I think the people talking to about the economic aspect are on the right track. I think this song is about choosing a girl the way you would choose a stock. In buying a stock the following is desirable: getting up early, staying up late (gains), uninteruppted prosperity (no down profit quarters) smooth liquidation, good dividends. "Picking up slack" is cutting out inefficiencies in the business. I think the "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" title means that the stock is "sexy" but most people can't tell because of the long jacket, so the price hasn't bene run up. I think the MG and "Kitty" lines are about how corporations tend to become bland and cannot take chances once they have shareholders, etc.

I think this song is about a girl who just uses people to get what she wants and doesn't care about anyone but herself. The singer is recommending that she take a good look at herself and consider if using people then throwing them away is the best way to go through life and if it's ever going to make her happy.

This song is about a bad relationship breakup and is a response to a "You've changed... you're different... you never used to be like this, etc" comment. It's not that I've changed, it's that I no longer feel the same way about you so I'm obviously going to act differently towards you.
