| Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
It's a pretty psychedelic idea, but I think this song is about sex. More specifically, using it as an escape from the outside wolrd (another theme Cornell explores later). Think about it "Boiling heat, summer stench, neath the black, the sky looks dead call my name through the cream and i'll hear you scream again." Soundgarden always had a reputation for being clever with their lyrics, and they might be laughing their way to the bank with this one----in a very good way, of course. Further proof comes with "Stuttering, cold and damp" referring the a post-sex state "Steal the warm wind, tired friend" And when he says "times are gone for honest men and sometimes, far too long for snake" We get the sense that he doesn't want to leave and after that he describes that in his shoes there's just "walking sleep," meaning getting dressed means the banality of life once again And of course, he describes the holiest of holies as a "black hole sun," which might sounds apocalyptic, but that could be him toying with listener expectations, too. again, cornell gets pretty clever. Awesome song---sad, psychedelic, and pretty funny if you think about it. Just my two cents |

| Pearl Jam – Glorified G Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I can see that point of view gina marz, though mine differed in thinking of the pearl jam keeping things pretty scathing and satirical. I thought it'd be this guy who feels manly in just having a gun to stun his adversary. But then he checks his pulse and finds he's still alive and keeps repeating, i can feel your in your neck! as a primal complaint. The glorified pellet gun is a placebo for the real thing, the major difference being one kills while the other stuns but drives the singer to choke the life out of this guy until he's truly performed the action which makes him a man. | |
| Gorillaz – Kids With Guns Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I think the song applies the U.S. Govt. as something completely powerhungry in that it will tell you what it wants to do in terms of what's morally just and it tells you things it doesn't want you to do. for example, easy does it, easy does it, might just signify the way in which kids assuming too much power with the artillery daddy gave to them might see violence in a good and domineering light so let's "give them something to say no to" like drugs or violence in particular. In other words trying to control its soldiers of destruction, and by telling us not do do such things, this of all things inspires American youth do commit what's become their desire, which is how America came to play and how the govt came into play and how bush seems to weild his power. Easy does it indeed, the kids could be takig over more than they (the collective mind of the president and his society) bargained for. | |
| Portishead – Only You Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| This emotion she's getting at is an allusion not only to a relationship, but to a country's promise, or the love she's found within that country. Although everything's failed, amazingly enough, what other choice has she except the place she's married to, or in her place whereing she's married to, or her man. Awesome how her heart can be turned like a tree rooting her in place that only the actual grounds that she's planted in decide her position despite what frustrations she may have had to overcome or to not overcome. | |
| The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I'm Gonna fight em off A seven nation army couldn't hold me back- -He's going to fight off the demons that have been talking about him of which in this case could consist of seven nations which he cleverly figured in after thinking of the aftermentioned Salvation Army. They're going to rip it off Taking their time right behind my back -almost but not quite sure, that these demons (media demons most likely) are ripping pages and pages from his story and changing things when he isn't looking. When he talks at night to himself he can't forget what they said, smoking a cigarette to buzz down his mind which is starting to become what they are making him out to be. The cool part here is that we leave his mind and see it from the subjective point of the viewer when he tells them as you are looking through the window of his mind "and the message coming from my eyes says leave it alone" which he could be saying to himself or he could be saying to the person looking at him. Either way, it's a letter found in a bottle. In avoiding what they've said about him, he explains why in the next verse since "every single one (storyteller)'s got a story to tell. Everyone knows about it which dampens some mystery which Jack White is very much in love with. -Apparently after this he threatens to sell his soul to the demons or either that sell his side of the story which he may just be doing as he's singing the song. Although it's not what people want he feels he may need it for himself because he's gotta mind his own soul or bones. As such he wishes to seek refuge in "where?" exactly, far from the story which will end badly as any opera would. And from there he'll sell his case to God about the demons from what's been hiding inside as blood and words which will end in the song dying out before he leaves witht he last warning that such stains are telling him to leave this affair and start at the beginning. Gossip is definitely 3000 percent right. |

| The Flaming Lips – Talkin' 'Bout the Smiling Deathporn Immortality Blues (Everyone Wants to Live Forever) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| But isn't more than that somewhat, somehow. He's hypothesizing the effects of one who lives forever and how someone would become so sick of life like it's a disease that becomes life and he relates it (as an acid-man like wayne would) to dry heaving. But forever, is immaculate and terrifyingly infinite, which means we all desire what cannot be comprehended or within our grasp...like the tree of knowledge that's forbidden or something to that effect maybe? Seeing as how forever is more than what a brain can comprehend, it would be more than anyone could handle. Yet we still want it, because being alive is something sacred. IF it it wasn't, then would it hold those same sacred qualities? that makes the flaming lips say "whoa" | |
| Screaming Trees – All I Know Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| oh man, this is summer dispair. Drenched with 60's carefree acid and happiness despite the cynical lyrics. Running away indeed, it's what the generation is about which kinda makes me question the intentions in the first place. Metaphors suggest strong violence and a strong tendancy towards the violence nay more like an appetite for the pain! Biting on the thorn...lines that make me questy, especially considering the actual instrumental content being so uplifting. The 2nd layer is masochistic, persuaded by a kiss i already know is full of deceit, but i love it anyway. A guilty pleasure of a message, but PURE gem of a song. Lanegan Lives! | |
