Counting Crows – Another Horsedreamer's Blues Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is very clearly about Sam Shepard's "Geography of a Horsedreamer." Check out the book: "Four Two-Act Plays" by Sam Shepard. It's a good read and it'll make this song self-explanatory. In fact, I was disappointed to find the lyrics are...too obvious. They're only cryptic if you haven't read the play.

Something to note: when the song says "pills" it isn't referencing normal drugs. In the story, "pills" are sleeping pills. The only way a horsedreamer can "dream of horses" is by sleeping. And in order to induce sleep during the day, many of them take sleeping pills. There was one particular line in the play which mentions a guy taking several pills and sleeping for two (?) weeks straight. The lyrics mean that “Someday, Margery might take a whole bottle of sleeping pills so she’ll never wake up.”

In other words, she did not “turn to drugs.” She’s not addicted to anything. She’s not a prostitute or a druggy. She’s just a little girl with abnormal luck. She can guess the winner and the second place horse for the next race whenever she falls asleep. And this “gift” has forced her drunk and abusive parents to take advantage of her every night to bet on the horse races. She goes along with it because she doesn't want to let everyone down, but secretly she wishes she could go outside and be free.

Edgewater – Circles Lyrics 20 years ago
Its about a girl who's in the background. She seeks popularity, she seeks acceptance. She's made it in the crowd, but she's never been the center of attention. But for whatever reason, she views herself as a misfit, she has a very low self esteem. She is never the center of the spotlight, instead, she's always in the back waiting for someone to notice her. She sees others in her same position and befriends them, hoping to gain a status that would impress the populars. But sadly, nothing she ever does is good enough, in her own eyes... its implied that she might even hate her own life. And that's where the singer falls in, who sees this girl from afar. He sees her do all of this, he sees her constantly hate everything she ever does... and he feels as though he's the only one who understands her. He hates to see her in such a position. So much so, that he can't get her out of his head. -- That's my take on it. I've been in a similar position.

Staind – Outside Lyrics 20 years ago
Ok... well, I looked through the first several pages and nobody really seemed to understand what this song means. So, I'll give you my interpretation... but I'll put the song in a relationship’s perspective:

---

"and you bring me to my knees again
all this time that I could beg you please in vain"

Basically, the guy feels love for the girl, but she doesn't feel the same. No matter how much he begs for her, his efforts are in vain.

"all the times that I felt insecure for you
and I leave burdens at the door"

Wanting and caring for her was a waste of his time. She could never understand him or realize how much he loves her—but he obviously feels he understands her very well. The last line is about the guy debating if he should give up the whole situation.

"I’m on the outside.
I’m looking in."

The guy’s saying: I am not you, I cannot be you. But I try desperately to understand what is actually going on with you...

"I can see through you.
See your true colors."

He’s saying: I believe I know you well. I know what you mean; I know how you feel... I know your inside.

"'Cause inside you’re ugly.
You’re ugly like me."

This can be interpreted many ways. I think it basically means that no matter how she feels, he knows she's no better then anyone else. Though she might feel good enough about herself to act 'b-tchy' and superior, it doesn't mean she actually is. Her looks on the outside are stunning... but on the inside... she's heartless and cruel.

"I can see through you.
See to the real you."

I can see the real you... you are not worth my time.

"All these times, that I felt like this
won’t end. Was for you. "

I loved you... but now... I doubt my love.

"And I taste, what I could never have.
It’s from you."

I wanted you, but you'd never have me.

"All those times, that I tried,
My intentions, full of pride
And I waste, more time than anyone "

Everything I did was in vain... I couldn't have you, I shouldn't have tried.

-Chorus--I won't repeat the meanings… too repetitive

"All the times, that I’ve cried
All that’s wasted, it’s all inside "

I've given up and I've forgotten. I don't need you any longer... the time that I've wasted on you still hurts and I still have feelings for you... but I don't care. Because I have convinced myself I don't love you.

"And I feel, all this pain
Stuffed it down, it’s back again "

Though I doubt my decisions...

"And I lie, here in bed
All alone, I can’t mend "

And I still hold sorrow... wishing we could be together.

"And I feel,
Tomorrow will be okay
But I know.."

And these last little lines imply that everything will work out in the end… no matter what... everything must work out in the end. Almost an implication that he means: “Even if it’s not with you.”

---

In essence, this song is sung through a male's point of view of a female. This female is seen as attractive and 'loved by all' and she would be the type that could 'have anyone she wants.' But the male has realized it is all a lie... she is heartless and cruel on the inside. And because she cannot return his love... or return genuine love... he has left her forever; whether or not it was the best choice. But every day of his life, he still mourns his decision. He still mourns his loss.
