Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics 19 years ago
It's obvious this song is about someone dying whom the person who wrote the song loves very much. However, this experience leads this person to have some prfound revelations. For example, love is watching someone die- I think this means unconditional love; you're no worrying about how much their death is going to hurt you, but rather that they need you at this time. Also, that every plan is a prayer to father time- that's so true. A plan means you are going to try to make something happen, but really it all depends on time. Sarah must have had a prfound impact on him to make him realise all of these things.

So who's going to watch you die? I'd like to think there would be someone.

Youth Group – Why Don't The Buildings Cry? Lyrics 19 years ago
Wow, I can't believe I'm the first to comment on this song...I've always wanted to say that. This is my new favourite song on Skeleton Jar because the melody and lyrics are so beautiful and complement one another so well. Youth Group know how to make music :) I think this song is about someone who is going through not just a hard time, but a tragedy- they're suffering a broken heart- I think because someone has died. This person can't understand why the rest of the world isn't feeling this way, isn't suffering from this heart-wrenching grief- hence 'why don't the bulidings cry'. It could also be interpreted as someone's loathing for the city, the consumerism and life of excess it represents, and the self-centred, indifferent people that live there. This person believes there are many things that are more important than serving one's needs to the point of destroying everything else. When put together, this person is feeling hurt and betrayed by an indifferent city who do not care about his or her suffering.

Death Cab for Cutie – A Movie Script Ending Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's about a guy who is driving along a highway one day and he starts having flashbacks- that sounds corny, I know, but he's daydreaming about his past. He's thinking about when he returned to his hometown, it was the same, just differet people. He then describes the different experiences he's had in that town; people waiting for the end of the work day, a girl he used to love that he no longer felt the same about. He tries to forget these memories (I'll put them to bed, but they won't sleep etc) but he can't. As he's driving along the highway and he's remembering these things, he suddenly comes back to consciousness and is surprised to discover he's driving along the highway- he thought the memories were real because they were so vivid. The onset of a later stage- he's realised he's grown up now, and he has to move on. It's impossible to forget these memories, he just has to live with them. And keep driving.

My Chemical Romance – To The End Lyrics 20 years ago
I think I've figured out something else (continuing my post from It's Not a Fashion Statement etc). I think the guy in this song is a guest at the wedding of the girl he loves, and he realises how unhappy this guy is going to make her because he's gay. Maybe he ends up killing her? I don't know. Or maybe the husband kills her when we find out in Cemetary Drive she was already married and they had an affair? A few grey areas. Perhaps he goes to prison because he's accused of his this girl's murder? Anyway, in I'm Not Okay, I think he's blaming her for giving up and for the things that she did wrong that led to the breakdown of the relationship. Then in The Ghost Of You, he's starting to miss her and realise she's never coming back. But then in the Jetset Life he's talking again about her comitting suicide again, but maybe it's because that's where he kills himself so he can make the deal with the devil? Oh, it's all making sense now! Interlude, he's askin that the woman he loved is protected until he can bring her back to life, I think this is when he is in hell- it's really sinister and eerie. Then, in Thankyou For The Venom, it's like thankyou for giving me the fuel I need to carry out my mission (killing 1,000 evil men) and he's never going to change who he is- there are religious references in that song, and he's saying I'm on the devil's side. Then in Hang 'Em High, he's on his killing spree- he's not going back. Shotgun sinners, wild eyed jokers? The evil men he has to kill. It's amazing how much sense all this makes when you just take the time to think about it. He gets this huge adrenaline rush from it. Then, he's talking to all his enemies and the girl he loves- no one does this to me, you will all have to pay. I think he's brought her back to life now and for all the people that were against him, that killed him (I think the idea that he was murdered makes more sense.) Then Cemetary Drive, remebering their affair, she was caught and murdered by her husband, he had to go way down to bring her back, he's done that. Or maybe he murdered her because it was hard seeing her with her husband and that was what made it hard? i think that's it. Anyway, in the last song, it's confusing because he's talking about how they'll dance along to the sound of her death? Maybe he's saying they'll get over it, it was a bad idea brining her back? Maybe she went back to her husband? Anyway, they both end up dying in the ned. Maybe the husband kills her. Sad, because so much happened but it amounted to nothing. Brilliant album though.

