Aimee Mann – Deathly Lyrics 17 years ago
its clear that its the singer that is the "unhealthy" one, NOT the person she is singing to. she feels her problems are so enormous and her life so hopeless that she doesnt want to bring down this person she has just met and has feelings for.

yes, its true that Paul Thomas Anderson was inspired by Aimee Mann's songs to write "Magnolia". in fact, there is a scene where one of the characters (a drug addict who was sexually molested by her father) asks the cop she is falling for, played by John C. Reilly, the exact line: "Now that I've met you, would you object to never seeing each other again?"

Bright Eyes – From a Balance Beam Lyrics 20 years ago
The first verse of thes song is also an allusion to suicide, albeit the contemplation of it, by jumping off a building. On top of the roof looking down at the gathering crowd, news cameras, and a man with a megaphone who is attempting to talk him out of it (thus being a voice of reason, God).

But the narrator\'s suicide isnt even that glamorous, though he wishes it would be. It\'d be nice to have a grand exit in front of crowds of people all holding their breath and some even trying to goad you out of it, but when we get back to reality (the following bridge) its just him, alone, staring at his wrists obviously questioning and second guessing his suicide. Itd be so much easier if the world just ended. No decisions to be made, no need to die alone.
