| This one is one of my favorites. It just makes me think about the past and all the different paths I could have chosen in my life. | |

Okay I read some of the comments here and Victor01 was by far best with BizzyR18's ideas almost convincing me. The clue that gave it away was found on this website: http://cmusicweb.com/modernrock/countingcrows/augustandeverythingafter.shtml The relationship is an extramarital affair and that explains everything. He starts off not being able to admit that he's falling for her emotionally and he just says "I'm not worried" At some point she says: "Oh," she says, "you're changing." Even she feels him getting more attached to her. The whole second verse is actually her talking to him. She says that she's even willing to "change her name" as in marry him should it come to that. His friend always says that he should go all or nothing on this relationship and not be torn between two lovers. He's obviously had other extramarital affairs before as the fifth verse states "I am not worried I've done this sort of thing before" So that friend imploring him to make an exception is basically either telling him to this time actually make the jump to the new lover or to just stop as he's far too over his head this time. The sex between these two is pretty clearly excellent and every time we hear the line "This time when kindness falls like rain" that basically refers to another sexual climax. The line ""These seconds when I'm shaking leave me shuddering for days," she says " is when she lies in orgasm for those seconds she thinks about it for days. Shuddering at not being his wife. He counters with "And I'm not ready for this sort of thing But I'm not going to break and I'm not going to worry about it anymore I'm not going to bend, and I'm not going to break and I'm not going to worry about it anymore" The next portion: "It seems like I should say, "As long as this is love..." But it's not all that easy so maybe I should Snap her up in a butterfly net Pin her down on a photograph album I am not worried I've done this sort of thing before But then I start to think about the consequences " For a second he relents and says he should just get the divorce and stick with his lover, but then he immediately changes his mind and says he should just "Snap her up in a butterfly net Pin her down on a photograph album" Which Is just like someone else said here to consider her a past conquest and move on. He's obviously done it before with ease. Again they climax with "The time when k indness falls like rain" and this time he really feels for Anna and says "It washes me away and Anna begin s to change my mind And eve rytime she sneezes I believe it's love and Oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing" He continues in love with "She's talking in her sleep It's keeping me awake and Anna begins to toss and turn And every word is nonsense but I understand and Oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing" The final verse in my opinion is where he tries to make the excuse to himself that it's all about sex and nothing else. That's what this line is: "Her kindness bangs a gong It's moving me along and Anna begins to fade away" ......OR..... It could be that she stopped having sex with him in hopes of making him commit to her for the sex to continue. Possibly that's what "her kindness bangs a gong" means. Perhaps that "chases him away" and then the last line indicates that he still feels deeply for her and that "he's not ready for this sort of thing." |
