| Bright Eyes – A Line Allows Progress, a Circle Does Not Lyrics

As someone mentioned the half empty glass being about his life. That leads to a natural double entendre where he finishes his drink because he has nothing better to do, and finishes his life because the feelings of worthlessness due to his depression always used to pass, but never do anymore.
I still think the song is more about depression than a particular addiction. |

"It's time that I accept that fact that you on your back is burying the past" cuts through me like a knife. That is such a brilliant way of saying I know you're sleeping with someone else as a way of getting me out of your mind. |

About a year ago, I had just been dumped from a two year relationship and I was kind of numb and did not ever express any sorrow over it. A month after the break-up, I was hanging out with old friends that I didn't spend as much time with when I was in the relationship. These friends used to love drinking and singing Format songs, and one of them told me I should listen to the new album again. I'd heard it once through and I remembered liking the song with the clarinets. I didn't remember the name, and started to look for it. I found the video on their myspace page and started listening. When I heard the "words, like girls, get bored and run..." line, I started sobbing uncontrollably. I could do nothing but listen to it on repeat for 3 hours sobbing my eyes out.
Now that my personal experience is out of there, I do feel that the Becca thing is more than a concidence, and that he wrote this song to help relieve some pain from his past, and in doing so helped many fans to do just the same. |

To me, this is probably the saddest Bright Eyes song. Being burned so badly in love that you vow to never get close enough to someone again that you could get hurt, just is heartbreaking. And the feeling I get from the song is not that this is a kneejerk reaction to a heartbreak like a "I'll never love again" type of a feeling, but deeper than that. It almost seems as though the narrator knows that he's not allowing anyone new into his life, but not out of choice, but complete inability. This experience was so traumatic that there are walls around his heart. If he feels them start to be broken down, he kicks the woman that breaks them down out of his life. |

I don't know if any other song could be so powerful with such few lyrics. The music itself is perfect to convey every emotion of the human condition. |

for some strange reason this song and "Thru the Eyes of Ruby" by the Smashing Pumpkins always remind me of one another. I think the epic feel has a lot to do with it. I also think the other person in the song is someone with whom it would be very socially unacceptable to hook up. I see it as the speaker is falling for his girlfriend's friend. I think they might have already acted on it, but know that it should never happen again, and he's sorry to both of them that it did happen. "The end" he doesn't want to give up is what happens next. He might feel alone in his current relationship, and is waiting for the right time to break things off, but knows he'll hurt his g/f. The chorus could possibly be the friend and the speaker having a conversation. |

Another example of Darryl using Zappa lines ("I see the smoke and fire
And the market burning down" from "Trouble Every Day")
I love that he slides them in there in both bands, like little secrets waiting to be discovered |

the meaning was pretty well hit upon by everyone else, IMO. I've had "3 more hit songs..." for a while now, but just two days ago, I was listening to all my bright eyes stuff on shuffle, and this came up while I was eating lunch and I just couldn't continue...I guess I never really ingested the song before, but it hit me suddenly. Most bright eyes songs take a while for the meaning to fully come to me, but it's not usually so strong |

This is probably my favorite Bright Eyes song, and they're my second favorite band, so I have to throw my 2 cents in.
The speaker of the songs suffers from extreme depression. The fact that he no longer receives pleasure from many things he used to is one of the hallmarks of depression. The use of drugs is not due to addiction, because addiction is very specific, but the speaker will "settle for anything that will make his brain stop" obviously not caring what it is. The speaker also loses weight, and dramatic weight change can be another sign of depression.
In the depths of a depressive episode you feel restless, yet exhausted. You can't sleep, but your self-depricating thoughts are racing, which is where the need for self medication comes in, to make those thoughts stop.
The line "break this cirlce of thoughts you chase" refers to the title. Depression feeds on itself due to a pattern of self-depricating thoughts which lead to feelings of being unwanted by others, which leads to social awkwardness, which leads to a lack of social support from others, which leads back to more self-depricating thoughts. This circle continues to play out until the depressive episode has ended. This is the circle that does not allow progress. The line being referred to in the title is one where the cycle of depression is not enacted.
The camera around his neck refers to his hazy memories of when he used to be happy, but even though he has them, when you're depressed you don't remember those times, you feel as if you've alwsy been unhappy, at least any time that still feels recent. |
