Kings of Convenience – I Don't Know What I Can Save You From Lyrics 20 years ago
To me, it's about someone who he has known in the past, probably someone he had feelings for and someone who he may have loved, but the timing wasn't right.

Years passed by, and then he gets a random call from her, she's possibly drunk and down. She wants to see him, and whether right or wrong, those feelings fome rushing back to him.

He wants to help her, he wants to love her, but he doesn't know how. He doesn't know what to say to reconcile the past. He wants to save her, but from what, and at what emotional cost to himself?

Death Cab for Cutie – Passenger Seat Lyrics 20 years ago
I try not to imply that songs from non-religious songwriters have religious meaning, but since this is all about what this song means to me personally, I have a few perceptions about this song.

First of all, I do agree that this song is speaking to the subject of true love in a pure, simple, yet complex form.

When I hear this song it reminds me of a human’s interactions with God. A relation with an infinite all-knowing being who is in control, who is in the driver’s seat of life, and the human is in the passenger seat as God is driving him home.

He considers things that are of this world; of human creation (satellites) as well as things that were not made by the hand of man (shooting stars). As he contemplates these things, he is confused on how they interact (“do they collide?,” I ask, and You smile.) After being thoroughly confused by such a complex idea, he realizes that there are things greater than himself. He is overwhelmed by the realization of this notion, but is comforted at the same time: “with my feet on the dash, the world doesn’t matter.” He ends this thought process with the realization that when he is perplexed by many things that he is confronted with, there is someone who will be his guide, for all time.

I hope someone got this interpretation and is comforted by it as I am.

True poetry.
