| reptile - but on the other hand, it's about killing music, isn't it? So the concept of killing is at least partly fitting here. But I also don't think that In Absentia is 100% concept. Maybe 50-60% of songs is about murder stuff... | |

I think it's about a guy who has a normal life - family, a good job etc. But he has also his dark side - he likes doing something bad to other, possibly weaker people and probably record that. "He raised a proper family So he could tie them to a bed" - to me it's like this: the guy has a house and a family, so he has beds. He ties the victim to one of the beds in his house, while there's no one except him... "Are you happy now?" Your sordid home is running red" - here probably the victim ironicly says that his blood is covering the floor of the guy's house. Victim knows probably that he's finished, but he at least he want's to annoy the killer or just die with smile on his face. Pills and chloroform All the pages torn - well, chloroform is used to make people unconsious, right? Pills probably are used in same way here - to allow the killer do whatever he wants with victim (e.g. tie to a bed - that'd be difficult when person would be consious). And the pages torn? People tear books when they're mad, angry or they have something in thier phychic. That might be a symbol of a mad person... |

Nope, this song isn't on kill bill. True, those bands are awesome. Try out Porcupine Tree, they are also a VERY intelligent band. But there are so many good bands we even don't know about...:) And this song... well, I'm new to Portishead, but I guess it's just about love. "We're lucky to live in a world where is so much music" said J. Frusciante. I agree. |

I think the meaning is similar to the "Evey home is wired". It is about people who spend too much surfing on the internet, chatting in chatrooms more than meeting real friends. "Don't use your gender " - this must speak of the chatrooms, where you really can't be sure what's the gender of the person you're speaking too, and where you cannot "use" the attributes of genders. "The millions pain me It's easier to talk to my PC" - one more example. Guy doesn't like people, probably he is too scared of real life, so he just chats via internet. |

| In one interview Steven Wilson said that it annoys him, that so much commercial (and weak) music is much more popular than the ambitious music (because of promoting singles etc.). He said that it's really bad, that because of the commerce people don't even get a chance of knowing the less promoted music, the one that isn't part of the mainstream. I think that song signifies that. | |
