Camille – Jolie Bruine Lyrics 16 years ago
I hope I can correct the translation without making any faults of my own and without offending...

i am a cactus
on the dry earth
and ungrateful spines
break through my brown skin

i am a cactus
no one looks at me
no one lingers
not even the bards (poets)

but look at the
pretty showers
pretty showers
so clear, so blue, so fine
you alone will see
the ruby flowers
that i open under your fingers

i am a cactus
and you know the rest

The Beautiful South – A Little Time Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't think this is at all about him cheating. Speaking as a man, I'd say it's perfectly normal and natural for guys to just want to chill out separately from their wives/girlfriends/whatever, just to sort things out and solve their problems by themselves. However, I've also noticed that there are a lot of girls who don't understand/recognise this need. Hence they get jumpy and start flipping out "oh my god, he's having an affair, he's sleeping around, he no longer loves me, etc". I think this song is just about that lack of communication in the relationship. Because women in general will prefer to talk about their problems, it doesn't make sense that a guy would want to shut himself away and resolve them by himself.

In the end, he's taken his time, he's thought things through, he's resolved his problems, he tells her he still loves her, but it's too late. He's tried to say that he just needs a little time, but she's jumped to possibly the wrong conclusions and slept around (had a little fun) and realised that she no longer loves him.

So I disagree with blu_girl_4eva and sakura. The lines "had a little space for a thousand beds", "you had a little fun" and "when you had yours, do you think I had none?" are all spoken by her. I'm not saying it's certain that he's not been cheating, he might have been, but nowhere is it anything but her opinions of what's been going on.

Camille – Au Port Lyrics 17 years ago
Actually, I think I've changed my mind. I think she's singing to herself(je suis toi-même et je te parle). At the beginning, she's saying stop running after these guys, then at the end she's telling herself that she's grown up now and should leave the nest. Then she hops on a tour bus and takes a trip round paris...

Camille – Au Port Lyrics 17 years ago
I've also given this a stab at translation and present my result below (I'm English, so I'm not sure I've properly understood the meaning in parts)

Oh little girl, you drink the water and you're drunk
There where you drown, you struggle to catch your feet, you sink
At port

Hey you crazy girl, it's not breaststroke it's crawl
For the crossing, you're gonna need a lift (help)
From the military (?)

But him, he's different, he was born on the sea
He's a big captain, a monumental lover
You're lost inside

Hey little girl! We never have to leave
There's always one to drop the other, to become weak (what?)
At port

Hey little fool (also vase/jug), with your pots of jam (US jelly)
You will go wild, but not on adventure
to the north

But him, he's different, he was born on Mont Blanc
He's a big climber, a monumental lover
You've lost his path

Hey little nun! Follow him to the end of the world but if you find him
Don't bring him to the cardinal so that he unlocks him to you
again

Hey little grub, I am you and I speak to you
You're already big, so get up, leave your hiding place/hold
At port

Your little girl's heart is dead

Hey little girl, on your right, the arc de triomphe
Hey little girl, on your left a snoring god
Hey little girl, in front there's the pyramids
Hey little girl, behind you, the genius of the Bastille.

And my interpretation is that it's about a girl who's not born for travel and each time she wades into the sea she drowns, each time she climbs mountains she loses her way. But she keeps falling for guys who are travellers and she tries to keep up, but she gets lost. I think the singer might be a guy/her mother/a friend, saying "Don't run after them, you're fine with me". I'm not all that sure though.

Then at the end, it's like they're on a tour bus round Paris (Camille's home city), and the singer is showing her the beauties of her home town, saying they never have to leave. It's sadly cute. It also reminds me of her song "Paris", where she tries to leave and live elsewhere but keeps coming home to Paris, despite it having bits she doesn't like.

Counting Crows – Margery Lyrics 18 years ago
I get this feeling that the song is about a childhood love... Margery.
"The alleys of a childhood
Will not release us willingly"

He still has feelings for her. Or always has. And I think he takes the train back to Kentucky where she lives and finds her about to get married or engaged or something and it's like she's rammed a knife through his heart.

Then I think the part about Anna is perhaps to do with a similar thing that happens with Anna. Though I think Anna was more about how she was cheating on her fiancé with him, so there was never much hope (my interpretation). I think he finds himself in love with these people and then, probably because he's always away on tour and such, they find somebody else who's more stable.

I think this song is kinda... self pitying in a way. Like "Oh, I never get the girl... boo hoo". But I still like it all the same.

