Camper Van Beethoven – Take The Skinheads Bowling Lyrics 13 years ago
Right, well do you think Michael Moore used it in Bowling for Columbine because he wanted to remove people's heads and use them for bowling? Or maybe, do you think the song is about taking aggressive people and giving them something to do -- something innocent and absurd rather than harmful and serious.

"i had a dream, it was about nothing"

... they wrote a song, it was about nothing. Actually, I don't believe that. But I do believe the song was written with many different interpretations in mind and a healthy dose of ambiguity because that's how Camper Van rolls. Then again, what does it mean for a song to be about something? Sigh. Camper Van, you make me think.

Limp Wrist – Just Like You Lyrics 13 years ago
Alright, it's definitely about people trying to ingratiate themselves to homophobes by denying that they're "colorful" ... by saying things and recanting because it would be judged as homosexual ("i am on my knees
Oh no! not on my knees!"). It doesn't even have to be a gay person, it could be a straight person worried about not pleasing a homophobic culture. But still, I don't understand the last part in that context.

"Detain us, Contain us, You have a right to hate us. Detain us, Sedate us, Would you please fucking hate us"

I guess it's a plea for open and honest hate rather than below the surface, displeased, homophobia. ... a type of homophobia which is ultimately more destructive because the homophobe is in denial and hasn't actually confronted what's bothering them.

Still, I want someone else's perspective on this. It's ok to hate my interpretation, just give me something to go on. (Get it?)

Limp Wrist – Just Like You Lyrics 13 years ago
I've always loved this song. But I don't know what it means, really.

I used to think it was a response to wealthy gay men who seek approval in mainstream culture. But there's too much in the song about repressing homosexuality and wealthy gay men don't really repress their homosexuality because they're more accepted in urban areas, or whatever or something.

So, my best guess is that we're talking about all-embracing christians who "love" everyone. And basically the song is about christians or "progressives" repressing their hate for gays in favor of "loving" them and trying to "reform" them or work them into a puritanical worldview that avoids talking about sex (AKA gay sex which still makes them uncomfortable in spite of being all "love is love, man"). It's easier if they just admit they hate gays. "Detain us, Contain us, You have a right to hate us ... Would you please fucking hate us." Just give us that opposition, it's easier to deal with than your repressed feelings of hate, right?

Then again, it could be a gay person who struggles with being homosexual because they think it's "not normal." But that interpretation is boring. That's a callous thing to say, but Limp Wrist is way more interesting than that after-school special theme.

Braid – What A Wonderful Puddle Lyrics 18 years ago
i just always thought it was about being younger and learning that friends come and go. kids play in puddles when it rains. right? i mean, not every song has to be about relationships.

Also, I just love that the obscurity of the song works for the story...this really traumatic thing is happening and he wants to avoid the feeling so he'll never forget the pebbles pushing up into his knees which is some peipheral sensation that is insignificant but will always be associated with being raped...also the lyric "i didn't like it, i was excited by it"

Black Eyes – A Pack of Wolves Lyrics 20 years ago
I mean, I think you're right in a way. But Black Eyes is really big on confronting serious issues head on...this is more about rape than a general tendency...like the section quoting A Father's Song by Komunyakaa (I can't spell his name worth shit but I think he's cited on the lyrics sheet) that whole poem is about a father warning his daughter against other men and then raping her. This song is definitely about the primal nature of men protecting their own sisters and mothers but being aggressive to the point of rape (pack of wolves) towards other women, but it's also very critical of this sort of frat boy mentality..."when you said 'show me your tits' we were wishing you died..."...that's what I think

So this song couldn't be more clearly about pedophilia. But more importantly, I don't know how you got the verses wrong except that you don't own the album because the lyrics are in every LP and CD of this album, so sweet job stealing a Dischord CD...it would have cost you...$10? Come on.

Animal Collective – Kids on Holiday Lyrics 21 years ago
it's "while he's eyeing your stockings, he's got books to help you with your life..."

and it's definitely NOT "And there’s fat nuns and tenors"