My Chemical Romance – It's Not A Fashion Statement, It's A Fucking Deathwish Lyrics 20 years ago
No one has really attempted to prvoide an explanation for the concept or story of "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" so I guess I'll have to try. I think we all agree that it is about the girl the guy in the story loves being killed and in order to get her back he has to kill 1,000 men because it says that in the booklet. But no-one has really explained how each song fits into the story. Helena is about Gerard's grandmother, but in the story I think it's Gerard reminiscing about this girl whom he loved but she destroyed everyone's lives around her. She died and he has to let her go. Then Give 'Em Hell Kid I heard was about abortion, but I think it could also be about how the man met the woman, and they fell in love, but he left her. The one thing I am most confused about is when the woman actually dies because there are references made to this in many songs on the album, all at different times so the chronology is extremely confusing. For example, it's talked about in To The End, Ghost of You, The Jetset Life is Gonna Kill You, Cemetary Drive and I Never Told You What I Do For A Living. I guess perhaps they got married after Give 'Em Hell Kid but she dies in To The End. Maybe he killed her and that's why he went to prison? I don't know, it's really confusing because so many different things seem to be going on. Anyway, this song I think is after the guy has died- I don't know when this happens exactly; perhaps in Hang 'Em High; anyway, they had a hard relationship but he still loves her and he's also talking to his enemies: you've killed me but I'm coming back and you're going to pay. You'll never keep me down kind of thing. I think the last three songs fit together and follow the story the most successfully of all the songs on the album. It would be interesting to see if someone has the answers.

Green Day – Letterbomb Lyrics 20 years ago
I love this song because to me it's one of the only punk-roots song on the album (St. Jimmy is the other.) It's classic Green Day. This song definitely ties up many of the unanswered questions such as are Jesus of Suburbia and St Jimmy two separate people or are they the same? This song tells us they are the same. It also demonstrates the breakdown of St Jimmy's followers in particular Whatshername. She starts to realsie he's not a punk-god whose going to change the wordl- he's a disenchanted messed up kid who is just really depressed. She sees through his glamour to the broken guy he is and she realises she doesn't really know him anymore and can't stay in this complete disaster of a place. Everything has fallen apart and she has to get out. It is the turning point in the album- previously, we were wowed by St Jimmy and Whatshername, the perfect punk couple, kinda like Bonnie and Clide without being murderers, but now we see St Jimmy for who he really is. And it's sad. It makes Homecoming seem like the only solution. I love this song.

Blink-182 – Stay Together for the Kids Lyrics 20 years ago
Yeah, I don't think the people in the song have actually divoreced, hence the name 'stay together for the kids,' but it's definitely about a screwed up family on the brink of divorce. And even though divorce is so common these days, it doesn't make it any easier for the kids involved. When the two people they trust the most in the world hurt them beyond belief, betray their trust. How can you have hope, when you can't even rely on your family? Your parents are supposed to be the people who guide you and support you a united force that you can fall back on. What if they hate each other so much they don't even talk to each other? What if they have completely different opinions and you have to keep both happy? What if every fucking thing that goes wtong is your fucking fault because they can't get over their anger for one another? What if the divorce has killed you inside because the two people you thought you could trust completely tore your world apart? You don't realise until you're older how much it fucks you up. How depressed and insecure you become. How there's this black whole that consumes you with unbearable pain. So to me, that's what going through a divorce is. That's what the kid in this song is going through. Okay, maybe it's not as bad as a parent abusing a kid. But it makes life a hell of a hard time nontheless. Parents are the worst things ever invented.

Blink-182 – Adam's Song Lyrics 20 years ago
A kid who is depressed and is contemplating committing suicide- which teenager hasn't done that before? There wouldn't be many. So I think this song is really beautiful and poignant in expressing this disconsolate depression. Lots of people, including myself, like this song. I don't think Blink 182 are sellouts; if they were, they wouldn't have broken up, they would have kept doing it for the money. I think they made music because they loved it and it meant something to them. What is wrong with liking a band that is popular? But as standards go today, you're only cool if you listen to an artist only 5 other people know. This really pisses me off. Get a life everyone; noone cares if your taste in music is obscure. Listen to what you like and be proud of your taste in music.

This song must have something going for it if it's been sparking debates as fiery as these for a year and a half- most other songs don't even have a tenth of this amount of comments. So i say go Green Day- you've made people listen, even if they haven't wanted to. I personally have wanted to. I think they play a damn good tune.

