Molasses is a dark, bitter treacle substance; a by product of Cane Sugar production. I think this song is about the bitter resentment of the sweetening of all the terrible things which aren't being faced up to.
"Shake hands, genocide, molasses" is about the discussions, agreements and appeasements made with people like Hitler and Milosevic.
"Jet powered caravans" about the environmental state of the world, one of Thoms favourite subjects.
Basically goes on to mention other things about the state of the world today and the bitterness which is being felt by all the spin and disguising of all the mess in the world.

This song was written around the 1997 election and it may just be me but most of the things they seem to mention (voodo economics, riot shields ect.) became associated with the losing Tory Party. I think it was showing the total lack of trust of Tory politicians during that election. |

The entire album was about that. It might just be me, but the album seems to go through the stages of grief you go through. With denial (Just the Way I'm feeling?) determination not to let this stop you (Come Back around) Sadness, tears, searching for comfort, trying to forget, anger, and acceptance. They're all stages which I went through, and although I could be wrong, it gives that impression to me. |
