyes – Four Winds Lyrics 18 years ago
"There's endless entertainment
Thinking the world is going to end
I've lived some nights convinced of it
But I keep waking up again"

Though I listened to the Cassadaga Track-by-Track Podcast and from that it's all just about religion.

Against Me! – Pints of Guinness Make You Strong Lyrics 19 years ago
I my opinion this is about the Irish roots Against Me! have.

Guinness is a stout (which don’t just come from Ireland) which along with lesser known porters were the choice drinks of labourers due to their high levels of nurturance. This was back in the days when people actually had to work for a living and the Irish (stereotyped as having curly red hair red hair like James) were known for being good labourers. Hence “Pints of Guinness Make You Strong” it was their hardy beer that made them strong both physically but the drink also gives the Irish a strong character, seen here in Evelyn. The song referrer’s more directly to drinking to forget, “…and the memory of this last workweek will be gone forever” as hard labour isn’t a nice life but you’ve got to bring home the beacon. The market for labourers declined in the post war years and with out getting into the social economics of it all a lot of the Irish are now found in the kind of Irish Pubs you get here in London, think Moe’s Tavern rather than some cheery singing and dancing joint. So with the death of an alcoholic husband (through a heart attack according to Stan) on St. Patrick’s Day of all days Evelyn drank “Irish” (Guinness) to mend or at least numb her broken heart. It was the Guinness that kept her going and "if I would have known just how things would have ended up i just would have let myself die”.

My indepth and thus arsey statement above aside, this is one great song and I jumped to my feet when they oopened there set with it when I saw them.

Gym Class Heroes – Taxi Driver Lyrics 19 years ago
Why did Far need to be handed on a plate?
Bands like Kiss (possibly) and Can (Not mentioned yet and not likely to be a reference) might be passed by due to having nowt the the genre(s) referenced.

Schlep (which the wikipedia link lead me to) is the Lead Singer of the Group and has failed to be mentioned on here. Which Leads me to thinking Mackin' must be a refference to someone due to the spelling.

If soft porn is The New Porngraphers (unlikely in my book) we can make a link between Bounce being a reference to The Boucning Souls possibly as apposed to the actual band.

I like the song, it's not to be too taken seriously and doesn't go to deep but it show's signs of actual wit which has become lost in most modern bands (I've not heard much of it). Their really should be reference to Tom Lehrer and Flanders and Swann in it but that would confuse alot of people.

All just a bit of fun that makes you feel quite good when you get loads of the reference. Almost the opposite of the intenstions (successful or not) of the bands being referenced.

Grandaddy – Poisoned at Hartsy Thai Food Lyrics 19 years ago
I have a feeling (but I might be wrong) that this song is about two people at a restaunt where the food made them very sick and throw up on the table in front of the owner. Lets hope some of it went on his shoe and Billy and Sandra got better. Though know one knows if it was the food that made them ill.

Fog – Pneumonia Lyrics 19 years ago
Not suprisingly this song is about pneumonia "The mold spores fill my lungs". Apparently it was when Andrew got pneumonia that he decide that he was going to stir his life in a music making direction, so much good did come about it.

I always associated the song with depression due the "In the bathroom, with the shower running and my clothes on, I figured out that I hate you all" verse, but it's actualy about using a hot shower to get all the crap out your lungs.

"Is it depression or disease?" It's a mixture of both which makes for one haunting song.

The National – All the Wine Lyrics 19 years ago
To make some more sense of the "nonsensical" stuff picture this:
You're drunk and stumbling down the middle of the road with a bottle of wine in one hand and a dolls house that you've found/stolen from out side someones house. The "I'm a birthday candle in a circle of black girls" I can only think of being moked by them and thinking it's all great becuase your that perfect piece of ass.

The joys of alchol.

Two Gallants – Long Summer Day Lyrics 19 years ago
This song was based on a song of the same name by Moses Clear Rock Platt, which you can hear playing at the end of the album version.
This was writen about the song in a 2gs e-mail.
"we haven't the right to write about our country's embarrassing past. instead we must
stick to the trials of two pale skinned urbanites who have never known a day of struggle in
their lives. if anyone needs us we'll be combing the aisles of the local library, seeking out
the song writing rule book for white kids. it must be in there somewhere."
I just heard the song in a new light at a show where I felt the pain I'm not allowed to feel being white too. The lyrics here are a bit wrong but the story of man in a living hell taking off to kill the man who 'owns' him.

Bloodhound Gang – Pennsylvania Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a break up song. Nothing to do with the wonder's that might be Pennsylvania.
Being english I didn't know what half the references were but now I realise they (the "we") are all crap. The realationship is over. Guessing it's written from a girls piont of view as I can't imagine an 'i' being dotted with a heart by a guy. Is air brushing stuff on to a license plate a manly thing?

The Good Life – Inmates Lyrics 20 years ago
"Fifty ways to get lost" A reference to Paul Simons 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover. My ex liked that song.
This song is pianful, 9 minutes of all the worst things in a relationship and the reasons why you still hang on in there. So many unanswered questions.

Kid Dynamite – Never Met The Gooch Lyrics 20 years ago
To me this song is what it is to be a teenager. It's Teenage Kicks with a kick in the teeth and spitting the blood over Smells Like Teen Spirit.

When life feels numb and you are all alone and lost in crowded city.
Then of cuase there's that girl (or those girls).

The Adicts – Chinese Takeaway Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is very complex metaphore about dreams

Fisrtly you need to find out what you really want from life. Fish, Chips, Burgers or Chinese? What's going to make you happy?

Then when you realise what you're after you need to go out and get it.

But is that what you really wanted?

Rydell – Erratic Erotic Lyrics 20 years ago
I do believe I read somewhere that the band were touring europe with The Babies Three and the skies where enough to inspire this song as they suited the mood. Feeling a bit home sick and possible thinking they should be a bit more by reaching out for America

Bright Eyes – Old Soul Song (For the New World Order) Lyrics 20 years ago
Surely you could just hold a camera with the same conviction that some one might hold a bible with, especail when you really hope there are important pictures on it that you rush back to develope.

As for the event I first thought the Seattle riots but the New York Demo fits in better time wise and I'm also led to believe Conor has been living in New York.

I don't quite know why this song makes be break down, it's not really the content as I start crying in seconds of it starting.

Bright Eyes – I Believe in Symmetry Lyrics 20 years ago
It's song about faith, for the secular according to the writer.
I get the feeling from both the latest albums that Conor is alot more 'comfortable' about his life, ("It's not something I would recommend but it is one way to live" as an example from I'm Wide Awake It's Morning's Lua) he's excpeted the way he is. Here I think he's trying to figure out how that works and fit's in to the bigger picture as "The desert is the sand"
His life isn't a bowl of oranges as it were but if a insects lot in life is to make love to the flowerbed and die in the first freeze never thinking not to accept his fate. Then what is his lot in life? He's so eager to pack his bags (see messanger bird's comment) but then he wouldn't be able to learn the simple things, he has to stay in order to find, or is that the "happiness in death"?

Bright Eyes – Ship in a Bottle Lyrics 20 years ago
I can't remember the exact phrasing but at the Summerset House Bright Eyes' gig the song was introduced as being "about the best kind of love, the kind that's imagianed in your head".

I get the feeling from the "I wanna...." lines that the song's about the love in someone's head for Conor, "The worm in my heart is the apple of your eye". But it can't be (due to the suggested history?), so "Don't adore what is impossible".

"DON'T you love what is intangible" That's one to to view it.
