This song is brilliant,I love how all the instruments are introduced at different times and their introductions are staggered through the song,they don't come in all at once.I like it how he talks about being a kid and then uses the phrase "dolly mixtures", as in the sweets,to describe how he's now messed up. The world is a small child in the dark is a reference to the fact that the world as a whole is afraid of things that aren't even there.Like what are produced from big scare stories in the media.Just as a child can't see what's in the dark so it becomes scared.Could also be about the future,people worrying about their lives. He says about looking at the sky and taking the black from the white.When you look at the sky everything just seems so simple and you realise how complicated we make life for ourselves. Then he talks about time,older people look back and treasure time,he didn't then,but now looking back thinks that what they said was true.As time moves quickly and is as distant as a satalite. |

I love it when he starts to make the noise of the train,I think thats brilliant.I love it when he finishs doning that and he's coming onto the last verse and his voice seems to be going on for ages before you reach the verse.The bit where he says "rear window".It is pretty dark when he says "If its all the same to you,here's what I going to do,I'm going to buy a gun,gonner shoot everything, everyone and then I'll come for you because it was you who drove me to" I think he's using the metaphor of the train to show hsi last chance or opportunity,and how he doesn't want to miss it,but it's not worth comtemplating if he did |

This song is fantastic and I'm sure its one of the best they've done,the guitar rift reminds me so much of Rage's Wake Up.But that just adds to its charm.Definetly one of the best on the album.I love the typical Travisism in the line "people get down,people get down, people get hurt,when you did it to me I was already in the ground" because the first time you hear it you just presume he's going to say dirt,because its the logical thing. I think the song is mainly that he is unsure of what he wants,he knows someone and he wants to be more than friends with her,but it could be that it would be too much bother,she'll never accept him or there's something else stopping him from going out with her.Thus he accepts he can't have her so he's happy just to be friends,and he could be accepting that he could have everything he wants with her,with the exception of everything that a relationship would bring. "I'll never get into your heart,though I don't even want to start,I'll never get into your heart I'm just happy to hang around." |

I think he's talking about racism in America as well,as he says you plant this deamon seed,all the racist ideals and philosophies,your raise a flower of fire,this then produces the lynchings and mob culture that was around in the southern states.He then mentions then burning crosses I direct reference to the KKK.It is about hyporcisy. I think he's also saying that to some people everyone has their price, "he's peeling off those dollar bills"Talking about corperate greed and American imperialism People put profit ahead of people. Obvious biblical references to Jacob wrestling the angel in Genesis which he was given the name Israel (Wrestles with God) so it could be a reference to Israel? Or what America was doing in the Labonan at that time. Also a reference to the crusifixtion |

I think this song is brilliant,especially the guitar solo,and it's very poetic at times "his thoughts like a hundred moths trapped in a lightshade."I'm a christian and the lyric about Jesus raping the spirit he was supposed to nurture,intrigued and disturbed me.After a while I thought that his dad had been in trouble and had gone to the church for help.I thought that Zach was juxtaposing the sufferings of Christ with that of his father and that his dad thought he could recieve help.But the church failed him,I thought perhaps Zac had missed the point and blaimed Jesus instead of the failings of those in that individual church.Because he says "THEY, try to escape across the street, where Jesus stripped bare,and raped the spirt he was supposed to nurture" Sometimes though we can make mistakes and go overboard in trying to please God(I've done it) when you don't actually have to.His father felt he should burn those paintings,and not use his gift for God,when Zac felt that God was completely against it his father's talent,when undoubtly it was probably God who gave him the talent to paint. |
