The Decemberists – Los Angeles, I'm Yours Lyrics 17 years ago
Lord have mercy, this is one of the reason I don't like the Decemberists new fan-base, some of you understand the song, and props to you guys, but you pseudo-hipsters, are digging irony out of places where it doesn't exist. This song is purely a love song about Los Angeles. If there is one thing you have to catch from Decemberists songs, it's their love for the noire. They appreciate the down-trodden, seemingly evil refuge for the lower-ends of society. Colin is singing about the beautiful disaster the city is, how he sees the most amazing and awe-inspiring decay of the norms of society, yet the root of the society(human interaction) is stronger then any other city in the world. He's saying that Los Angeles doesn't have any of the superficial norms society thinks it has, and instead, has things that mainstream society sees as repulsive, like drugs, hookers, pollution, huge class-divide, etc. Yet, the people are happy to live in their filth, and appreciate all the real things the society has to offer, that other cities, which maybe look for beautiful, and do not have these "social no-nos" ever will. I think Colin wrote this song, and if he did, he is talking about how much he loves Los Angeles, how it brings him to his knees, and how much beauty, most don't realize this wretched society actually has, to those who keep their eyes open.

David Bowie – Life on Mars? Lyrics 20 years ago
I think your all reading too much into this, as the old saying goes "sometimes things are exzactly as they seem" This song is about the destruction of our society and how everything and everyone is become so materialistic (in a very loose sense of the word) and unspiritual(also very loose sense of word) "sailors fighting in the dance hall, look at those cavemen go" people are become uncivilized and are more like cavemen "mickey mouse has grown up a cow" all innosence has been destroyed and the world is become horrible. "lawmen beating on the wrong guy" people are attacking innocent people but do not care because of the human races growing thirst for ruin. "wonder if he'll ever know, he's in the best selling show" the world has become so destructive and carnivous it is practically a show, DB wonders if the "lawman" will ever know that he is part of this horrible show destroying the spirit of the human race. "lived in 10 times or more" see's this type of stuff all the time. "is there life on mars?" I look at this a few ways. #1. He wonders if there is live on mars because if there is then they must be watching in shock at us(the show)(fits perfect with all the "show" references early in the song) #2. If there is life on mars DB wants to know if they are living to same way we are sinec scientists and such look at mars as Earth closest similiar planet. #3. Is there life on mars becaus DB is sick of earth and wants to go there. Well thats all i got.
