U2 – Yahweh Lyrics 20 years ago
i think its a great way to finish off the HTDAAB cd, much like "grace" was on all that you can't leave behind. its not very subtle compared to other U2 songs written because it does speak clearly of Bono's desires to be used by God for the greater good. i think he tries to explain how pain, sacrifice and suffering go hand in hand with redemption and salvation (not just on a religious level, but on a more practical level - think about his humanitarian work etc). i get the feeling that whether or not u agree is besides the point to Bono - this is more of a personal chit chat between him and his God, a plea to be constantly broken into someone new, someone who influences others for good through his deeds and actions.

U2 – I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For Lyrics 20 years ago
hahaahhaha!

it's the experience of the journey taken that ultimately determines its success. and i do agree that Bono is charting his spiritual and philosophical approach to life, from his new wave/punk days to his pentecostal involvement to finally a less sectarian, more open-minded approach to God, love and various other deeper themes. i think he's approaching an understanding of spiritual themes covered in the Bible and in theology but, like most mere mortals, is unable to grasp (or put into practice) the true significance behind such philosophy - concepts of grace and love, with which he writes alot of songs about.

U2 – Grace Lyrics 20 years ago
wernerkoek makes a great point actually. Bono purposely constructs and uses imagery of a woman (much like in Proverbs when wisdom is described as a woman) to convey an accessible (well, to some anyhow) image of what "grace" looks like. true, it's not everyone's cup of tea but generally in a pseudo-Christian world it's increasingly hard to fathom what practical grace would look like. I think the usage of feminine qualities in the construction of so-called "Christian" themes throughout U2's songwriting features heavily (think "mysterious ways" etc), and it's worth a shot reinterpreting many of their supposed simple love songs as having a deeper connotation? again Bono really is obsessed with the idea of grace and u will find that it influences his songwriting as far back as the "Boy" cd.

and i actually HAVE heard of the raped woman theory, and it would make some sense in this context, though i'd say that it fits well in the overall picture of what Bono is trying to say "grace" as a thematic concept should be like. a rather fitting illustration to underline the song's emphasis on grace.

U2 – 40 Lyrics 20 years ago
glad to see that U2 are using this song to finish their live concerts these days. its an intimate number, more appropriately suited to the end of an emotionally charged night rather than sandwiched in between other great U2 songs. despite what's been said about religious/non-religious connotations "40" works simply because it tugs at the emotional heartstrings - it's U2 at their rawest, most open either with each other or in front of 40 000 fans, singing "how long to sing this song?" as a plaintive cry that could cover a wide range of issues and topics. it's sort of their answer (question?) to the question of pain and suffering in this world - rather than offering a simple straighforward answer, they throw a rhetoric question back at their whoever's listening and leaves the listener to draw their own conclusions.

Bono at his rawest and finest.

Delirious? – White Ribbon Day Lyrics 20 years ago
its the closest song delirious? have come to actually touching on political issues ala. Bono and U2.. which i know is a rather unfair comparison despite the fact that this has been made numerous times... still it has Martin's trademark lyrical edge to it and is pretty solid musically.

David Crowder Band – Stars Lyrics 20 years ago
this is a beautiful song that has a rather poignant chorus.. when i first heard it i was slightly bemused by the verses (sun moon stars etc) but the moment Dave breaks out into "and how could such a thing shine its light on me..." i immediately thought of the Cross and of its apparent ugliness, within which is contained the profound ability to transform and unify humanity to God, through the power of what Jesus did.

that was a revelation moment for me.
