thanks for that about hugo ball - i always loved this song, but assumed it was sung in some african language, as DB has always been into borrowing from other cultures... but then again, are we sure that hugo ball didn't write it in swahili ??? maybe its just another boy meets girl ballad to someone from malawi. |

the thing that struck me about this song is the unmistakable arab flavour, which seems like a blatant bit of finger-pointing. the blind obsessions of fundamentalism can be found among zionists and the christian right to similarly destructive efffect. interesting that on crowded streets he sings "you're always so right" but on live in chicago it changes to "we're always so right" - which at least broadens out the accusation. |
