Joy Division – The Sound Of Music Lyrics 20 years ago
I always thought it was funny that someone like Ian Curtis (knowing what later became of him) could write a song where the chorus is "love of life makes you feel higher." Then again, in the line before he says "I can't see life getting higher" which makes me think he has no more love for life. Hmm.

I must say that

I'll walk you through the heartbreaks
Show you all the out-takes
I can't see it getting higher
Systematically degraded
Emotionally a scapegoat
I can't see it getting better

is one of the most poetic expressions of angst ever committed to record.

New Order – Regret Lyrics 20 years ago
This is probably my favorite song of all time. I'm of two minds about this song. On one hand it's about a guy who's screwing up his life and is tired of his girlfriend lecturing him and in turn, his girlfirend is tired too and is leaving him. So the song is a bitter tirade about how the main character doesn't actually need people but rather just shelter and a telephone and he'll be fine and how you can keep telling yourself that things will improve but they never will and it will just make you crazy and fill you with false hope. Just accept what you've got and move along.

My other mind says that it's about a guy who WAS messed up but met this amazing person who helped him get back on track starting small (a place to call his own, etc..). Though this person may have lost all his old friends and everything he used to have it really dosn't matter because he has this great person and life can surely only get better from here. The last line is a throwback to his old friends who were also messed up but keep saying they'll get better but they never will. I like this interpretation better.

New Order – Here To Stay Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it's about Ian Curtis. How he wanted to be famous yet failed to achieve it himself. However, New Order DID achieve that fame and in a way kept Ian's dream (and his name and work) alive by doing so. Though they're tired of being overshadowed by his presence they realized that the music was just too good to waste time fighting and bickering with each other (the group broke up from 1993-1998) about and remembered how good it felt to play when they were young and just having a good time. Ian's ghost isn't a weight they have to bear, it's a blessing. So with that in mind New Order are "here to stay." Great track.

New Order – Disorder Lyrics 20 years ago
Probably my favorite Joy Division song. The guitar on the version of 'Still' never fails to make my hair stand on end. I think this song is Ian's most autobiographical one. His feelings of boredom, inadiquacy and fears of being trapped with a wife and child at such a young age have made him emotionally numb. He longs for something to shake him out of it and eventually , as fellow JD geeks know, took up with a mistress. But that failed to help him and in fact, only made things worse. Coupled with his epilepsy ("lights are flashing") his life has spiraled out of control and he's confused and has no idea what to do until "the new sensation takes ahold." Sadly, it pushed him in to taking his own life as an answer to his problems.

New Order – Way of Life Lyrics 20 years ago
I always thought this song was about a guy who's girlfriend used to be a lesbian (or experiment or whatever) and when she tells him he can't deal with it and goes off the handle thinking that she's probably still seeing girls behind his back even though all her friends say that she's faithful ("I can't find anyone to doubt it"). The girl loves him but the guy just can't get past it. Very "Chasing Amy" in my opinion.

New Order – The Perfect Kiss Lyrics 20 years ago
This song was a big dance number in the 80's and if I recall it's about the unspoken AIDS epidemic that was big in the gay community at the time. It was also rumoured to be about the violence in Manchester and at the Hacienda at the time. Basically, people who don't take precautions, do crazy things in search of the ultimate high and ironically achieve it (through death).
