I don't know how many of you are WWE fans, but I associate this song with how I feel about Chris Benoit.

However, despite it's incorrect title, this one has the correct lyrics... or at least decently typed ones

The Sisters of Mercy – Ribbons Lyrics 19 years ago
I've always interpreted this song to be about resting in your bed and wanting to be in a relationship with someone who's afraid to get into one right then because of the pain involved.

The first two lines are talking about lying in bed and looking at the glowinthedark stars people put on their ceiling.

"We are few and far between" is the narrator saying that not many people have a connection like the narrator and the person to whom he's talking.

The next lines are a play on "Love is a many splendoured thing." The narrator isn't BSing, he's telling her that love involves a lot of pain. But that she shouldn't be afraid and should start a relationship with him.

"Flowers on the razor wire" is referring to love. The razor wire is referring to the pain of love and flowers to the pleasure.

The next lines about her eyes and the purple light are just one more time he's convincing her to be in a relationship with him. If you've ever been to a camp where they seperate the girls and guys, oftentimes they'll tell you "No making purple" as the rule. It's the same concept, where he's saying "I see no purple light crashing out of you" It means that she's single, so jsut walk on in (to love)

The lovers queued in the hallway and such is saying that there are a lot of people who are interested in her and he's telling her about just random things so that she'll pay attention to him (as guys will do) rather than the lovers scratching at the door.

I've always taken "She looked good in ribbons" to be just a way of saying she was attractive artistically. Along the same lines as "I was thinking about her skin" mentioned earlier in the song and it being a red ribbon as red is the color of love, typically (rose colored glasses, red hearts, etc...)

The Sisters of Mercy – No Time To Cry Lyrics 19 years ago
First verse is basically just saying that the narrator gets frightened sometimes, followed by the chorus that that tells us he doesn't whine/cry about it.

First two lines of the second verse are a play on "don't bite the hand that feeds you." The narrator is saying that in this world you've got to thank the people that help you. So he's making it clear that people need help to get through things in their life, and he's not above that, he just isn't going to let it bring him down for very long and he's not going to cry about it.

The next lines are saying that it isn't hard to understand just like it isn't hard to understand that everything is "always coming down" through gravity and wear and tear, nothing lasts forever or that (in the narrator's opinion) it isn't hard to understand that Jesus never came.

The last two lines of the second verse are talking about the chorus and about how predictable it is that the chorus would return at that point. I mean, "What did you expect to find?"

The last verse just explains that, with time, everything will be alright, and, though sometimes times are painful, the narrator refuses to break down,

Who said anything about the Vatican??

And the Vatican is mos def MAN-made, what's all this crap about Peter being the first pope and the rock upon which Jesus built his church. That's not in the Bible, It's ludicrus.

Yep, premarital sex sure is a *hell* of a lot of fun.

But anyway, the main point of this post is... "What on earth brought up the Vatican??"

Incredible song,

"One day it just snowed I guess
and they closed the roads into your heart
You came home like a dead star
no light left, no loving anymore"

I love that verse.

It's "What could they say" btw.

I like your version better Jenn, but I think the "But rest assured he`ll be on you back, Yeah, the Holy Ghost through his tounges in black" points to it being an anti-religion, and in particular, an anti-Catholic song.

AirCav1stOfThe9th, let's be honest the Catholic church put together the Bible and Martin Luther "bastardized" it by adding the word "alone" to the phrase "but faith can save you" and taking out books, but let's be honest, the point of this site is to talk about the meaning of songs (this one being anti-catholic) and not argue which religion is right.

I think this song has a lot of double meanings.

"Pity that it's not my wife" could refer to premarital sex as well as cheating.

"The seed and the spill
This bitter pill yet undiscovered" I think has a double meaning of "the spill" and "the pill" being two forms of contraception. But the bitter pill could refer to the guilt they'll feel afterwards but haven't felt yet... or, as I think, both.

"Gideon is in the drawer" and "Oh my sweet rapture ...land" probably refer to the hotel room and the pleasure, but in a way it's like he's mocking himself by using the religious references with the pleasure of extramarital sex which I think is one of the things that makes this song so brilliant, he conveys the acceptance of both the pleasure and the guilt so accurately in so few lines.

Just my take on it...
