| Neil Diamond – Solitary Man Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Im pretty sure that JC covered this song from Neil, purely on the basis that his version is on American Man III - which is a cover album. Hes done such great, and some unexpected, covers as U2's "One", NIN's "Hurt", Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" and Depeche mode's "Personal Jesus". All great covers, with One being better than the original, and Hurt as well - mainly on the basis that I prefer JC, but also because it seems more relevant with this voice singing it. | |

For some reason this song took so long for me to think about lyricly, which is a shame. I must have heard it about 15 times before considering the lyrics, then I realised he said 'womb' at the start and really listened. Awesome song. Whenever I hear it I get the image in my head of a lil Jimi in a womb, with a mini fro, and being more level headed and mature than his parents. He seems to be cool with whatever they decide - "I'll be glad to go back to Spirit Land". It's like he's more concerned for his parent's, than his own life being saved, and he just wants to be able to chill out - he doesnt want to go through it all again, as opposed to being scared that he might not live. Really cool song, and one which kinda changes your mind in some ways. Legend. |

To answer the questions of some about the relevance of 420, I did a lil research, since I was unsure myself: A snippet from a website: What does 420 mean? There are varying theories on the origin of 420. Some say that 420 originated from a police code that announces marijuana use is taking place. Yet another story is that a group of guys (Waldo's) in the 1970's made 4:20 their official meeting time to smoke marijuana after school. Whether or not 4:20 p.m. is the best time of day for your first hit depends on your own body, your own needs. Some folks feel that waiting until 4:20 enhances ones appreciation of the herb. Of course, your mileage may vary. April 20th (4/20) is another usage, meaning that it is time for to plant before the summer. Hopefully that clears things up. Additionally, many times have we seen the debate as to the extent of drug references of a Dylan song, and frankly its just irrelevant. The music's good, the lyrics rock, and whether you're into the harmonica and monotonous voice (not my words) or not, you gotta respect him, if not for his talent then for his forceful introduction of real poetry into rock. For instance the final verse of Mr Tambourine man is so unbeleivably tranquil and poetic I get a chill whever I hear it. The drug references in this song seem too obvious to be the focal point..and they are, as many people have noticed. The special thing with Dylan's music is its double or triple meanings - a characteristic seen in all great works of poets and lyricists for many years - eg. Shakespeare. Now Im not directly comparing Bob with Bill, but they do show remnants of similar punning techniques. |
