| Mae – Sic Semper Tyrannis Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
it's the viriginia motto, it means death to the tyrants. it's a metaphorical situation where there are a bunch of people on a boat that is sinking, the singer knows that boat's going down but they don't. It's their fault that the boat is sinking and the song is challenging people to take a stand instead of being tossed around and drowning. |

I heard it was for his brother too, anyways about the lyrics - I just caught onto this a while ago but I don't think "when they say you're nothing" is a complete sentence... I don't know if I'm explaining this well, but I think it's like "Just stop pretending ... when they say you're nothing, are you sad?" vocally he seperates the two but the lyrics still fit into a kind of run on sentence |

| Our Lady Peace – Superman's Dead Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| "It's just about how hard it is for kids to grow up today. They're inundated with the media and images and cliques they try to have to fit into. Two images that are really strong for me lyrically are ordinary's just not good enough today,' and when I think of kids today, I would never think of a group of eight year olds going out to a baseball park and throwing the ball around. It doesn't happen any more. I have a nine year old brother; he's either inside playing Nintendo or staying up late on a school night watching Beavis & Butt-Head. And you juxtapose that against the old Superman, on the black and white series. He was a real hero, good values, strong willed, a gentleman, but I think Beavis & Butt-Head wins today." - Raine Maida | |

| Raine Maida – One Second Chance Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| i think "McClellan" is a mispronunciation of McCluhan (sorry if that's spelled wrong). He has talked before about how he studied Marshall McCluhan at U of T, and in other songs he mentions "The medium is the message" which is McCluhan's famous line. I am pretty sure he refers to the guy as McClellan though. | |
| Our Lady Peace – Naveed Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| The Birdman wasn't written about a childhood friend (as far as all quotes by Raine have explained). Naveed was a friend of Raine's, however he spells his name Navid. Same pronunciation, but Naveed is a more straight forward spelling for the album/ song. | |
| Green Day – Give Me Novacaine Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| actually, I just noticed in the lyric book that there's syringes (needles) beside the word "Novacaine"... that makes me think even more that it is about an anesthetic for the mind (drugs) since Novocaine is an injectable anesthetic and it's commonly mispelled Novacaine. | |
| Green Day – Give Me Novacaine Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I don't know if this is coincidental but Novocaine is an anesthetic, and think about it... anesthetics take away the sensation in something, so I think Novacaine is symbolic of drugs in general taking away the "sensation inside" like an anesthetic for the mind | |

I definitely agree with the comments that this song is about his distant relationship with his father. His parents were divorced, and his father was kind of an outsider trying to discipline him when raine just wanted him to be there for him. We had this huge discussion about Kerouac's book (On the road) in a writing class I'm taking and I understand that whole verse now I think. On the Road was written almost entirely in stream of consciousness, just kind of random thoughts that mean somethings as a whole. On the road and in my head I need relevance, intelligence A new tattoo a lot more sex Broken families A new enemy And you will not make up for this see they start off kind of random thoughs/things he wants and he ties them all together at the end, back to the purpose... "It's all for you" (his father) |

| Our Lady Peace – Angels/Losing/Sleep Lyrics | 20 years ago |

On some TV thing talking about the making of the video, Raine explained the song. (not a direct quote though) It's about seeing someone close to you have their own faith fall apart. Like realizing there's loopholes in the faith they've clung to, whatever that may be. It's about watching, and just being able to wait for them to be okay again. and seeing the pain of their spirituality and faith being being broken down. "heaven fall into hell" (spirituallity falling apart). "looks like the war was in your head" (the conflict was not being able to logically figure religion out, it wasn't that you wanted in your heart to lose faith) basically the whole song revolves around witnessing someone close to you make the terrible realisation about their religion not being as solid as they though it was, and losing faith. |

flyingdaitchman you are very off! I don't know where the exact quotes are but Jeremy explains the line "the worlds a subway" by saying get on or get off, the world moves fast with or without you. and Raine has said several times about the overall meaning... the song was written about how he was visiting with his 9 year old brother Adam, and he's inside all day playing video games staying up late on school nights watching Beavus & Butthead and Raine's was just commenting on how traditioinal childhood has changed, Superman as a childhood hero is dead. "we'll just laugh instead" refers to changing from good heros like superman to being shallowly entertained by shows like Beavus & butthead |

| Our Lady Peace – Where Are You? Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
the song is about finding spirituality outside of traditional religions and Raine's perception that they all lead to the same place he is searching for. "I've been dreaming, of a place where I won't run, kicking and screaming, and punching at everyone. And I've been dreaming of a world that's just begun, where the fires aren't burning and the colours bleed into one, and this could be the best day of your life" This is a studio version of the chorus when the song was in progress and Bob Rock hadn't dumbed it down 100x (to only saying 'where are you'). a bit of proof bob rock has commercialized and ruined OLP... this is what the song used to be... metaphorical and meaninging OLP style, but Rock has wrecked it to a radio hit that the world will out grow in 2 months |

| Our Lady Peace – Clumsy Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| i heard that on the info video for this , it said when Raine was really little his sister fell in a pool and she was drowning (she died), but he was so young, he just waved, because he couldnt understand. it fits in with the whole idea of "letting in"" because he doesnt know whats happening, and needs to be let in, because this is a serious problem. Oh, and to the person who said the thing about the trapeze couple, theres a quote of Raine saying that that is the story behind the song Trapeze. | |
