Metallica – Hero of the Day Lyrics 20 years ago
I would say that the war definition would be valid, but one thing that people don't appear to understand is the window part. A lighted window has been a metaphor for welcoming for a very long time, and it is used in lots of different songs and types of music, like CCR "put a candle in the window", and countless songs talking about leaving a light on for people. The window burns means that this person, be it a soldier, or just someone who is losing everything and wants to go home, wants to still be welcome back home. People leave lights on when they know someone is going to be coming, like on halloween, when you're willing to have kids come and trick or treat your house, you put a jackolantern out, a light. the idea is that if there is a light on, then the people are still thinking of you and expecting you to come back. The next line, a flame that warms no matter where they've gone, is talking about the comfort given by knowing that light is on. The candle in the window, although not giving any actual warmth to speak of, still comforts that person, and it doesn't matter how far away that candle is. and the can you hear your babies' cryin line is asking if they can simpathize with him. That's the main things that i wanted to point out. the rest seems to be there pretty good.

Guns N' Roses – One In A Million Lyrics 20 years ago
I feel this song is talking about a guy who gets pissed off at the world, and then kind of thinks he's above it. Then there is what people are saying to him, with the whole your one in a million deal, it's like he's thinking he's better than everyone else everywhere, angry and hateful because people haven't treated him with respect. People are saying "hold on there, your feeling pretty high and mighty, but come back down a bit before you end up getting yourself hurt" all the racial slurs and such are just showing his despise for the HUMAN race, not any one in particular. The line about being a smalltown whiteboy is like saying that you judge me and hate me for what i am, well, i hate all of you. He hates the "boxes" that people are put in, and doesn't feel like it's fair, but if they're going to do it to him, he's going to give it right back. I really like this song, and listen to it almost daily, but i don't think it's meant to disrespect anybody, but more show them that disrespect is there, that people judge each other.

Audioslave – Shadow On The Sun Lyrics 20 years ago
i don't know if people still look at this song, but i love the "shapes of every size, move behind my eyes" stanza, and how it's sung is wonderful. I feel that part is talking about a person changing. The shapes being ideas and feelings, and moving means they're changing. so he's changing is big ways and small ways. then the doors bolted from within is talking about who he used to be and how he can never be that person again, for better or worse. and then the drops of flame lighting candles always remind me of tears, like someone crying until it burns or something, and then lighting candles in memory is talking about sort of remembering how it used to be and being sure not to forget. then the lives inside my skin means that he still believes that there is a part of him that still is that person, but that person will never be who HE is again. I just think this whole song is about change, but i think it comes out right there.

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics 20 years ago
Oh, and since it's late and i'm tired, and kind of irritated, does it piss anybody else off when people purposefully mispell words to make them either shorter or "Look Cool"? I just hate it when i see "because" spelled "becoz" or similar things, i don't mind poor spelling, mine's not perfect, but when it comes down to it, our language is decaying fast enough to where the word "dude" can mean anything you want it to, and thereby means nothing. I just find it becoming harder and harder to express myself without people thinking i'm an "elitist" because of using larger words. The reason people resort to those words, is because all the common ones no longer carry any meaning, like "awesome" or "amazing". I know this doesn't have a lot to do with the meaning of smells like team spirit, but i would imagine a lot of songwriters feel frustration when trying to find words to express the meanings they want. When a simple pen can be "awesome", how would you describe the apoclypse?

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics 20 years ago
One thing that has only been touched on a couple times about nirvana, and is a big part of why i like them, is they are simple. People have talked about the guitar not being great, and lots of arguments have gone on about the lyrics, but when you listen to nirvana, for the most part, it's simple. The music is simple, the tone, the lyrics, everything. There are two main reasons i like nirvana, one, i just like the way kurt sings, it's not like he's got a wonderful voice, or even that unique of one, since he just sounds like most people do when they've been yelling for a long time, but he puts everything into his songs. If you try to sing along and put as much feeling into it as he did, then it will HURT. The second thing, is that the guitar, and really all the instruments, are only part of the music, too often bands will be completely about a guitar, or whatever instrument they play best, and they go overboard. Bands like Creed do it a lot. They play so many instruments that the melody is almost lost, it becomes baroque(art refference, meaning so complex that it distracts from meaning or beauty). I haven't heard all of Nirvana's songs, but I've heard a lot, and i like those two things about it.