Thom Yorke – The Clock Lyrics 19 years ago
I thought this song was about Nuclear Annihilation and the "Doomsday Clock". The doomsday clock is a device used to illustrate the threat of nuclear arms and other things of destroying the human race/causing major upset. The arms are moved closer to the hour to illustrate greater threat and moved further from the hour to show lower threat.

Just recently it was altered so that Global Warming and the environment was included. That was after the release of The Eraser though so I think it's about nuclear threats and the Iraq war and how politicians throw money at the problem and "make a wish" that it sorts itself out.

I love this song. So true. I love the whole album, it makes me shudder. I wanna play it full blast to the world and see the effect it has, which according to the lyrics of other songs, would be negligable. Such a pity. Start doing something about it!

Placebo – Burger Queen (Francais) Lyrics 20 years ago
Well, I don't see how they could have translated it badly. They speak french too. Being from Luxembourg, I'm guessing English is their third language, so they probably get their meaning across better in French. Personally, I thought it was a pretty good translation... Just my thoughts though.

The Cure – Killing an Arab Lyrics 20 years ago
Well, although many people would attribute an existentialist nature to Camus' work, Camus himself disagreed. Quite what the difference between absurdism and existentialism is, is beyond me, but Camus made the distinction. I would say that Meursault wasn't aware of absurdism, but is merely a vessel through which Camus explores absurdism. That is, that we can come to one of two conclusions. a) There's a God/Religion, so life has purpose or b) There is no God/Religion, thus no purpose. Camus claims that God/Religion are human conceptions, created to lend meaning to existance. So we are then left with another two options. Suicide or pointless existance. This is explored in another of Camus' books "The Myth of Sisyphus" (Le Mythe de Sisyphe), in which he discusses the meaningless existance.

The Myth of Sisyphus tells the story of Sisyphus, a man condemned by the Gods to spend his lifetime pushing a rock up a hill only to let it roll down so that he can roll it back up the hill once more. Camus accepts that this appears on the surface to be quite a depressing outlook, but later concludes that we should imagine sysiphus a happy man. He has something to work towards. An ultimate goal.

I'm not sure that I completely understand all this stuff, in fact, I'm fairly sure that I don't as the concepts are quite difficult to comprehend. Perhaps you should use what I've said as an introduction to Camus and something to inspire further study. I have to study him anyway as a byproduct of my french coursework, but I'd still find it interesting non the less.

In effect, the only need for meursault to kill the man in the first place is so that later on meursault will be condemmed to death. This allows us to glimpse into his psyche and perceive that he would rather not die and actually quite enjoys life. He can be paralleled in this instance to Sysiphus as he walks down the hill. He's in a comtemplative mood, whereby he sees the effort and pain that is to come, but is able to relax at present and reflect on the life he's had so far.

All is well.

Bright Eyes – Poison Oak Lyrics 20 years ago
Reading back on what everyone's written, I'd have to say I agree that it's about his brother. Yes, he is talking about himself when he says "my clothes are soaking wet from your brothers tears." I don't think it's too complicated to see that either. There's no need to wonder about what perspective it's being said in. It all made far more sense when about his brother. His brother doesn't commit suicide, he runs off to Mexico... He never once mentions suicide, I think you're all a little obsessed with death and sadness. This song to me was about running away, getting free, living life. He felt almost trapped with his parents, not that they were particularly stringent, just that everyone feels like they need to get away at times. I ran away just before my GCSEs. Just because I needed some time to myself. It was so lonely, yet exhiliarating all at once. The yellow bird being a canary was an idea I liked too. His brother ran away and made it ok, which was what conor was waiting for before he felt he could leave home and get away, someone else to illustrate that the way was safe.

I don't know if his brother was gay, but I think it's likely. I liked the serpant's tongue idea. He himself said some things that he shouldn't have said. He was one of the factors perhaps for making him run away. I think his whole family and parents disliked the idea. Not that they loved him less, just that he felt awkward, needed some time to gather his thoughts and feelings, so he runs off to Mexico.

Muse – Citizen Erased Lyrics 20 years ago
I just got this album a couple of days ago and I thought this song was about a mental institute. "Please stop asking me to describe".
I think he's been sent there because he's done something utterly horrifying and he just can't come to realise it and he's going crazy.
Either that or somehow, in the future, people will be thought insane if they try to concieve a world of peace, justice and righteousness. I did like emokid's description though. Very profound
