| The Offspring – Blackball Lyrics | 20 years ago |
To blackball means (along with it's original use) " To shut out from social or commercial participation; ostracize or boycott" It's derived from the freemason's voting rituals. This song is about how the "powers that be" tend to exclude (blackball) things in society they don't like and that it often seems like the only way to advance in the world is to give in and start blackballing other people yourself. The song is about a person that is looking back on his life and realizing that he himself got caught up in the game of life and did things that he regrets, but he most regrets allowing himself to not do things because the mainstream told him not to. It's about disillusionment with a system that is keeping people down and destroying society. This not a reference to drugs. |

| The Offspring – A Thousand Days Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Because an album has commercial success doesn't mean it's pop music. In this day and age, there's a very not-so-fine line between an album being popular and being pop music. This song has definite anti-war overtones (as do several songs on The Offspring's self-titled album) but it goes further than that. It's questioning why leaders feel the need to let pride get in the way of rational judgement sparking conflicts that don't need to be started. The part that seems to hint at it being about love in a traditional sense represents love and peace in the world and our inability to reach it. A very good song |