Green Day – Homecoming Lyrics 20 years ago
I think there have already been too many long-winded explanations of this song, which are great, but I can't be bothered to read through them all. So I'm just going to talk about a couple of things that occurred to me that I don't think have been mentioned.
When St Jimmy says 'We're f***** up and we're not the same', I think he's talking to the crowd of pain, telling them they're not the same as the rest of America- I think it's going back to when he first appeared in the story. It's like a mini biography of St Jimmy's life, recounting what led him to commit 'suicide.' (I agree with the theory that JOS and St Jimmy are the same person). Now the line'this lifelike dream ain't for me'- I think that has significance. I think it means that has happened to him is like a dream, but now he wants out because it's too painful, he's had enough. I'm not sure though.
Anyway, for the record, I went to the Green Day concert in Sydney, and they played Homecoming, and it is Mike singing 'Nobody Likes You.' At first I thought it was Billie Joe, but the more you listen to their music, the more you hear the differences in their voices. Anyway, Nobody Likes You is JOS starting to realise he's nothing without St. Jimmy- this is the beginning of him giving up, of realising how futile this whole journey has been. He's achieved nothing; he's back where he started. I think RnR GF, is extremely significant to this song- it is Tre life story, but it also fits into the JOS/St Jimmy story. Everything JOS has worked for hasn't happened- this 'Tunny' character is telling him he's living it up despite the fact that St Jimmy warned him against that meaningless lifestyle. Tunny tells St Jimmy to 'get off of his case' but JOS has given up anyway, and this is the last straw. He can't continue. So he returns home, where the underbelly is being replaced by a new generation of punks- I don't think anyone has picked up on this, but it's really important. It causes JOS to remember everything that's happened, and he's laughing at them because he knows how they feel. They think they'll change the world, but they're not doing anything. So this leads to a bittersweet kind of contentment. He's back where he started, he hasn't achieved anything, and he's given in, but at least he's realised his place. He knows he'll never change the world, and he comes to accept this. And as much as he hated it in the beginning, he's glad to be back home now. The pasrt about sending his love a letterbomb, it was whatsername who wrote Letterbomb, so I think he's saying he's going to send one in return, because he's over her leaving him. And visit him in hell- he's given up and stopped trying to be good so he knows he's going to hell.
The the final 'Nobody likes you, everyone left you...' that's where he gives up his last bit of hope-it's really over now. All fo his disciples left him because he stopped believing and is no longer exciting. Reinforces the idea that in the end, he achieved nothing.

Green Day – Desensitized Lyrics 20 years ago
Everything we hear on the news these days is bad- they don't report the good stories because there are none, but if there were, we are so conditioned to hearing the bad ones we wouldn't want to hear them anyway. Because all we hear is bad news, eventually we become desensitised to it. He's lost all sense of goodness, all he wants is 'blood and pain.' He's absorbing all of this bad stuff too, so he wants to be part of it, he wants to imitate it. And he doesn't care that it's bad, because he knows he's going to be spending his life in hell anyway.

Green Day – Deadbeat Holiday Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this song is talking about someone who's completely ruined their life, but they can't give up just yet. Even though everyone hates him, and he pretty much destroys everything he touches, the fact that he's still alive means he has something to live for. I think the fact that 'hokiday' is in the title is ironic- his life is a complete disaster, but it's being called a holiday.

Green Day – Extraordinary Girl Lyrics 20 years ago
Obviously, the he is St Jimmy, and it's stated that the girl is Whatsername- how great is this song being in thr third person? I love how it tells a story. I absolutely love this song.
I think the core of it is that slowly St Jimmy is robbing Whatsername of herself, like not letting her be who she truly is. At first she loved him, but she's finding out more about him and now she just wants to escape becuase she's miserable.
She had a vision about how she wanted to change the world, about how she wanted to be someone, but he's taken all of that away from her.
Maybe he sees what he's doing to her and he wants to kill himself for it, but I think he's just a very depressed person and is dragging her down with him.
Sad song. But I love it. I love the character of Whatsername.

Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this is a song meanings site for a reason...oh right, to discuss the MENAINGS of the SONGS. Not political opinions, becuase they have nothing to do with the song. The only political opinion that is relevant here is Billie Joe's, seeing as he wrote the song. Stop arguing and exchanging insults you're acting like 5-year olds. No, actually you're acting like George Bush- you're being idiots.
This song is about Billie Joe being disillusioned with the political situation in America, with the decisions George Bush has made and with the way he is running the country.
He is not satisfied with being force fed propaganda and doesn't want to have to live the life of a red-neck. He thinks there is more to life than being a red-neck who believes America is the super-power, while the majority of the country is not living the American dream, and many are living below the poverty line.
But as long as Geroge W. Bush is happy and getting his way, then the world is ok. Well, no, Billie Joe says. It's time to take a stand. He will not be dictated to in this way. Without the vote of the people, the government would not be there in the first place, so they need to stop acting like a dictatorship. They need to start caring about the people.

This song is definitely about a drug trip. How can you possibly sleep when you're on speed? Enough said.
How mad is this song live? I went to the Sydney show, and Billie Joe did the boo/yeah thing where he plays a chord and tells the crowd what to do. That was cool. Then when he played the opening chords of this song, it was awesome, the crowd went crazy. The 'on my own, here we go' part was so cool, it felt like everyone in the crowd was singing along. It's times like that that make you realise Green Day really is the best band in the world.

Green Day – Castaway Lyrics 20 years ago
I love the way he says mind too lol. Billie Joe is sooo sexy especially in concert. But enough of that. Yeah, I think this song is about how he's a loner and going along with it. But I think he's also taking a look at his past, and it's a journey only he can make because he's the only one that's lived it. So much has happened and his feelings are inc omplete turmoil, so he has to work them out. He's reliving everything that's happened, and he's okay with working it out on his own. He's also okay with the fact that he's a loner, that he's always been different.

But hey, when the whole world is at your feet, I don;t think it matters who the hell you are or what you do. Green Day are seriously the best band ever, from 1039/Smoothed Out/ Slappy Hours to American Idiot. Despite what people say, I think they've always been true to themselves and have done whatever feels right to them at the time.

Kisschasy – Do Do's and Whoa-oh's Lyrics 20 years ago
Kisschasy are the best thing since iPods. They are going to take over the world sometime in the next ten years- so watch out for them. This song is poking fun at meaningless pop music that is produced with the intention of targeting the consumer-driven majority. This song is challenging the perception and opinion about pop music. Most people think pop music is the lowest form of expression, but artists like Kisschasy, Ben Lee and Missy Higgins have proved this theory wrong. Pop can be beautiful and meaningful; songs don't have to have heavy guitars or screaming to convey emotions.

Kisschasy – Ione Skye Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is self- explanatory, as I said about the last Kisschasy song I posted a comment about, but anyway. I think it's about someone who is so obsessed with their image they are shallow and less of a person for it. They are so obsessed with how they look they are tiresome and boring to be around. The guy who likes this girl is so fed up with this petty preoccupation he ends up saying no one likes you anyway, enjoy being beautiful because it does't mean anything.

Kisschasy – Black Dress Lyrics 20 years ago
The first time I heard this song I was in a car at night time, so the atmosphere was perfect for this song. Thus it struck a chord with me- the song is beautiful and melancholy, and the lyrics are morbid but also have a pure quality about them. I think it's about losing someone and not being able to let go, although this is pretty self explanatory. I just wanted to comment on how much I love this song. It means so much more though because the lover can't come to terms with the fact his loved one is gone, and is in serious denial. It is so beautiful because he is so naive- believes that she's not really gone and if he digs her up he can have her forever; if he can just make her eat or clean her, then it's as if she never left. It's so sad it makes me want to cry.

Yeah, go Australia! It needs a bit of defending against the onslaught of American culture. No offence Americans, love your work, you gave me Green Day, but gotta have some Aussie pride. Because the lyrics aren't in the Nimrod booklet I had no idea what Billie Joe was singing first time I heard this but now I think it's a great song. I always loved the tune but the lyrics are great too. I love the chorus. And gotta love the title- to set the record straight, platypuses belong to a rare gropu of marsupials called the monotremes. There are only two known monotremes in the world, the platypus and the echidna. Monotremes lay eggs despite having pouches like marsupials (mammals with pouches.) So there's the 411 on unique Australian animals.

Coldplay – Clocks Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this song is about someone who let their loved one go, or lost the opportunity to tell him or her how how he or she feels. This then results in endless 'what ifs?' replaying over and over until he almost goes crazy- 'lights go out and I can't be saved'. everything in the first verse makes no sense because once he or she has lost the one they love, nothing makes sense. Then the second verse is about remembering the way they were, but there were misunderstandings between them. Then at the end he or she just wants the pain to be over.

