I think this song likely originated from her loneliness from being on the road not only for touring, but for publicity. I think her reference to "god would they vomit and run" is a bit of a hyperbole, exagerating how she thinks people would react towards what she views as a pathetic evening. |

"Do what? Rhyme?" Regarding the point of view/porn of view thing. Its more than just rhyming. Im sure there is some big important word that fits the definition that I am also unable to properly illustrate through words. There is some assonance and alliteration going on here, it makes you think you are hearing the same phrase twice if you arent paying attention. its not like someone is in awe that britney rhymed "I still believe" with "Still Believe!" they know what they are talking about, even if they cant get it out (like Im not doing here). But you know, be all elitest and snobby if it makes you feel better. |

Clearly back-alley abortions are not a part of a culture at this time. They are remembered from when abortion was illegal. With the recent attempts at making abortion illegal again, this song makes some valid points. "put away that hanger honey you have many other options how about a nine-month long vacation and a two-foot coffin" The reference to other options is other options to abortion. The nine-month vacation would be when the typical family would ship their dearest daughter off to "aunt and uncles" while she waited for the birth. This actually happened to my mother-in-law. My husband didnt find out until he and I were considering options to an unexpected pregnancy. The two foot coffin is in reference to another outcome of unwanted pregnancies. Given no other options but to go through with the pregnancy, the children or often subjected to abuse and death. The average infant is 17-22 inches long at birth. Approximately 2 feet. |

When I saw them in Seattle, Amanda said "we werent going to play this but..." Im not sure if she meant just in Seattle (what with the strokes of woe and dispair that many seem to paint us with) or on the tour as a whole. At any rate, shes said "its not about what you think" with the obvious assumption being self mutilation. I have no idea what its really about, but I've often wondered if its about what/how she feels when she's writing. It likely often brings up sadness and anger, something like tearing open old scars. "and sappy songs about sex and cheating bland accounts of two lovers meeting" Maybe she hates that kind of stuff, thinks its old and worthless. |

"her veins are all showing" If you havent hit at least your mid twenties you probably havent notices how those veins tend to rise up. Im pretty sure its about how the "little girl" is aging, not about drug use. "Late April day" when she's at the top of the slide. Spring is a metaphor for youth or being youthful or young" the "orange old man at the bottom" could easily be autumn. "Past getting Brighter" When you're in your teens there isnt much of a past. There's your childhood, but when you're a teen you are more of an adult and doing more adult things. When adults look back on their history much of their late teens are included in their adult memories. Maybe the reference is that the past seems much brighter than it might of when you were in it. /end blather. |

Im pretty sure she wasnt a child of rape. She's in her late twenties and I think the morning after pill wasnt around back then. Amanda and Brian are very receptive of their fans and their artwork. The encouragement they give their fans is amazing. The drawings and creations posted on their site arent necessarily because they agree with what their fans interpreted, but because they seem to appreciate the work that people put into their own art and respect their what they see and create. |

the part right after "just the way we showed you" "Posture! Posture" maybe "poke him or something and see if he's moving okay?" "I think we've lost him!" I wonder how much of this is about trying to move up, maybe her opinion about doing so for some careers. The blow job reference. The bit about right foot, left foot. It always reminds me of a little beauty pagent princess who's grown up and still trying to live under that enormous pressure. Im generally way off base with these things though. |

" i'd like to do more than survive, I WANT TO RUB IT IN YOUR FACE!" I know plenty who've felt that way after a break up. What a great line. |

About the Orange Man bit. Amanda has done a couple of interviews where they will ask her about particular lyrics and she brings up an interesting opnion. - When someone writs a screenplay or a book, or plays a part, nobody assumes that the ideas came form something that happened to them or that they play the part because they relate, its just a part they play or write. But when somebody who seems deep writes a song everybody assumes the lyrics are personal. About the Pony bit. A "one trick pony" is someone or something that does something very well, but that something is all they can do. This song almost sounds like its about a first love. At least thats the only time I can recall when I loved so powerfully. Everything since has been a comparible watercolor. For whatever reason he doesnt reciprocate her love in the same way. Only in red which, as has been mentioned, would likely represent lust. at any rate: "and i loved the way you acted but your one trick pony's dead " Whatever she used to love about him is getting a bit old. |
