We all do something which is very natural to us. One day we wake up and find that we cant do it anymore. We have lost it.
This is what I guess Simon means when "When I come back to bed, Someone's taken my place".
If you have been in that state, you know how hard it feels. And the JOY of getting it back is incomparable. And hence the "fall on the floor and I laughing".