Fuel – Shimmer Lyrics 20 years ago
I believe this song is about a guy who is in love with a girl. She pretends to be in love with him, but is in fact just using him; she knows that he cannot refuse her because he loves her so much. They broke up, but she soon calls on him again, knowing he is unstable and as aforementioned cannot refuse her. He doesn't really know who she is- she's never revealed her true self to him, a form of manipulation. He knows she'll justr hurt him again, but doesn't want to let her go, so suggests being friends, but he doesn't know if he can easily forget and let go of everything that has happened. The chorus is about how he's never really had her, and has never really knows her. She is too unpredictable and he can never be sure of anything with her. The second verse is about how she is glamourous- she drew him in with her fanciful ideas and dreams, they seemed wonderful to him. But then we see the true side of her- she hurts him, by denying him his feelings. He wasn't able to see who she truly was though, until after she had revealed her true self. He didn't want to throw himself in completely, as she was so elusive, and wanted to prove he wasn't weak, but he still suffered. He just can't keep her, she's too much for him. He can't keep up with her mind games. But he is frustrated- he loves her, but she just destroys him. So, as those defeated last words indicate, he just has to give up.

Whoever said that this song was about Billie Joe's dad cross-dressing was clearly wrong. It is about Billie Joe! About how he feels the need to cross dress I think as a result of how harsh his dad is- he would want Billie Joe to be a 'macho man'. Billie Joe probably feels slightly ashamed and knowshis dad doesn't approve, but he can't stop himslef. Or maybe I'm taking it too seriously? i think this is an example of a song with great meaning- it wasnt just a people pleaser song, they wrote it for a reason. all you in disdain of hip hop/rnb will know what i amtalking about. i think, even though it has all ready been mentioned, that this song is about the replacement of radio personalities with television personalities. it was new, entertaining and you could actually see the people. i personally would prefer a radio show, but i am not the majority. i think an interesting line is 'if i was young it didn't stop you coming through' i think this would be in relation to television ratings- although, did they have ratings back then? just a thought. i don'tget the we can't rewind we've gone too far- does that mean in the car, you would listen to radio but it's not as favoured, therefore they can never go back to the way they were? with radio, i mean.

Green Day – Jesus of Suburbia Lyrics 20 years ago
i think this song is about a guy who lives in suburbia, is almost typical except he knows that he deserves more, but knows he\'ll never get it so is bitter. he also comes from a home where his father abused him and his mother loved him but did nothing about the abuse. so he lives in the world, knows he\'ll never achieve anything so becomes apathetic, turning to drugs and alcohol. he realises the place where he lives is the end of the earth- it\'s a nothing place. then he becomes angry- he doesn\'t deserve this discrimination. he then becomes angry- at his parents and upbringing, the town and america. then he starts to wonder if he is making everything up. is it worth it all this anger? is it unfounded? then, he decides he is sick of that place and runs away-\'to the lights of masochists\', to drugs and sex, everything that promises to fill the void but leaves you empty. at the end of the song, i think st jimmy makes his first appearance-\'i don\'t feel any shame i won\'t apologise...running away from pain when you\'ve been victimised-sounds like st jimmy to me.

hhhmmm maybe by the time i post this no one will read it but about the nice guys i dont think its in relation to girls i think its about people who are two faced-look at the second verse. greenday are not referring to themselves as nice guys in case anyone thought that-they are dissing them. i dont gte the pressure cooker bit though? maybe 'nice guys' are the ones who become psychologists and hes tellin them he doesnt need them?

Green Day – St. Jimmy Lyrics 20 years ago
i dunno if its been said but i cant be bothered readin through all the comments if you listen to letterbomb, it says 'you're not the jesus of suburbia/the saint jimmy is a figment of/your father's rage and your mother's love' supporting the theory and suggesting that jeus and jimmy are the same person. i think st jimmy rocks-but the world wasnt enough for him i wish i could join his lost and found...lol

Green Day – When I Come Around Lyrics 20 years ago
i think this song is about a guy with a girlfriend who has been cheating on her and abusing her. but when she confornts him about it hes like yeh, well you've been thinking about ditchin me so ur not innocent, it didnt mean that much to u either. n i think the chorus means she could find someone better but shes been with him for so long its become normal. go bass! i agree with mr bojangles (?love the name) life would not be worth living without green day
